Recommended Weekend Getaway Near Seoul
Conquering Chuncheon, Gangwon-do, in a 2-Day, 1-Night Trip
If you're bored staying home on the weekend
and wondering if there's anywhere good to go,
then look no further!
How about a trip to Chuncheon, Gangwon-do,
which is just an hour away from Seoul by train?
With a huge variety of bakeries, amazing restaurants, and unique tourist attractions,
it's the perfect place to have fun and feast!
Based on my recent visit,
I'll share a fantastic 2-day, 1-night itinerary
that lets you make the most of your time!
(For those in their 30s, stamina potions are a must!)
1. Essentials

First off, before you embark on your Chuncheon adventure near Seoul,
I'll share two essential tips to help you enjoy this trip
both affordably and comfortably.
Chuncheon Pass

City tours, various exhibitions, canoeing, food,
cafe discounts, accommodation discounts, and more are all included.
Make sure to grab the Chuncheon Tour Pass, a dedicated tourism pass for Chuncheon
that includes various services.

It's available for use based on 24-hour and 48-hour durations,
and comes in Light and Integrated Pass options.
Starting from ~$12, you can use it as a budget-saving cheat code
to fit your itinerary and save on expenses.
I used the Light Pass, and the 2-day, 1-night itinerary I'll share
is perfectly covered by it.
Rental Car

While most attractions and famous spots are accessible by public transportation,
some places can be quite inconvenient to reach without a car.
That's why I opted for a train + rental car combination
for this Chuncheon trip.
Of course, if you have your own car, it's best to drive from home,
but considering fatigue and potential weekend traffic, renting is definitely more comfortable...
2. Accommodation

For accommodation, it's best to book an Airbnb, pension, or hotel in areas like Namchuncheon or Gangchon,
depending on your personal preference.
However, if you're looking for a 'pool villa' or a more 'natural' setting,
you'll need to choose accommodation located on the outskirts rather than in the city center.
This might make your sightseeing routes a bit inconvenient.

This time, I stayed at Beyaz Grotto, located near Namchuncheon Station.
It's an accommodation designed with a cave concept,
and it felt like a more artistic take on the cave hotels of Turkey, which I really loved.

3. Introducing the 2-Day, 1-Night Chuncheon Travel Itinerary
I'll introduce the short but impactful 2-day, 1-night Chuncheon travel itinerary
that I experienced.
Day 1: Yongsan Station -> Namchuncheon Station

I booked a train departing at 8:46 AM
and made my way there.
My friend boarded at Cheongnyangni.
From Yongsan, it takes 1 hour and 20 minutes;
from Cheongnyangni, it takes 1 hour.
📍 Yongsan Station (High-Speed Rail)

📍 Cheongnyangni Station (High-Speed Rail)
214, Wangsan-ro, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul
📍 Namchuncheon Station, Gyeongchun Line (ITX)
2260, Yeongseo-ro, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province
Day1. Jayu Bakery

Jayu Bakery in Chuncheon is famous for its 'An-butter' (red bean paste and butter)
that received a Blue Ribbon.
Including the downtown area, there are three branches,
and the one right by Namchuncheon Station offers superb accessibility,
making it perfect for grabbing one as breakfast or a snack.
Personally, the chive cream cheese bread is
even better than the An-butter!

📍 Jayu Bakery Namchuncheon Station Branch

Day1. Donut214

This donut shop has insane visuals that look like they'd send your blood sugar soaring, but
if you visit early in the morning, there aren't many options available,
so I recommend visiting in the afternoon.

The creams used in these donuts are genuinely delicious.
The bread is soft and not dry, so it goes down easily,
and it's not as sweet as it looks, which I absolutely love!
📍 Donut214

Day1. Yetgoeul Charcoal Dakgalbi

Charcoal Dakgalbi (Spicy Grilled Chicken)
located on the way to Jade Garden.
I went after visiting Jade Garden, but
if you're going to eat anyway, go there first!

If you visit the restaurant first, you get a 20% discount on the entrance fee,
making your trip even more budget-friendly.
For the charcoal dakgalbi, there's salt, soy sauce, and spicy seasoning.
There's also grilled pork neck, but the spicy seasoning is the absolute best ♥️!
📍 Haetgoeul Dakgalbi
30, Haetgol-gil, Namsan-myeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province
Day1. Jade Garden

I was told it was a garden where you could feel a European vibe, but
while the entrance is grand and definitely has a European feel,
since it's an Asian region after all, the plants and
landscaping atmosphere felt more like a vibrant Asian aesthetic
rather than a European one.

Nevertheless, it's a great place to escape the sun on a hot day,
enjoy a cool retreat amidst nature,
and take beautiful photos with flowers.
The entrance fee for adults is ~$8 per person,
so if you love gardens, forests, and flowers, it's a great place to visit.
Since it's a place with some hilly paths,
I recommend wearing comfortable shoes.

Day1.

Do you love activities?
If you're planning a trip near Seoul this weekend,
I really hope you try this one thing in Chuncheon.

