3 Best Budget Hotels in Chiang Mai (2026): Old City & Nimman Picks
Discover 3 top budget hotels in Chiang Mai's Old City and Nimmanhemin for your 2026 trip. Find stylish stays, pools, and prime locations perfect for solo or duo travelers.
Quick answer
- Mali Hotel is great for solo/duo travelers, near Blue Noodle and North Gate Jazz.
- Somwang Boutique Hotel offers a pool in the Old City and includes breakfast.
- Stay with Nimman is a stylish 4-star hotel in Nimmanhemin, around ~$74/night.
- Book early for December 2026 festivals as hotels can sell out and prices rise.

During my two-week stay in Chiang Mai, I explored various hotels and resorts. As a solo traveler, I prioritize value-for-money over luxury. Here are my top three affordable picks in the Old City and Nimmanhemin areas.
1. Mali Hotel

Mali Hotel was my first stop when I arrived in Chiang Mai. It's situated in the northeast part of the Old City, and the popular Blue Noodle restaurant, a favorite among many travelers, is just a 7-minute walk (about 0.3 miles) away.

My absolute favorite smoothie bowl spot, Khun Kae's Juice Bar, is right outside. Plus, the famous North Gate Jazz Co-op and the vibrant Sunday Night Market are all within a 10-minute walk (around 0.5 miles). The accommodation has very few drawbacks; if I had to pick one, the soundproofing could be better. However, during my stay, there were no noisy guests, so I slept soundly every night.

The room is spacious enough to fully open a suitcase on the floor. For solo or duo travelers seeking incredible value, this place is hard to beat. Hotels and resorts within the Old City can sometimes feel a bit dated, so if you're looking for a comfortable place to sleep rather than a luxurious stay, Mali Hotel is a solid choice.
If a pool and modern facilities are high on your list, then Nimmanhemin or Santitham might be better areas to explore.
2. Somwang Boutique House

If you're looking for a hotel with a pool in the Old City, Somwang Boutique Hotel is a great option. While slightly pricier than Mali Hotel, it still offers an excellent value for your stay. Its location near Tha Phae Gate means you're within easy walking distance of the Old City's best eateries, cafes, and festive streets.

The rooms are arranged in a U-shape around a central swimming pool. Even if it rains, you can still enjoy a fun swim! The real highlights here are the pool and the excellent breakfast quality, which is included even with a standard room booking.

The Loy Krathong Festival in November 2026 and the various festivities leading up to the end of December mean accommodations can sell out quickly or prices can spike if you don't book in advance. Searching for Somwang Boutique House in December 2026, I noticed some dates are already fully booked. I highly recommend checking your desired dates as soon as possible!

3. Stay with Nimman

My final recommendation is Stay with Nimman Chiang Mai Hotel. Located at the entrance of Nimmanhemin, this hotel is so clean and stylish that I'd book it again in a heartbeat if I return to Chiang Mai. Compared to other hotels, the price is quite reasonable, and the exterior and interior room conditions are on par with much more luxurious options.

Maya Mall, Nimmanhemin's popular shopping center, is only a 10-minute walk (about 0.5 miles) away. Cross the street from Maya Mall, and you'll find countless fantastic restaurants and trendy cafes.

This 4-star hotel offers a very comfortable stay for around ~$74 per night.

I've hand-picked these three fantastic value accommodations for solo or duo travelers in Chiang Mai. Personally, I'd recommend booking a hotel near Nimmanhemin and then heading to the Old City for evening markets, jazz bars, and a lively atmosphere before returning to your quieter Nimman base. The difference in accommodation quality between Old City and Nimmanhemin can be quite significant. No matter which of these fantastic options you choose, you're guaranteed a great stay!
