It's the perfect spot to visit, whether it's raining, snowing, sweltering in the summer heat, or freezing in the winter cold. You can enjoy a comfortable and engaging experience, combining both fascinating exhibits and hands-on activities. Expect to spend about 1.5 to 2 hours exploring everything it has to offer.

I visited on my first weekend after moving to Sejong City in July 2026. It was an easy, short drive from Sejong, making it an excellent addition to a weekend itinerary in Gongju.

Meet the Surprisingly Adorable Jinmyosu

Upon arriving at the museum, the first thing that captured my attention was the Jinmyosu, the National Gongju Museum's iconic artifact.

The Jinmyosu is a stone guardian beast unearthed from King Muryeong's Tomb, an imaginary creature meant to protect the burial site.

Despite its solemn role, its actual appearance exudes a strangely endearing, almost clumsy charm. Seeing it in person, I instantly understood why it's such a beloved mascot for the museum.

King Muryeong's Tomb Artifacts: Even More Dazzling in Person

The heart of the National Gongju Museum lies in the Ungjin Baekje Hall on the first floor.

Here, you can witness a stunning array of artifacts unearthed from King Muryeong's Tomb, including the actual Jinmyosu, the coffins of King Muryeong and his queen, and various exquisite gold ornaments.

While Silla is often the first kingdom that comes to mind when thinking of lavish gold crowns and accessories in Korean history, the Baekje artifacts I saw in person were equally magnificent and intricately crafted.

The gold crown ornaments, in particular, caught my eye. Up close, their detailed patterns and decorations were truly impressive, offering a completely different experience than simply viewing them in photographs.

During my visit in July 2026, the museum was also running a Baekje Cultural Heritage Week quiz event. Solving the activity sheet, much like a treasure hunt for kids, encouraged me to examine artifacts I might have otherwise overlooked. It made the exhibition far more engaging and immersive than a typical visit. (Yes, I was enthusiastically competing among many children, haha!)

Unlike exhibits where you can only look, experiencing the shapes and textures through touch made the history truly come alive. This feature makes it an ideal indoor destination in Gongju for families visiting with children.

Engaging Events and a Dedicated Children's Experience Room

During my visit, there were various interactive experiences available, including a 'Time Travel to Baekje!' event, scratch paper art, photo booths, and a fun 'pole-catching' game.

I participated in the 'Time Travel' event and took some fun photos. These small activities might seem minor, but they created some really enjoyable memories during my visit.