This is a course where you explore the Chuncheon Jungdo Mullegil route
by paddling a canoe for about 40 minutes.
This is also included as a benefit in the tour pass I mentioned earlier,
so if you get the Light Pass,
you'll be really satisfied.
Day1. Animation Exhibition Hall

An exhibition that was more fun than I expected!
During my Chuncheon trip, there were so many diverse exhibitions, but I chose the Animation Museum because it was the one field I'm truly passionate about.
It was really enjoyable, offering a glimpse into the history of cartoons and plenty of interactive experiences.

The admission ticket also grants you access to the Robot Museum right next door, so I highly recommend going early!
At the Robot Museum, most of the interactive experiences end before 5 PM, so there wasn't much left to see if you arrive later.
📍 Animation Museum
854 Baksa-ro, Seo-myeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do Special Self-Governing Province
Day1. World Liquor Market

This is the perfect spot to enjoy everything from traditional Korean liquors like Soju and Makgeolli to whiskies, wines, and other global beverages.

If you're just looking for restaurants near your accommodation, that's fine, but if you want to enjoy a drink in a lovely atmosphere at your stay, you absolutely *must* visit this place.
It's more reasonable in terms of selection and price than buying from a convenience store or local supermarket.
📍 World Liquor Market
632 Sunhwandaero, Dongnae-myeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do Special Self-Governing Province (Hakgok-ri)
Day2. Osidraeyo

I haven't been to Chuncheon countless times, but after my local friend recommended this place, it's definitely secured a spot in my heart as a must-visit restaurant!
It's a gukbap (rice soup) restaurant, and what makes it truly captivating is its incredibly clear broth.
Standard: ~$6
Special: ~$8
Considering today's prices, this high-quality meal offers amazing value for money, especially since the broth, rice, and side dishes are all unlimited refills!
It's perfect for a satisfying meal, a hangover cure, or even as a delightful accompaniment to drinks.
However, be aware that there's often a significant wait from opening time, and they might close earlier than posted hours if ingredients run out, so plan accordingly!
📍 Osidraeyo
1st Floor, 25 Gongji-ro 242beon-gil, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do Special Self-Governing Province
Day2. Daewondang

If Daejeon has Sungsimdang, then Chuncheon proudly boasts Daewondang!
Its spacious interior is so expansive, you could easily mistake it for a large cafe.
The Mammoth Bread and Cream Sandwich Bread are particularly famous, but with a wide array of classic offerings like fresh cream cakes, sandwiches, and croquettes, it's a place everyone, young and old, can find something to savor.
📍 Daewondang
191 Toegye-ro, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do Special Self-Governing Province
Day2. Dongnae Bakery

Nestled in a quiet alleyway, this is a charming dessert-focused bakery.
Though small, it offers a cozy spot to enjoy bread and desserts with a coffee or beverage, and their Mont Blanc is particularly renowned.
If you love crispy pastries and delightful desserts, you'll be thrilled with their extensive selection featuring puff pastries and tarts – it's definitely a place worth visiting!
📍 Dongnae Bakery
1st Floor, 19-1 Geodu-taekjigil 44beon-gil, Dongnae-myeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do Special Self-Governing Province
Day2. Shiryeowassal Cake (Rest & Rice Cake)

This is a place that specializes in selling delicious desserts made from rice!
Since mangoes are in season, they're offering an array of delightful cakes, sandwiches, and other desserts featuring fresh mango.
Located in the middle of the road, it's easily accessible by car or taxi.
Overall, their desserts are not overly sweet, making them wonderfully light and enjoyable without any guilt.
📍 Shiruwa Rice Cake
1st and 2nd Floors, 246 Jinaegotan-ro, Sinbuk-eup, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do Special Self-Governing Province (Shiruwa)
Day 2. Happy Chowon Ranch

To be able to experience such expansive nature
here in Korea...

This photo spot is located above Happy Chowon Ranch,
making it a bit challenging to reach,
(you have to climb a mountain path, so it can be tiring!)
but the view was absolutely worth the effort.

Beyond the photo zone, the ranch itself
offers various animal feeding experiences with sheep, cows, goats, rabbits, and more.
It's a fantastic place to visit with children.
📍 Happy Chowon Ranch
330-48 Chunhwa-ro, Sabuk-myeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do Special Self-Governing Province (Happy Chowon Ranch)
Day 2. Gubongsan Santorini Cafe

This cafe, inspired by Greece's Santorini,
is perched on a hillside.
It's a popular spot because you can enjoy the refreshing sky and sea views during the day,
and admire the stunning sunset in the evening.
They say the coffee is delicious, so if you're a coffee lover,
it's a great place to stop and relax during a drive.
📍 Santorini
1154-97 Sunhwan-daero, Dong-myeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do Special Self-Governing Province (Santorini)
Day 2. Heading Home

After two intense days and one night of exploring,
between 6 PM and 7 PM,
we wrapped up our itinerary by heading back to Seoul
to be ready for work the next day.
Wrapping Up
Today, I've shared the 1-night, 2-day Chuncheon travel itinerary
I experienced over a weekend.
If you have more stamina, annual leave, or vacation time,
you might want to break down the schedule further
or take your time to enjoy it at a more relaxed pace.
Also, regarding the tourist pass I mentioned earlier,
it's a time-based product (24 hours, 48 hours, etc.) from the moment you activate it,
so you can definitely get your money's worth, so make sure to get one!
You can find more diverse Gangwon-do travel information
