Clarks Shiraz Agra Review: Taj Mahal Sunrise Basecamp
Get the real scoop on Clarks Shiraz Agra. Is this local Indian 5-star hotel worth it for your early morning Taj Mahal sunrise run? Read our review.

Clarks Shiraz, Agra
Before heading out to witness the breathtaking Taj Mahal at sunrise, I needed a comfortable place to crash for the night. I ended up staying at the Clarks Shiraz in Agra. I didn't actually book this hotel directly; instead, it was part of a multi-day tour package I joined (specifically, this one: Delhi to Agra Fort & Jaipur Tour). When booking the tour, you can choose your accommodation level from 3-star to 5-star. I opted for the 4-star tier, but to my surprise, they upgraded me to a 5-star property! However, it's a 'local' 5-star hotel, which comes with its own unique charm and caveats. Let’s dive into the details.

1. Clarks Shiraz Agra Overview

The lobby is massive and has that distinct, grand weight of a classic heritage building. Built back in 1962 and renovated in 2015, it sits in that slightly retro, mid-century sweet spot. The front desk staff were welcoming and efficient. Check-in starts at 2:00 PM, and check-out is at 12:00 PM. Since I arrived late and planned an early morning 'open run' to the Taj Mahal, the hotel's location was an absolute lifesaver. Because it's so close to the monument, I didn't have to check out before heading out at dawn. I was able to see the Taj Mahal, come back to the hotel for a relaxed breakfast, and pack up without any rush.

2. The Reality of a Local 5-Star Indian Hotel
If you've traveled around India, you probably know that global 5-star chains (like the Marriott or Oberoi) live up to international luxury standards. However, 'local' 5-star hotels are a different story. It's best not to expect modern ultra-luxury, but rather a solid, clean, and comfortable mid-range experience.

My room—likely a Superior or Deluxe room booked through the tour—was perfectly clean and well-equipped, though it didn't scream '5-star luxury' in the modern sense.

It came with a simple tea and coffee setup, a basic writing desk, and a small TV.

The bathroom featured a bathtub, and the amenities provided were decent. While it might not match a global five-star brand, the room was comfortable, and most importantly, clean. Hygiene can be a major concern for travelers in India, but Clarks Shiraz passed the test with flying colors. Plus, since I only paid for a 4-star package, getting this level of comfort was a fantastic win.
3. Pool & Hotel Amenities

Being a local 5-star property, it does feature nice amenities like an outdoor swimming pool and a fitness center. Here is a shot of the pool area at night when I arrived, followed by some daytime photos after breakfast.

The outdoor grounds are surprisingly spacious and beautifully lit at night, making it a lovely spot for an evening stroll to unwind.

One thing to note is that the main entrance of the property sits a bit far back from the street. I headed out for a bit to visit a local spot at night, and if you don't feel like walking down the driveway, you can easily ask your driver or rickshaw to drop you off right at the lobby entrance.

Otherwise, it's a pleasant, short walk. This is the main gate area where you can stroll back in to help digest your dinner.
4. Buffet Breakfast Experience

As expected of a local heritage hotel, the buffet breakfast features a massive spread of authentic Indian dishes. Of course, standard continental breakfast items are available if you prefer, but I highly recommend trying the local flavors while you're in India!

Most of the other guests staying here were domestic travelers, along with a few international tourists. While my stay was bundled into a tour package, I looked up the standalone rates and found rooms starting as low as ~$32 per night. At this price point, you shouldn't expect the Ritz, but it's an incredible value if you want a clean, safe, and trustworthy base in Agra without worrying about hygiene issues.
