As a self-proclaimed bread enthusiast, my Beijing trip wouldn't be complete without a bakery pilgrimage. That's how I stumbled upon the 'Hongxing Qianjin Bread and Milk Company'!
Its name and exterior screamed retro Chinese style, and the queues filled with locals only piqued my curiosity further. Hearing it operated on a 'daily production, daily sale' principle and offered fresh milk products, I knew I had to go in!
I visited two branches, the 📍Beijing New World Department Store branch & Wukesong branch, both conveniently located on the first floor of their respective department stores. (Why two? I bought a few items, loved them, and had to go back for more at another spot!)
From afar, the bright red star logo and retro aesthetic instantly catch your eye. Hongxing Qianjin is a true local Beijing brand, with 12 locations in total: 11 across Beijing and just one in Shanghai.
Exploring the Hongxing Qianjin Brand
Upon digging a little deeper into this bakery I discovered by happy accident, I learned its full name is 'Hongxing Qianjin Bread and Milk Company (红星前进面包牛奶公司, Hóngxīng Qiánjìn)', a super popular retro-themed bakery brand in Beijing.
✅️ Brand History: This brand started about four years ago in 2022 in Beijing. With its vintage charm and commitment to freshness, it quickly became a 'wanghong' (internet celebrity) bakery, captivating social media.
✅️ Core Concept: They strictly adhere to the 'daily production, daily sale' policy. Beyond delicious bread, their signature offering is fresh milk, which you can even pour yourself right in the store!
✅️ Rapid Growth: Riding on the success of their bread and milk stores, they've even expanded into a line of cream cakes, firmly establishing themselves as a hotspot among Beijing's 20-30-somethings by 2026.
Hoo... no wonder I'd never seen it in cities outside Beijing!
The Bakery Lineup
Stepping inside, the aroma of freshly baked bread is intoxicating. The main display is piled high with various loaves, immediately drawing your attention!
They offer a wide variety of plain loaves, like their rich milk bread, and many variations including garlic bread, intense chocolate bread, jam bread, coconut bread, rousong bread (pork floss), and fluffy castella-style bread.
I tried the Chocolate Black Spot Bread, Cheese Bread, and Layered Bread, and honestly, they all exceeded expectations and come highly recommended! (They'll slice it for you if you ask.)
✔️Cheese Bread: No exaggeration, it's like a premium white bread base, generously loaded with cheese cubes. Delicious on its own, heavenly when toasted.
⭐️ ✔️Chocolate Black Spot Bread: The outside is a soft, fluffy chocolate castella, while the inside is moist and chewy white bread – a uniquely delicious combination I, as a bread lover, had never experienced before!
✔️Layered Bread: This buttery, flaky bread with a croissant-like texture was also excellent.
They also sell other types of pastries like tarts and bagels, along with a diverse selection of cookies perfect for gifts, such as pistachio cookies, chocolate cookies, and butterfly puff pastries.
Fresh Dairy Products - Fun Self-Serve Experience!
Beyond the bakery, their dairy product line is truly unique, living up to the 'Bread and Milk Company' name.
The most fun part was the ✅️ self-pour fresh milk!
You pick your desired bottle size – a small one for 5.9 Yuan or a large one for 10.9 Yuan – then fill it yourself from a tap-like nozzle before heading to the checkout. It's such a cool, interactive experience!
It feels like you're pouring freshly squeezed milk, making it a fun activity for kids too!
⭐️ ✔️Fresh Milk: It definitely tastes exceptionally fresh, with a rich creaminess and a subtle sweetness at the finish. The milk bottle itself is so pretty; I wanted to keep it as a retro souvenir!
✔️ Milk Pudding: A chewy milk pudding with an incredibly intense milk flavor.
⭐️ ✔️ Rice Milk: I noticed many locals grabbing this, so I tried it. It has small rice grains that add a delightful chewiness and maximize the savory flavor! Make sure to stir it well as the particles settle at the bottom.
✔️ Lao Beijing Yogurt: This drinkable yogurt is sold everywhere in Beijing – a perfectly sweet and tangy treat. It comes in a traditional ceramic cup, which, if cleaned and kept, makes for a charming little Beijing souvenir.
They've also recently launched a Milk Ice Cream!
Cake Lineup
While I didn't get to try them myself, they offer a wide selection, from the trendy ✔️ 'collapse cake' style to small mini cakes and large whole cakes.
I used to think Chinese cakes had a long way to go to catch up with Korean standards, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and reasonable prices here.
Overall Thoughts & Beijing Travel Tips
Overall, the bread quality is high, and the interactive element of pouring your own milk adds a strong fun factor. It's easy to see why this is a local hotspot in Beijing. I'm still getting good use out of the silver insulated bag they gave me for my bread!
