Gongju's Famous Buja Tteokjib: Weekend Waiting Tips
Must-Try Chestnut Mochi & Sweet Pumpkin Siru
If you are planning a trip to Gongju, Buja Tteokjib is an absolute must-visit spot on your itinerary!
Just as Daejeon is famous for Sungsimdang Bakery, Gongju's culinary pride is split between Bakery Bammaul and the legendary Buja Tteokjib.
Curious to see if the hype was real, I headed to Gongju Sanseong Market during the busy May holiday weekend in 2026.
However, my first attempt was a complete disaster. Seeing the massive line wrapping around the block at Buja Tteokjib, I had to turn back with tears in my eyes and head over to the nearby Gongju Chestnut Bread headquarters instead.
There was even a sign posted on a nearby utility pole warning eager customers that the famous Chestnut Mochi and other popular items were already completely sold out for the day.
Determined to satisfy my craving, I came up with a strategic game plan and decided to attempt an "open run" the very next morning.
Buja Tteokjib Basic Information
Address: 11 Yongdang-gil, Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do
Hours: 09:00 AM - 06:30 PM
Phone: 041-854-5454
Parking Tip: You can use the Gongju Sanseong Market Public Parking Lot. Since I went for a weekend morning "open run" and figured the line would move fast, my husband drove around the block while I hopped out to make a quick purchase.
The Reality of a Weekend Open Run

Buja Tteokjib is located right along the main road of Gongju Sanseong Market.
While there are other rice cake shops inside the market (which seem to be popular with local residents), Buja Tteokjib is overwhelmingly famous among tourists, and the main reason is their legendary Chestnut Mochi (Albam-mochi).
Gongju is nationwide famous for its high-quality chestnuts, so you'll find plenty of chestnut-infused treats here. But the chestnut rice cakes at Buja Tteokjib are truly on another level!

The storefront is covered in Blue Ribbon Survey stickers (Korea's equivalent of the Michelin Guide), and the sheer volume of Gongju chestnut sacks stacked up inside is mind-blowing!
I even got to watch the staff cleaning and preparing the heavy-duty rice cake machinery.
The official opening time for Buja Tteokjib is 9:00 AM.
Learning from my painful failure the day before, I knew that showing up right at 9:00 AM on a weekend would mean waiting in a brutal queue. I rushed over and arrived at the shop around 8:43 AM.
To my surprise, even though it was nearly 20 minutes before the official opening time, the doors were already open and people were already lining up inside to buy rice cakes!
I realized that if I had been even slightly later, I would have been stuck in a massive crowd again.
If you are visiting on a weekend or holiday, I highly recommend arriving 15 to 20 minutes before the official opening time.

Finally, I stepped inside the legendary Buja Tteokjib!

As soon as you walk in, the rich, sweet aroma of freshly steamed rice cakes fills the air.
It was incredibly fascinating to watch the staff making the traditional rice cakes in real-time through the open kitchen area.
The Rice Cake Lineup & Varieties

The sweet pumpkin rolls looked incredibly soft and delicious, very similar to the famous Chang-eok rice cakes. I seriously debated buying them but managed to hold back.

Along with the Chestnut Mochi, the best-sellers here are the Mugwort Chestnut Siru and Pumpkin Chestnut Siru, so those went straight into my basket!

I also wanted to try their signature "Buja Rice Cake," which is named after the shop itself, but unfortunately, it wasn't ready yet when I visited.
Even though the shelves were mostly packed, during an early morning open run, some specific varieties might still be in the kitchen being prepared.

And here is the star of the show: the famous Chestnut Mochi!
While they used to sell these individually, they are now packaged in boxes of 3 or 8. Take it from someone who has tried them—do yourself a favor and buy the 8-pack box!
I'll explain exactly why in a moment.

