Booking Your Japan Shinkansen Tickets

At first, I debated buying tickets directly at the station or through the official JR website.
However, booking on the official JR Shinkansen site can be quite a headache,
from creating an account to foreign credit card registration issues.
So, I ended up using Klook, my go-to travel app ‼️
It offers seamless English support,
there's virtually no price difference, and payment
was incredibly smooth and secure.

Which Shinkansen train
should you book?
The route from Osaka (Shin-Osaka Station) to Tokyo is part of the
Tokaido Shinkansen line,
connecting Osaka - Kyoto - Nagoya - Shin-Yokohama - Tokyo.
There are 3 main types of trains on this line:
🚄 Nozomi (のぞみ) — The fastest.
Takes about 2.5 hours, stopping only at major stations.
🚄 Hikari (ひかり) — Medium speed, takes about 3 hours. Unreserved seats available!
A great balance of value and flexibility.
🚄 Kodama (こだま) — Stops at every single station.
Takes about 4 hours.
The base fare is identical for all three,
but the reserved seat fees differ slightly.
Trains run incredibly frequently—about
one every 10 minutes starting from 6 AM,
so you can easily book one that fits your itinerary.
I wanted to get to my destination as fast as possible,
so I booked the Nozomi Shinkansen.
How to Book on Klook

1) Click here for the Klook Shinkansen Page
2) Select your Departure and Arrival stations.
3) Choose your Date + Departure Time.

4) Choose between Unreserved / Reserved seats.
5) Board the train easily with your QR code.

I was actually worried I might sleep in,
so I literally booked my ticket on the subway
heading to the station that morning—it was that fast.
+ Just keep in mind that the coveted Mt. Fuji view seats are super popular
and can sell out days in advance.
Unreserved vs. Reserved Seats

Unreserved vs. Reserved

For the Nozomi, the price difference is only about ~$5.
For the Hikari, it's just a ~$2 difference.
However, selecting Mt. Fuji view seats, window seats, or aisle seats
may incur a slight additional fee.
If you're traveling during weekends, peak season, Golden Week, or in a large group,
I highly recommend getting a Reserved seat. But if you're solo or a couple on a weekday, Unreserved is usually fine.
+ Note: During extreme peak seasons (like New Year's),
unreserved cars might be entirely suspended on certain days.
Since I traveled on a weekday,
I easily grabbed a window seat in the unreserved section ‼️
Unfortunately, the Mt. Fuji view seats were already
snapped up by the time I booked.

🗻 Pro Tip: How to see Mt. Fuji on the Shinkansen
Osaka → Tokyo: Sit on the LEFT side (Seats D & E)
Tokyo → Osaka: Sit on the RIGHT side (Seats D & E)
I was also a bit worried about my luggage.
If the total dimensions (length + width + height) of your suitcase exceed 63 inches (160cm),
it's classified as Oversized Baggage!
In this case, you MUST reserve a specific seat at the back of the car.
For standard carry-ons and medium suitcases,
you can simply lift them onto the overhead racks.

If you're leaving from Osaka, you'll board at Shin-Osaka Station (not Osaka Station).

Shinkansen trains depart exactly on the dot. It's best to arrive at
Shin-Osaka Station about 20-30 minutes early
so you don't feel rushed.
There's plenty of English signage everywhere,
so finding your platform is a breeze even if it's your first time.

Just scan your QR ticket at the gates and head through.
Check your train number on the digital boards, wait at your designated platform, and hop on!

Inside the station, there are 7-Elevens, Starbucks, and Ekiben (station bento) shops.
Grab some snacks and drinks
before you board!

The Green Car (First Class) features a 2-2 seating layout.
The standard unreserved cars have a 3-2 layout.

When you scan your QR code at the gate, a small seat slip pops out.
The conductor walks through the aisles
to check tickets,
so just place it visibly in the ticket holder in front of you.

There are power outlets by the window seats, so you can charge your phone,
and eating on the train is perfectly acceptable.

My Hello Kitty Ekiben paired with a 7-Eleven iced latte was perfection :)
Note: In-train food carts are mostly discontinued on these routes,
so definitely buy your treats before boarding.

There is free Wi-Fi on board, but it can be a bit spotty,
so I mostly relied on my travel eSIM data.

I ended up dozing off halfway through
and missed whatever view of Mt. Fuji there was,
but getting from Osaka to Tokyo
was incredibly smooth and comfortable :)
I had considered taking a domestic flight,
but when you factor in the time and cost of getting to and from the airports,
the Shinkansen is absolutely the better deal.

The onboard restrooms are also super clean and modern!

Once I arrived at Tokyo Station,
I immediately activated my Tokyo Metro Pass
and kicked off my city sightseeing ><🩵

Osaka - Nagoya - Yokohama - Tokyo Shinkansen:
Booking through Klook
is so much more intuitive than the official site 🩵
Unreserved seats were completely stress-free on a weekday,
and skipping the ticket office lines with a QR code was a game changer.
If you're planning to travel across multiple regions in Japan,
experiencing the romance of the Shinkansen is an absolute must :)
