Porto - Cálem Winery Wine Tour with Fado Performance
When you think of Porto, Port wine is an absolute must!
Given how famous the wine is,
it's no surprise there are so many wineries!
You'll find wineries lining the banks of the Douro River,
stretching as far as the eye can see.
Porto's 'Big Three' iconic wineries are
Sandeman, Taylor, and Graham
What's fantastic is that Taylor Winery is the only one
offering Korean-language guides!
(A top recommendation if English isn't your strong suit)
I originally planned to visit one of these three,
but I was also keen to experience a Fado performance.
That's how I discovered Cálem Winery –
conveniently close to my accommodation and offering both!

Av. de Diogo Leite 344, 4400-111 Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal
Being so close to the Dom Luís I Bridge,
which links directly to Porto's city center,
made this Porto winery incredibly accessible – truly a prime location!
The day before my visit,
I decided to book my Cálem Winery tour via Google Maps.
Booking directly through the Google Maps app was incredibly easy!
Once your reservation is confirmed, a barcode will appear,
so make sure to capture it (a quick screenshot does the trick) to keep it safe!
I booked our visit for around 5 or 7 PM.
Even in the fading light, Cálem glowed brightly,
making it a breeze to spot from a distance!
Once inside, they quickly checked my reservation ticket.
After checking the ticket, they directed me to our guide.
The gate seemed to pass in a flash
(and yes, I was a bit flustered by how shaky my photo turned out!).
Stepping inside, you'll discover a fascinating
interactive area dedicated to all things wine!
The photo on the left shows a table where you can explore a delightful array of wine aromas.
Just pick a scent, take a sniff,
and then slide out the card beneath
to reveal its identity!
And of course, being all about wine, you'll find captivating
illustrations and descriptions of various grape varieties.
Plus, there's an insightful display showcasing the beautiful
spectrum of colors wine takes on as it ages.
As you explore this engaging space,
your guide for the day will soon arrive
to share their expertise!
Just a heads-up: all guided tours here are conducted in English!
While my English isn't perfect, I managed to piece together
most of the explanations (with a little bit of guesswork here and there!).
If you're hoping to catch every detail about the wine
and your English isn't fully fluent, remember that Taylor
Winery offers tours in Korean, which might be a great alternative.
Throughout the explanation,
they also incorporate engaging videos to enhance the experience.
Our next stop was the majestic wine storage area.
Prepare to be amazed as colossal oak barrels,
easily towering over a person, stretch out before your eyes!
Our guide began the explanation in front of one of these magnificent barrels,
even projecting a video onto it.
As the video showed,
the intuitive display of facts and figures
made everything incredibly easy to grasp.
A variety of wines
neatly displayed.
From 20-year-old Tawny Port wine,
with illustrations marking their age.
Moving on to the oak barrels nearby,
we got even more insights.
Next, we moved towards the screen
where Calem's various wines were introduced.
From White to Ruby, Tawny, and Rosé.
Each wine's aroma, grape variety,
sweetness, body, and more about Calem wines
were highlighted during this insightful session.
Honestly, I knew absolutely nothing about wine,
so this was a great chance to learn a little something!
Once the Calem winery tour concluded,
we moved on to the Fado performance hall.
Circular tables were arranged
all around the performance area, so we just took the seats
the staff guided us to.
On our tables, the pre-selected wines
based on the tour package we chose were waiting.
(Since I'm not a wine connoisseur anyway, I opted for the basic selection!)
Each seat had wine already poured into a glass,
along with some biscuits to enjoy as a snack.
We had Calem's Fine White Port and
the red wine, a 10-year-old Tawny Port.
Before the Fado performance began, our guide
gave a brief explanation, and then the show started.
Photography wasn't allowed during the Fado performance,
so I only managed to capture one shot afterward.
We had one male vocalist, one female vocalist,
one guitarist, and one musician playing a similar instrument,
a total of four people performing Fado.
They performed various songs, including one by the female vocalist, one by the male vocalist,
and some duets.
Listening to the music with wine in hand
was truly a unique experience.
I really loved being able to enjoy Port wine
while watching the Fado performance.
Even though I didn't understand the lyrics due to the language barrier,
the overall atmosphere and feeling of the songs
really gave me a sense of what Fado is all about.
After completing the winery tour and Fado performance,
you can purchase souvenirs.
I browsed through Calem's wide selection of Port wines,
but since I'm not very knowledgeable about wine
and probably wouldn't drink a whole bottle if I bought one, I decided to buy a set of miniature wines
to try various flavors.
(6 bottles, 50 ml each - 13 Euros)
I haven't had a chance to try them yet since bringing them back to Korea,
but since they include everything from white to red wines,
I'm looking forward to a diverse tasting experience!
I'm definitely planning to try it soon!
If you're heading to Porto and dream of experiencing a Fado performance

The Fado performance features a total of four performers: one male vocalist, one female vocalist, and two guitarists. During the performance, Cálem's Fine White Port, a 10-year-old Tawny Port, and biscuits are served.
At Cálem Cellars, you can purchase various Port wine souvenirs after the tour. Specifically, a set of 6 miniature wines (50ml each), offering a range of flavors from white to red wine, costs 13 euros.
