Exploring Cappadocia Beyond Göreme
How to Visit Avanos Without a Guided Red Tour
Merhaba, fellow travelers!
It's Laura here, sharing my favorite insider tips for exploring the best of Turkey.
Avanos, a charming town famous for its historic red-clay pottery, is typically just a quick stop on the standard Cappadocia Red Tour. However, independent travelers don't need to book an expensive excursion to experience it. You can easily hop on a local dolmuş (minibus) and explore this artistic hub entirely at your own pace.

Getting from Göreme to Avanos

To catch the bus, head to the Göreme Bus Terminal (Göreme Otobüs Terminali). Right across from the terminal, near the cluster of ATMs, you will find the designated stop for the Avanos-bound dolmuş. Look for a minibus with "AVANOS" written clearly on the front windshield. While they generally run on a set schedule, local transit can sometimes be a few minutes behind, so don't worry if it doesn't arrive exactly on the dot.
The scenic drive from Göreme to Avanos is only about 8 miles and takes approximately 25 minutes. A single fare is incredibly cheap, usually costing around $1 USD, which you pay directly to the driver in cash.
📢 Quick Travel Tip: What is a Dolmuş? |
If you are traveling around Turkey, you will hear the word "dolmuş" (pronounced dol-mush) frequently. Meaning "stuffed" or "full" in Turkish, it refers to local shared minibuses that historically only departed once every seat was taken. Today, they operate more like regular buses with set routes. While the routes connecting Göreme, Avanos, Uçhisar, and Ürgüp run regularly, there are no automated stop announcements. It is always a good idea to double-check your destination with the driver before boarding. |
Best Things to Do in Avanos

Avanos is a peaceful, walkable town that you can comfortably explore in about 3 hours.
The Old Town |

As soon as you step off the dolmuş, you will be greeted by beautiful, unique pottery displays that highlight the town's rich heritage dating back to the Hittite period.

Wandering through the historic center leads you to a giant pottery monument and the iconic "AVANOS" sign—perfect for a quick photo op.
The Swinging Bridge |

Follow the path down toward the river and you will find a lively suspension bridge. It has quite a bit of bounce to it, which makes crossing it a fun, slightly dizzying adventure!

Once you cross, you will spot the only Starbucks in the entire Cappadocia region. It is a fantastic spot to grab an iced coffee and enjoy the scenic river views.
The Red River (Kızılırmak) |

The Red River is home to countless ducks and geese. Watching them paddle through the clear waters with the town's mosque rising in the background makes for an incredibly peaceful setting.
Avanos Viewpoint (Avanos Kalesi) |

If the weather is clear, make sure to walk up to the hill at Avanos Kalesi. It is the highest point in town and offers a stunning, panoramic view of the entire valley.
How to Head Back to Göreme

When you are ready to return, simply head to the bus stop directly across the street from where you first arrived. The return dolmuş also runs roughly once every hour.

Before boarding, check the sign on the dashboard to ensure it says "Göreme." If you are ever unsure, just ask the driver, "Göreme?" and they will gladly point you in the right direction.
Wrap-up & Travel Tips

Avanos might not have the flashy rock formations of Göreme, but its artistic soul and laid-back riverfront vibe make it a wonderful escape. If you are looking to get off the beaten path and enjoy a relaxed, budget-friendly day trip in Cappadocia, skip the tour buses and take the dolmuş instead.
