How to Get to Bled Castle
📍 Bled Castle
Grajska cesta 61, 4260 Bled, Slovenia
📍 Heart of Bled
Lake Bled, 4260 Bled, Slovenia, 4260 Bled, Slovenia
Bled Castle is within walking distance
from the heart of Bled.
While you can use a bicycle,
walking is recommended due to the steep uphill climb.

There's a path that leads up to the castle,
taking you past St. Martin's Church from Lake Bled.

Since the castle is perched on a cliff,
you'll need to climb a hillside path with stairs.
It takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes to reach the top.

The mountain path is well-maintained with stairs throughout,
and clear signposts are available,
so finding your way isn't difficult at all.

If you're visiting by car, you can use the
Bled Castle parking lot located on the hill.
At 3 EUR per hour, the price is quite steep.
Parking lots near Lake Bled typically cost
4 EUR to 4.5 EUR per hour,
so if there's no free parking available, this spot is actually cheaper.
Especially if you're traveling with young children or seniors,
since there are quite a lot of stairs inside the castle,
I'd recommend using a car to conserve your energy.

1. Free Viewpoint Before Entry

As you climb the mountain path and reach Bled Castle,
you'll find a spacious park in front of the high castle walls.

The Castle Park, with its terraced greenery,
is a place everyone can enjoy freely.

In front of the Castle Park, there's a small viewpoint,
where I could gaze down at the stunning scenery of Lake Bled.

Although the view was somewhat obstructed by trees,
I could still enjoy the emerald hues of the lake.
However, from this spot, I couldn't see Bled Island,
which made it a bit disappointing as a viewpoint.

Above Castle Park, you'll find the entrance to Bled Castle.
There's a ticket office located further up from the entrance, so
you can explore the castle grounds up to the ticket office for free.

Since the rather steep hill is made of stone paths,
be sure to move carefully if it's raining or snowing.

Inside the gate, there was an upper area that looked like it might have been used as a watchtower,
so I went up to explore.
But there wasn't anything particularly special to see.

Instead, as you ascend the steep hill,
you'll be able to enjoy some truly magnificent views.

From afar, you can behold the majestic Julian Alps,
and right in front, charming villages are nestled,
offering a peaceful and beautiful panoramic view of Bled.

While the view towards Lake Bled is blocked from here,
to capture the stunning scenery of the villages and the Alps,
the stone path on the hillside was also a fantastic photo spot!
2. The Lower Courtyard: Your First Glimpse Inside the Castle

As you ascend the hill from the castle entrance, you'll encounter the ticket office.
The admission fee for adults is 19 Euros, which can feel quite pricey!
I actually hesitated a bit about whether to go in or not,
but I decided to enter because I truly wanted to experience the Lake Bled view.

Once inside the castle, I quickly realized it was quite expansive!
The lower courtyard and buildings you see right after entering
truly exude a strong medieval atmosphere.

This area once housed the daily life and defensive functions of the castle,
with various facilities centered around the courtyard.

Upstairs, in particular, there was a special space where you could take in the castle's interior and the surrounding landscape at a glance,
and you can reach it via an external staircase.

I went up there myself and looked around,
and from that vantage point, you can see not only various parts of the castle
but also Lake Bled shimmering below.
I highly recommend climbing up to soak in the incredible views!
3. The Printing House: A Recreation of Gutenberg's Printing Press
At Bled Castle, each exhibition space comes with explanations and
a QR code.
You can listen to a free audio guide.
Since the audio guide is available in various languages,
it's a great idea to bring your earphones when you visit!

The most popular spot in the lower courtyard was
the experiential space, the Printing House.
It's a place where you can explore the printing technology of medieval Europe and the history of Slovenia
all in one fascinating experience!

There's a printing press here that recreates Gutenberg's 15th-century method,
showing exactly how things were done back then.
They even directly demonstrate the manual printing methods of that era,
and visitors can try their hand at making their own souvenir prints
on handmade paper.

Even if you don't opt for the hands-on experience, you can still purchase beautiful handmade products
as souvenirs.
When I visited, a family was enjoying the printing experience,
and I watched them for a little while before moving on.
The kids absolutely loved it!

Upstairs from the print shop, there’s a small exhibition space
where you can explore fascinating content related to the first book in Slovene,
the printing methods of that time, and the authors who contributed to it.
Adjacent to this, there was an exhibition dedicated to handmade medieval arrows.
It’s not a huge area, so you can easily browse through it.
4. The Wine Cellar: Slovenian Wines and Traditional Bottling Methods

Bled Castle also boasts a wine cellar cleverly built into the rock face.
You can even taste the wines directly or buy them as souvenirs.