They also offer domestic shipping, so I grabbed a brochure to share the details on my blog. Sadly, I think the cashier accidentally cleared it away while checking me out because I couldn't find it in my bag later!
Please note that not all rice cakes can be shipped; only select items are available for bulk shipping orders.
Honest Review: Chestnut Mochi, Pumpkin Chestnut Siru, & Mugwort Chestnut Siru

Since we had more travel plans ahead and the weather was warm, I didn't want the rice cakes to spoil. I resisted temptation and bought just three items.
1. Chestnut Mochi (8-pack) - ~$13

I tried to film a clean cross-section video, but honestly, it's much better to just take a big bite instead of trying to tear it apart by hand—it gets a bit messy!

Each mochi features a super thin, incredibly soft rice cake layer wrapping a giant, whole Gongju chestnut and sweet red bean paste. Eating it fresh at the shop, I thought, "Okay, this is delicious, but is it really worth waiting in a massive line for? Or is it just social media hype?"

BUT the real magic happened once I got back home.
I popped the remaining mochi into the freezer and let them thaw naturally before eating. Oh my goodness! The texture of the rice cake skin became incredibly dense and chewy, and the cold red bean paste paired with the chestnut was ten times better than eating them fresh!
That was the exact moment I understood why everyone raves about this place.
Do yourself a favor: buy the large box, freeze them immediately, and let them thaw naturally before eating!
2. Pumpkin Chestnut Siru (Small) - ~$2

The natural sweetness of the pumpkin combined with the nutty flavor of the chestnuts and the light, crumbly texture of the steamed sirutteok was absolutely delightful.
This is a crowd-pleasing flavor that anyone of any age will love!
3. Mugwort Chestnut Siru (Small) - ~$2

I had high expectations for this one, but I found the mugwort aroma to be a bit too subtle for my taste.
Personally, I thought the Pumpkin Chestnut Siru was much more flavorful and satisfying.
Quick Q&A Guide for Your Visit
Q1. What time should I arrive on weekends or holidays to beat the crowd?
A. Although the official opening time is 9:00 AM, I highly recommend arriving around 8:40 AM to ensure you get what you want without the brutal wait.
Q2. Are all rice cake varieties available right at opening?
A. They make their rice cakes continuously, but some items (like the signature Buja Rice Cake) might not be ready right at 8:40 AM. However, bestsellers like Chestnut Mochi and Pumpkin Chestnut Siru are fully stocked.
Q3. Should I get the 3-pack or 8-pack of Chestnut Mochi?
A. Definitely go for the 8-pack! Freezing them and letting them thaw naturally makes them so chewy and delicious that they will disappear in seconds.
Q4. Will the rice cakes spoil during travel?
A. It's best to buy what you can consume on the day of purchase. If you plan to buy in bulk or have a long journey home, bringing an insulated cooler bag with ice packs is highly recommended!
Wrapping Up

After making my speedy purchase, I stepped outside and took this photo at exactly 8:51 AM!
Even before the official opening hour, the queue had already stretched all the way down the street, passing the storefront of the chestnut bread bakery I visited yesterday.
I felt an absolute rush of victory! If I had arrived just 10 minutes later, I would have been stuck at the very end of that massive line. Our early morning hustle paid off perfectly.
When it comes to famous food spots, timing and a little bit of morning hustle are everything!
Keep these tips in mind for your visit to Buja Tteokjib, and enjoy a stress-free gourmet experience in Gongju.

Gongju Sanseong Market Eats: Gongju Chestnut Bread Store Review & Prices
📍 Buja Tteokjib
11 Yongdang-gil, Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do
The official opening time is 9:00 AM, but on weekends or public holidays, it is recommended to arrive around 8:40 AM. Since long lines form even before 9:00 AM, arriving 15 to 20 minutes early will ensure you can make your purchase safely.
Rather than eating it right after purchase, it is highly recommended to freeze it first and let it thaw naturally before eating. Once thawed, the glutinous rice dough becomes much chewier, allowing you to fully enjoy the texture of the red bean paste and the whole chestnut.
Popular signature items like Albam Mochi and Hobam Siru will already be stocked on the shelves and ready for purchase. However, certain items, such as the store's namesake Buja Tteok, might not be available at such an early hour.
Not all rice cakes sold in the store can be shipped. Please note that delivery is only available for bulk orders of a few specifically designated items.
