Your Yeosu Adventure
Baekri Seomseom-gil
Hey there, fellow travelers!
If you're exploring Yeosu with a rental car, there's one road you absolutely can't miss: the Baekri Seomseom-gil!
We rented a car for our Yeosu trip, and let me tell you, hitting the Baekri Seomseom-gil was absolutely the best decision! It was a place I'd wanted to visit for ages, and it completely lived up to the hype.
When people think of Yeosu, popular spots like Dolsan Island or Odongdo Island often come to mind. But the Baekri Seomseom-gil offers a different kind of charm. It’s not as bustling as the famous tourist areas, and the time we spent slowly driving along the coast, soaking in the ocean views, was truly the most memorable part of our trip.
Location
📍 Baekri Seomseom-gil San 390, Jangsu-ri, Hwayang-myeon, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do
📍 Palyeongdaegyo Smart Complex Rest Area Yeongnam-myeon, Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do
If you set your navigation to Baekri Seomseom-gil (Point A), you can start at Hwayangdaegyo Bridge and follow National Road 77, enjoying the string of islands all the way.
The Baekri Seomseom-gil is a stunning coastal scenic road connecting Yeosu and Goheung. It's located on the western side of Yeosu, away from the main tourist hubs in the southeastern part or Dolsan, so many first-time visitors to Yeosu might not even know about it!
Just looking at the map, you can see how the route connects several islands, stretching all the way to Goheung.
Once the bridges marked in red on the map are completed (expected by 2028), the Baekri Seomseom-gil will extend even further, connecting directly from Dolsan-eup.
Our Yeosu trip wasn't very long, so we only drove as far as the entrance to Goheung. The round trip alone was incredibly satisfying, but if you have more time, extending your journey into Goheung to visit the Naro Space Center Observatory would make for an even more fantastic itinerary.
Overview
The name 'Baekri Seomseom-gil' means '100-ri (approximately 25 miles) of island-to-island sea road' connecting Yeosu and Goheung in Jeollanam-do.
Hwayangjobal Bridge, Dunbyeong Bridge, Nangdo Bridge, Jeokgeum Bridge, Palyeong Bridge are currently in operation (A total of 11 sea bridges are expected to connect Yeosu and Goheung by 2028).
Estimated Time
Around 1-2 hours for driving only / 3-4 hours including meals and cafes.
Important Tips
We picked up a few insights during our drive that might help you plan your trip.
First, consider the sunset timing.
While it's beautiful during the day, we imagine the sunset here would be absolutely spectacular. However, many cafes along the route tend to close around 6:00 PM. If you're hoping to catch the sunset, we highly recommend checking the operating hours of any spots you plan to visit before you set off.
Of course, you can always enjoy the sunset from your car or pull over at various viewpoints, but finding a cozy place to relax with a coffee while watching the sun dip below the horizon can be tricky.
Second, keep in mind that dining and cafe options are limited along the route.
We suggest bringing some snacks, having a meal beforehand, or planning to eat after your drive.
We had lunch in Hwayang-myeon before starting our drive, which meant we could enjoy the scenic road at our own pace without feeling rushed.
Restaurant Recommendation
Before heading into the Baekri Seomseom-gil, we grabbed lunch at Najin Gukbap Main Branch in Hwayang-myeon. Since we picked up our rental car at Yeosu Airport and headed straight for the scenic route, this stop fit perfectly into our itinerary.
We actually sought it out because it's a restaurant famously featured by Korean celebrity Sung Si-kyung... and wow, it really lives up to its reputation as a must-try spot!
Just a heads-up: the wait can be incredibly long. We arrived just before 10:00 AM and still had to wait for nearly 50 minutes! Thankfully, they had a table waiting system, which was a lifesaver on a hot day, allowing us to wait in the comfort of our car.
Starting our drive with such a hearty meal was the perfect way to kick off the adventure.
The Baekri Seomseom-gil isn't packed with countless tourist attractions to stop and explore. But for me, that was its greatest charm.
Simply driving along the coast, taking in the sea breeze, and enjoying a coffee at a scenic cafe was enough to immerse me completely in the travel spirit.
If you're renting a car in Yeosu, even a light 2-hour drive along this road is wonderful. Or, like us, make it a half-day adventure of 3-4 hours by including a meal and a cafe stop – you'll find it incredibly rewarding.
If you're looking to experience Yeosu in a unique and different way, I highly recommend taking a spin on the Baekri Seomseom-gil!😀