Various wines were on display further inside,
but I didn't venture too deep as I felt a little overwhelmed,
so I just took a quick peek at the entrance before heading out.
Slovenia is actually well-known for its wine,
so if you're a wine enthusiast, you should definitely pop in for a visit!
5. Lake Bled and the Island at a Glance! The Observation Terrace and Restaurant

Without a doubt, the highlight of Bled Castle is
its observation terrace.
I highly recommend it as the best spot to truly soak in the emerald beauty of Lake Bled.
From here, you get a panoramic view of Lake Bled stretching out below,
and there are plenty of spots on the terrace where you can sit and relax.
There's also a cozy little cafe area nearby,
perfect for taking a break while admiring the stunning scenery.

The view of the lake from up here is so breathtakingly beautiful
that I just couldn't tear myself away and kept staring at it.
The area was bustling with people,
and everyone, without exception, was uttering gasps of admiration.

This is **such a popular spot for photos** because you can capture Bled Island perfectly in your shots!
I hadn't seen any fellow Koreans in Bled until this moment, but I serendipitously met some and we ended up taking pictures for each other – what a lovely surprise!
The **views from this spot alone made the entrance fee completely worth it**, and honestly, **if I had more time, I would have loved to just stay and soak it all in for longer.**

Climb the stairs from the terrace, and you'll discover **a spacious upper courtyard** up there.
Here, you'll find a **chapel, a museum, and a restaurant.**

A low railing stretches out towards the lake, offering an incredible spot to enjoy the refreshing views.
They even have **seats in the restaurant where you can enjoy a meal with a view,** so naturally, it was bustling with people!

Instead of dining, I chose to stand by the railing, gazing down at Bled Island.
It was **a little daunting with the cliff right in front,** but the view was so breathtaking, I simply couldn't tear my eyes away!

Intrigued by a unique space in front of the restaurant, I ventured closer to find a **wedding hall** nestled inside!
The entrance was blocked, so I couldn't go in, but just imagining a wedding in such an ancient, majestic castle – it must be a truly unforgettable and **extraordinary celebration!**

I even discovered a **hidden photo zone** inside, complete with a chair where I could sit and capture some memorable shots.
There's actually so much more to see throughout the castle than you might expect, so I definitely **recommend giving yourself plenty of time** to explore it all!
6. The Chapel: 16th-Century Gothic Style and Baroque Frescoes

Tucked away in the innermost part of the upper courtyard, you'll find **the chapel.**

It's a rather small, intimate space, yet incredibly rich in history. Originally built in the **Gothic style,** it was later renovated and **Baroque elements were added,** making it a place of **significant historical value right within the castle!**

On the walls, you can still find some **partially preserved murals depicting Bled's rich history.**
With various ancient ornaments displayed upfront, it felt like the space is now used more as an exhibition hall rather than a traditional place of worship.

If you get a chance to visit the chapel,
I highly recommend taking a moment to look all the way up to the ceiling.
The frescoes up there are actually better preserved than those on the walls,
so you can admire even more intricate details.
7. The Museum: Where Bled's History and Culture Come Alive

Right next to the chapel, you'll find a **museum** dedicated to Bled Castle and the wider Bled region's history and culture.

From captivating artworks portraying Bled Castle perched atop its cliff,
to fascinating artifacts spanning from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages,
everything was thoughtfully displayed with detailed explanations.

It was incredible to explore the diverse environments and ways of life of the people who've called the Bled region home throughout different eras.

I particularly felt that the medieval era exhibitions
paired perfectly with the castle's ambiance.

In one area, **the most significant moment in Bled's history** was depicted
in various compelling ways.
This portrays **King Henry II of Germany bestowing the Bled territory** upon Archbishop Albuin.
It was during this period that the name 'Bled' first appeared in historical records,
and later, a fortress was built, giving rise to the Bled Castle we see today.
Henry II later ascended to become the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire,
which explains why a religious element is often present in the depictions.

While it might not be a massive museum,
it offers **a wonderful variety of exhibitions to explore**, and with **special exhibitions running periodically**,
it truly enriches the overall experience of visiting Bled Castle.
8. The Souvenir Shop

Inside Bled Castle, you'll also find a charming **souvenir shop**.
While they offered a range of items like clothing and magnets,
**the magnets from the printing house were by far the most unique and memorable.**
They also featured **local Slovenian products**,
and I was particularly captivated by the array of truffle products.
However, I found that prices for similar items were more affordable at SPAR (a local supermarket),
so I'd **recommend focusing on purchasing souvenirs uniquely related to Bled Castle** here.
Initially, I admit the entrance fee felt a bit steep,
but after exploring every nook and cranny, both inside and out, I was so utterly enchanted that
the cost felt completely worth it.
So, if you're planning **a trip to Bled,**
**I wholeheartedly recommend making Bled Castle a must-visit!**
