When planning my Rome itinerary, I was pleasantly surprised by how user-friendly the official ticketing website is.

You can book directly through the official site, and doing so in advance is absolutely essential if you want to secure a spot.

Once you access the portal and click on "INDIVIDUALS," you will be greeted by a massive list of ticket choices. It can be a bit overwhelming at first glance.

Generally, you will choose from 5 main ticket categories.

The first two options are the standard 24-hour passes priced at €18 (around $20 USD).

The other three options are premium tiers that include access to either the Underground area, the Arena Floor, or the Upper tiers.

Crucially, all 5 ticket options include entry to both the Colosseum and the Roman Forum / Palatine Hill ruins.

Here is how the system works:

You must select a specific, timed entry slot for the Colosseum. However, you can enter the Roman Forum anytime within your ticket's validity period.

Most standard tickets open for booking exactly 30 days in advance. Note that slots do not open all at once; they release progressively based on local Rome time.

This means if you want a 11:00 AM entry ticket, that specific slot will only become available exactly 30 days prior at 11:00 AM Rome time.

I opted for the FULL EXPERIENCE TICKET WITH ENTRY TO THE ARENA OF THE COLOSSEUM.

This allowed me to step onto the actual reconstruction of the arena floor, which I'll detail below.

If your heart is set on touring the Underground (hypogeum) area, I highly recommend being on the site the exact minute they open 30 days prior. I was a bit too laid-back and missed out, which is why I ended up booking the Arena Floor ticket instead!

2. Entering the Colosseum

Even if you have a timed ticket, expect to wait in a decent line.

I recommend arriving slightly ahead of your scheduled time, and make sure you have your physical passport with you.

The staff checks matching names on tickets and IDs at the gate, which makes the queue move a bit slowly. The process feels slightly inefficient, but security is tight.

After clearing security, you will follow the signs up the stairs where you'll find the iconic, massive wooden cross overlooking the interior.

In the photo above, you can see the semi-circular platform filled with visitors—that is the reconstructed Arena Floor.

To access that specific area, you have to go through an extra checkpoint where staff will scan your premium ticket once more.

Before heading down, we paused at a vantage point offering a stunning view of the Arch of Constantine and the Roman Forum to listen to more historical commentary.

Then, we made our way down to peer into the exposed underground chambers (the hypogeum). This is where gladiators and wild animals were kept before matches.

If you don't go down to the underground level, the view from the edge of the arena is still fantastic and gives you a very clear look at the structural layout.

3. Is the Colosseum Arena Ticket Worth It?

To be completely honest, the view of the underground ruins from the Arena Floor isn't drastically different from what you see from the standard upper walkways.

However, standing right in the center of the amphitheater does give you a much wider, 360-degree perspective of the seating tiers, which makes for incredible, sweeping photos.

That said, I wouldn't classify the Arena Floor ticket as an absolute "must-do" upgrade.

Unless you have a deep desire to stand exactly where the gladiators fought, the standard 24-hour ticket (€18 / ~$20 USD) is more than enough for an incredible experience.
