Colosseum Rome Tickets 2026: Booking Underground & Attic Tours

If you've decided to embark on a trip to Rome, the very first thing you need to do is

book your Colosseum tickets!

It's not just about a standard entrance ticket; there are different tickets depending on which areas you want to explore,

such as the Arena, Underground, and Attic levels.

These tickets are incredibly popular and often sell out as soon as they become available!

From opening times and how to book on the official website,

to a review of the Underground tour, I'll cover everything in detail!

Opening Times

Colosseum tickets go on sale 30 days before your desired visit date.

Both standard admission tickets and the highly sought-after Underground and Attic tickets

can be booked starting 30 days in advance of your visit.

Underground tickets become available at 8:45 AM Rome local time,

and Attic tickets at 8:50 AM Rome local time.

For those in Korea, this translates to 4:45 PM / 4:50 PM KST.

However, during Daylight Saving Time (Summer Time), Korean time is one hour earlier,

so you'll need to aim for 3:45 PM / 3:50 PM KST!

When you visit the official Colosseum website, you'll find a wide variety of ticket types,

which can be a bit confusing.

This is the most basic Colosseum admission ticket.

It grants you access to the general viewing areas of the Colosseum, the Roman Forum,

and Palatine Hill.

If you're not interested in the Underground, Arena, or Attic levels,

this ticket is enough to experience the main Colosseum attractions.

This ticket allows you to directly explore the remaining areas beneath the Colosseum,

where gladiators and animals moved before their spectacles.

It's by far the most popular of the special access areas.

This ticket grants you access to the Attic level of the Colosseum,

offering stunning panoramic views of the Colosseum's interior and the Rome cityscape

from above – that's its biggest highlight!

How to Book on the Official Website

Once on the official website, simply select your desired ticket type.

While general admission tickets often have plenty of availability,

cancellation tickets for the Underground and Attic levels are extremely rare.

Select your visit date, entry time, and the number of people,

After entering your name and email address, and making the payment, you're all set!

When entering, they might check your ticket along with your ID,

so you must write your name exactly as it appears on your passport in English.

📌 Colosseum & Roman Forum Guided Tour

If you're not interested in the underground or attic areas,

I'd also recommend buying a general admission ticket

and booking a guided tour separately.

It's definitely more interesting to see things with explanations

than just wandering around!

Underground Cancelled Ticket Review

First off, I planned my Rome trip in a hurry just two weeks before,

so there was no way any underground tickets were left, and not a single cancellation ticket

appeared even until the day before.

So, how did I get one?

By booking a tour that includes an official guide!

On the Colosseum's official website, they sell "Educational Tours"

which bundle admission tickets with a guided tour.

This is separate from the general tickets I mentioned earlier,

and it's only available in 4 languages:

English, French, Italian, and Spanish.

The price is over ~$73 per person, but even these sell out quickly,

so you can't get them without fast booking!😂

About 4 days before my visit, a cancellation ticket opened up during the daytime,

so I quickly booked it with an English-speaking guide.

📌 Tour Including Underground Admission Ticket

If you can't even get those, but you absolutely want to go underground,

then you'll need to book a tour package that includes underground admission.

It might be expensive, but there's no other way!

Official Guided Tour Review

The official guided tour queue is different from the general admission line.

If you go a bit further inside,

you'll see a separate "Full Experience" line.

You can enter starting 30 minutes beforehand.

I had my ticket saved as a PDF file on my phone beforehand.

They check if the name matches your passport,

so make sure to bring your passport – it's essential!

After meeting our guide at the meeting point,

we received earphones and moved on.

Free viewing is still possible even after the tour ends.

The guide was in English, and while it was hard to understand everything perfectly,

the speaker wasn't too fast, so I could generally grasp what they were explaining.

Walking directly through the underground area,

where gladiators and animals waited,

and understanding how they ascended into the arena,

made the whole structure so much clearer, and it was absolutely fascinating!

Back then, beneath the arena floor, there were elevator mechanisms and

pulleys installed, and through trapdoors,

animals or people would suddenly appear – what a spectacle!

Though the ticket price was significantly higher, it was still

totally worth coming to the underground! No regrets whatsoever ✨

Next time, I plan to book a tour of the upper levels.

After the guided tour, the Colosseum's ground level

was open for free exploration, but with no shade,

the summer heat was incredibly challenging.

For anyone visiting in hot weather, an umbrella/parasol and water are absolute essentials!
