Craving a taste of Gongju? Head to Bakery Bammameul for their legendary chestnut pies! We'll show you how to enjoy these local delights and save money with special discounts.
A recent holiday weekend saw me taking a quick overnight trip to Gongju and Buyeo in Chungcheongnam-do. Gongju is famously known for its delicious chestnuts, and I couldn't resist making a special stop to pick up some of their renowned chestnut pies!
📍 Bakery Bammameul
5-9 Baekmigoeul-gil, Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea

Bakery Bammameul is conveniently located right across the street from Gongsanseong Fortress, one of Gongju's most iconic historical sites. I first discovered this gem when a coworker shared one of their pies with me – and it was absolutely divine! From that moment, I vowed to visit this bakery whenever I found myself in Gongju.

It was a humid day, threatening rain and making me quite sweaty, so I decided to order an Iced Chestnut Latte to cool down.

Being a holiday, the bakery was incredibly crowded, and I waited about 30 minutes to make my purchase. It's often called the 'Sungsimdang of Gongju' due to its popularity! A helpful tip: if you're an expectant mother, presenting a pregnancy badge allows for faster entry, bypassing the queue.

Beyond the famous chestnut pies, Bakery Bammameul offers a delightful array of other chestnut-infused desserts:
Bammameul Cheese Tart: ~$2
Chestnut Pandoro: ~$5
Handmade Gelato: ~$3
Macarons: ~$2
Bammameul Yanggaeng (Sweet Jelly): ~$2
These are individual prices, but they also sell many attractive gift packages, perfect for souvenirs!

Present an online Gongju Citizen ID for a 5% discount
Onnuri Gift Certificates are accepted

The 'Online Gongju Citizen' program allows anyone in South Korea to sign up online and receive discounts at various affiliated stores throughout Gongju. Simply sign up via the link below, take a screenshot of your digital ID, and present it at checkout for a 5% discount! This program offers benefits beyond the bakery, even applying to attractions like the Goma Train.
While Gongju Pay, the local currency, was not accepted, Onnuri Gift Certificates were a valid payment method. As of 2026, you can often purchase Onnuri Gift Certificates through an app at a 7% discount. Now, for a little math problem:
If three boxes of 6-piece chestnut pies plus two iced chestnut lattes totaled ~$37, how much did I save? After applying the 5% discount, the price dropped to ~$35. Then, by purchasing a ~$35 Onnuri Gift Certificate for ~$32, the overall savings were quite substantial! If you're planning on buying a lot, this strategy is definitely worth considering.

I was hoping to try an éclair, but they were unfortunately sold out!

With so many customers, the bakers were constantly busy, churning out fresh batches of chestnut pies. A freshly baked Bammameul pie is truly something special! The pastry is wonderfully crisp, filled with a rich chestnut paste, and even has whole chestnuts inside for an extra delightful bite. It's incredibly smooth, not overly sweet, and so delicious you could easily eat several!

The Iced Chestnut Latte was also a pleasant surprise – not just a melted chestnut ice cream flavor, but subtly sweet and refreshing, with real chestnut bits that added a nice texture. I highly recommend the latte too! If you're visiting Gongju, make sure to try the Bammameul chestnut pie, a fantastic local specialty, and don't forget to use those discounts!
You can receive a 5% discount by presenting an online Gongju Citizen Card. Additionally, Onnuri Gift Certificates can be used for payment, and you can purchase them through an app at a 7% discount to use them.
Gongju Pay, a local currency, cannot be used at Bakery Bammaru. However, Onnuri Gift Certificates are accepted, and you can purchase them through an app at a 7% discount.
On Buddha's Birthday holiday, we waited about 30 minutes to make a purchase. Presenting a pregnant woman's badge allows for a bypass, so expectant mothers can enter quickly.
