When planning a trip to Agra, most travelers have one major goal: witnessing the majestic Taj Mahal at sunrise. My recent visit in 2026 was no different; I arrived late in the evening, ready for an early start the next day.
Given its proximity to the Taj Mahal, Agra is brimming with restaurants catering to tourists. Navigating the options can be a bit overwhelming, but after some searching, I discovered The Salt Cafe. And honestly? It was a fantastic find!

Arriving at night, the building's exterior lighting is surprisingly vibrant, easily catching your eye from a distance. You'll know it's the place you're looking for!

Finding it with Google Maps is straightforward. I opted for an Uber Bike, which I highly recommend. It’s a convenient way to get around Agra, and I noticed they've become much more prevalent recently, making transportation a breeze.
2. Two Distinct Floors: Levels 3 & 4 with Different Atmospheres
This cafe is actually split across two distinct floors, each offering a completely different ambiance.
The third floor feels more like a traditional restaurant, perfect for families or larger groups. It even has a bar area, and the overall vibe is calm and relaxed, ideal for a quiet dinner.
The fourth floor, however, is a world away. While still a cafe, it features a DJ spinning tunes, creating a lively, almost bar-like atmosphere that's quite unique for India. It’s not quite a full-blown club, but definitely not a typical quiet restaurant either.
This floor felt more suited for couples or friends looking to enjoy the vibe rather than intense conversation. The music can be quite loud, making it more of a place to soak in the ambiance than to have a quiet chat.
If a peaceful dialogue is your priority, the third floor would be a better choice. However, when I visited late in the evening, the third floor seemed to be winding down for the night.
3. What We Ordered
Here's what I ordered. I knew I couldn't eat much, so I debated just getting one item. But when I spotted Crispy Corn on the menu, I simply couldn't pass it up!
Of course, I couldn't just have Crispy Corn for dinner, so I needed something more substantial too.
The Aglio Olio spaghetti was quite good in flavor, though I wished it had been a bit more oily. It felt a tad dry.
Crispy Corn, as always, is India's ultimate beer snack. Seriously, it's a must-try with a cold one.
I almost always order it when I'm enjoying a beer in India. Just a heads-up: sometimes places have other corn dishes, so make sure to specifically ask for the 'Crispy' Corn to get the real deal!
4. Cost Breakdown
Here’s the breakdown:
With a 10% service charge and 2.5% each for SGST and CGST (local taxes), the final bill came out to approximately ~$19.
While that might not seem super cheap for India, considering the fantastic atmosphere and quality of the food, it felt like a fair price. The Salt Cafe is also open quite late for Agra standards; Google Maps indicates it's open until midnight. I visited around 9:30 PM and left around 10:30 PM.
My early departure was due to needing to wake up bright and early for the Taj Mahal's famous 'open run' the next morning!

Oh, and it's a rooftop! I didn't realize it at first because of the way it's designed, but the ceiling is open to the sky. It doesn't quite feel like an open-air rooftop, as it's more of a retractable roof that likely closes in case of rain, offering the best of both worlds.
The 3rd floor has a calm restaurant atmosphere, suitable for families or group dinners. On the other hand, the 4th floor has a unique bar vibe with a DJ playing, and the loud music makes it better for enjoying the atmosphere rather than having quiet conversations.
With a 10% service charge and taxes added to the price of the three items, the total comes to 1,894 rupees. This is equivalent to ~$19.
