Exploring Beijing's historic Shichahai? Don't miss the chance to savor Kaolengmian, a grilled noodle delight with egg and sausage. This quick, flavorful street food is perfect for an authentic taste of China. Find this hidden gem in a bustling food court and experience a local favorite!
When you embark on a trip to Beijing, one of the must-visit attractions is undoubtedly Shichahai (什刹海). This historic area, with its serene lakes and charming hutongs, is perfect for a leisurely stroll.
Today, for those exploring Shichahai and looking for a quick, delicious bite, I'm thrilled to introduce you to a fantastic spot for Kaolengmian (烤冷面), often called 'grilled cold noodles'!
Shichahai Food Court Kaolengmian
The Kaolengmian spot I visited is conveniently located in a food court near Shichahai. I actually stumbled upon it while planning to visit the famous Sugarbar cafe, known for its incredible views, which is situated right above this bustling food hub.
Exploring the food court, I found a fantastic array of Chinese snacks perfect for a quick bite. From lamb skewers and sausages to grilled corn and spicy Mala skewers, everything looked incredibly tempting!
As expected from a food court, there are plenty of tables inside, so you can comfortably sit down and enjoy your meal.
Among the many stalls, I chose Tudounihuo Jimian (土豆泥火鸡面), which specializes in Kaolengmian. The name roughly translates to 'Mashed Potato Turkey Noodles,' though I was there for their famed grilled noodles!
They offer a variety of dishes, including spicy turkey noodles, Kaolengmian, and Chongqing noodles. I ordered the Egg Sausage Kaolengmian (鸡蛋烤肠烤冷面), which cost 19 Yuan, or about ~$3.
Kaolengmian, as the name suggests, involves grilling a sheet of cold noodles, then adding various toppings and a special sauce. It's truly one of my favorite Chinese street foods!
The chef cracks an egg over the grilling noodles, then adds sausage, onions, and a generous drizzle of their secret sauce.
Once cooked, it's cut into perfect bite-sized pieces, making it super easy to enjoy on the go.
Kaolengmian is truly best when eaten hot and fresh. The chewy texture of the noodles combined with that incredible special sauce creates an explosion of savory flavor – it's absolutely addictive! My only thought was that adding some extra vegetables would have made it even more perfect.
While Kaolengmian is gaining popularity in other countries, nothing beats tasting this authentic street food right here in China. If you're looking for a simple yet incredibly satisfying snack while exploring Shichahai, I highly recommend checking out this Kaolengmian spot.
You can easily find the location details using popular mapping apps when you're in the area!
