Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Tour: What to Expect
Dreaming of drifting over fairy chimneys at sunrise? Here is an honest review of the legendary Cappadocia hot air balloon tour, including practical tips.
If there is one destination that belongs on every traveler's bucket list, it is Cappadocia, Türkiye. Drifting silently above the otherworldly fairy chimneys in a hot air balloon is a core memory that I still think about constantly.
To keep the wanderlust alive, I wanted to share a nostalgic look back at my experience on this bucket-list adventure, complete with some practical tips for anyone planning their own flight.

When you sign up for a Cappadocia balloon tour, your day starts early—and by early, I mean a 3:00 AM hotel pickup.
Why the middle-of-the-night wake-up call? Because the goal is to be high in the sky by 5:00 AM, just as the first light of dawn begins to paint the sky.
Keep in mind that hot air ballooning is highly dependent on mother nature. Much like chasing the Northern Lights, you need a bit of luck. If the winds are too strong, flights are grounded for safety. Fortunately, the weather gods were on my side, and we got the green light to fly.

Before heading to the launch site, they serve a quick pre-flight breakfast. To be completely honest, it was probably the least impressive meal I had during my entire time in Turkey! I just grabbed a few pieces of fruit, skipped the rest, and hopped back on the shuttle bus. Even years later, I still laugh remembering how bland that breakfast was.

Arriving at the launch field, it was pitch black and surprisingly chilly—definitely in the low 40s°F. As we stood there shivering, the crew began inflating the massive balloons, their burners lighting up the dark field like giant lanterns.

I bumped up the exposure on my camera to capture the action in the dark.

If you crank the exposure too high, the massive bursts of fire from the burners look almost explosive! It is an incredibly dramatic sight up close.

All across the valley, dozens of other balloons were slowly standing upright, getting ready for takeoff.

If you are wondering how you actually get into the balloon: you climb up a small ladder and step over into a deep wicker basket.
Because of this, I highly recommend wearing comfortable, flexible pants or leggings. Avoid skirts or tight jeans, as climbing in can be a bit awkward!
Once you are inside, the basket is divided into compartments to distribute the weight evenly, meaning you will stay in your designated section for the duration of the flight rather than moving around.

If you have a fear of heights, you might feel a bit anxious beforehand. However, once the balloon actually lifts off, those fears tend to melt away.
Unlike a plane or a roller coaster, there is absolutely no turbulence or shaking. The ascent is incredibly smooth and peaceful.

As the twilight sky began to glow, the view became absolutely surreal.
I have traveled to many incredible countries, but if I had to recommend just one place that everyone should visit once in their lifetime, it would always be Cappadocia.

Peering over the edge of the basket was a little intimidating, but the sheer beauty of the landscape filled me with an indescribable sense of awe.

Even if you decide not to fly, hiking up to one of the valley's viewpoints at dawn to watch the sky fill with hundreds of colorful balloons is an equally spectacular experience.

Directly below us, we could see the bizarre and beautiful rock formations of Rose Valley. The geological shapes here are truly unlike anything else on Earth.

Once the sun fully rose, the entire sky was dotted with balloons floating at different altitudes, creating a layered, dreamlike panorama.

After about an hour of drifting through the clouds, we slowly began our descent back down to earth.

The landing itself is a work of art. The ground crew guides the balloon to land directly onto the flatbed of a tracking trailer!
Once landed, everyone pitches in to help deflate and fold up the massive envelope.

To celebrate a successful flight, the crew sets up a traditional champagne toast right there in the field.

Sipping on champagne as the sun fully illuminated the valley was the perfect end to an unforgettable morning.

Türkiye is a place that captured my heart, and I cannot wait to return. If you ever get the chance, do not hesitate—book that balloon flight!
