Chiang Mai's Mu Ping Matjip: Your Must-Try Thai Street Food Skewers
Discover Mu Ping, Thailand's irresistible grilled pork skewers. We'll guide you to Chiang Mai's legendary Mu Ping Matjip, a local favorite open only in the early mornings. Perfect for an authentic breakfast!

1. What is Mu Ping?
When you're exploring Thailand, there's one local dish you absolutely have to try!
And the one I'm most excited to recommend is Mu Ping.
While it might be a new name for first-time visitors to Thailand, Mu Ping is essentially Thai-style charcoal-grilled pork skewers. These delicious skewers feature pork marinated in a sweet and savory sauce, then grilled to perfection over hot charcoal.
It’s typically enjoyed with warm sticky rice, known as Khao Niao. Mu Ping makes for a fantastic, quick breakfast, or a delightful street-side snack as you wander through the vibrant Thai streets!

No matter where you travel in Thailand, you're bound to spot Mu Ping being sold by street vendors!
During my trip to Chiang Mai earlier this year in 2026, I certainly indulged in plenty of these delicious skewers while exploring the streets.

Prices can vary slightly between tourist hotspots and local areas, but even at the higher end, you'll typically pay around ~$0.27 to ~$0.55 per skewer. It’s incredibly affordable!
You can find them for as little as ~$0.14 each, making them a budget-friendly treat you can enjoy without any guilt.

My boyfriend often talks about how much he misses Mu Ping – it's one of his favorite Thai street foods!
Since we're planning another trip to Thailand for winter 2026-2027, I'm already looking forward to how many skewers we'll get to devour!

2. Chiang Mai's Mu Ping Matjip
Speaking of Chiang Mai Mu Ping, I stumbled upon a truly unique spot while browsing Google Maps. Its name was simply "Mu Ping Matjip" (which literally translates to "Mu Ping Restaurant" or "Mu Ping Spot"), and I knew I had to check it out!
Located in the Santitham area, it has that quintessential local Chiang Mai food stall vibe. What really drew me in was its early morning operating hours, starting right at dawn.
The fact that it's open only from 5:00 AM to 10:00 AM adds to its charm – it's such a unique schedule, not something you see every day!

3. Mu Ping Matjip Chiang Mai: Operating Hours & Price
With its incredibly early operating hours, from 5:00 AM to just 10:00 AM, this Santitham Mu Ping Matjip in Chiang Mai is a true early bird's delight. Sleep in, and you might just miss it!
In fact, one morning I overslept a bit and arrived around 9:30 AM, only to find they were completely sold out. Don't make the same mistake!

Before heading back home, I was determined to visit this particular spot, so one day I made sure to wake up extra early!
And the price? Just ~$0.16 per Mu Ping skewer!
I had initially heard it was ~$0.14, so the price had gone up slightly, but at ~$0.16, it's still incredibly cheap, don't you think?!

Of course, the skewers are on the smaller side, so you might want more than one. But if you're enjoying them as a snack rather than a full meal, one or two are perfectly satisfying!
For my simple breakfast, I opted for three Mu Ping skewers and a serving of sticky rice.
With that perfectly marinated pork grilled over charcoal, you get that incredible combination of a crispy exterior and a juicy, tender interior. Eating them fresh off the grill? Absolutely unbeatable!
4. Final Thoughts
While Thailand boasts a plethora of amazing local dishes, Mu Ping is a true standout. You'll find it almost anywhere, at any time, and its affordability means you can indulge without breaking the bank. Plus, its universally appealing sweet and savory flavor makes it a hit with everyone, young and old – definitely give it a try!
Since the skewers can be a little savory, I highly recommend pairing them with a side of chewy, warm sticky rice. It’s the perfect complement!
