While searching for tickets to various Rome attractions, I found the Colosseum's official website to be quite user-friendly.

You can book your Colosseum tickets directly through their official site, and it's absolutely essential to do so well in advance.

That link is correct, but sometimes when embedded in a blog, it displays as "Waiting...".

Once on the official site, navigate to "INDIVIDUALS" to choose your ticket options. You'll find quite a few!

To visit the Colosseum, you'll need to select from five different ticket types.

The first two tickets, priced at ~$19 and marked "24H," are standard options.

The three options above those include access to the underground, the Arena, or the upper levels, respectively.

It's important to note that all five ticket types include entry to both the Colosseum and the Roman Forum archaeological area.

To simplify the ticket choices:

You'll select a specific time slot for the Colosseum, but you can enter the Roman Forum anytime within your ticket's validity.

Most tickets become available for booking 30 days in advance. Entry times are released sequentially, aligning with Rome's local time.

This means if you want an 11:00 AM entry ticket, it will only become available exactly 30 days before, at 11:00 AM Rome time.

*For example, 11:00 AM in Rome is 5:00 PM EST, but this can shift during Daylight Saving Time.

I opted for the FULL EXPERIENCE TICKET WITH ENTRY TO THE ARENA OF THE COLOSSEUM.

This allowed me to step onto the Arena floor, an experience I'll delve into more below.

*Note: This specific ticket often opens for booking only one week in advance, not 30 days.

If you're keen on purchasing a ticket that includes underground access, I highly recommend logging on exactly 30 days prior, the moment tickets are released. I wasn't quick enough and missed out, which is why I ended up with the Arena ticket!

2. Entering the Colosseum

Even if you arrive at your designated entry time, expect to wait in line for a bit. It's always a good idea to arrive a little early, and don't forget to bring your passport!

The entry process can be a bit slow due to ticket and ID checks, making it feel less efficient than it could be.

After a security check, you'll follow the signs up the stairs to enter, where you'll first encounter a massive cross. I paused there for a while, diligently listening to my audio guide.

For the Colosseum, I found an audio guide incredibly helpful for understanding the history. I also did a separate night tour of Rome.

Honestly, I highly recommend doing some kind of tour – whether it's a morning city tour or a night tour – in Rome. This city is brimming with ancient ruins, and having explanations truly enhances the experience.

The semi-circular area with people in the photo is the Arena.

To enter there, you'll need to have your ticket checked again, as it has a separate entrance.

Then, heading towards the Arena, I got as close as possible to the underground area. I took photos from directly opposite the Arena, but this spot is quite narrow and gets very crowded. Haha.

If you don't go down into the underground, you can see roughly what's in the right photo, and honestly, it's not significantly different from the view you get from the Arena.

3. Colosseum Arena Access: Recommended or Not?

The view of the underground from the Arena isn't dramatically different from what you see from the opposite side.

Of course, you have a much wider area to stand on, and you're deeper inside the Colosseum's stage area, which allows for a broader backdrop in your photos.

However, I wouldn't say Arena access is an absolute must-do.

So, unless you have a specific desire to see the underground area, like I did, I'd recommend booking the most common ticket (the ~$19 one) that includes 24-hour access to the Roman Forum.
