When you think of Andong, popular spots like Hahoe Folk Village, Buyongdae Cliff, and Wolyeonggyo Bridge often come to mind. But on my recent trip to Andong, I ventured to a slightly different, lesser-known location.

To be honest, it wasn't a place I initially planned to visit, but after seeing it in person, I was captivated by its unexpected beauty!

I'm talking about Andong Chehwajeong Pavilion.

Chehwajeong is especially stunning in the summer when the lotus flowers are in bloom. The pavilion is surrounded by lotus flowers and crape myrtle trees, creating a scene that looks like a painting come to life.

I visited after mid-June, so I unfortunately missed the peak lotus season. However, August is the perfect time to witness both the lotus and crape myrtle at their most vibrant. If you're looking for unique places to visit in Andong, I highly recommend adding Chehwajeong to your summer itinerary for 2026.

Chehwajeong is a pavilion built during the Joseon Dynasty, historically connected to the Yi brothers, Yi Min-jeok and Yi Min-jeong of the Yean Yi clan.

The name 'Chehwa(棣華)' symbolizes harmony and friendship between brothers.

Many poets visited this place, leaving behind verses, which speaks to its significant historical value. It was also designated as a National Treasure on 12/30/2019.

So, rather than just a picturesque spot for photos, think of it as an Andong destination where you can immerse yourself in both history and nature.

While public transport is an option, I personally recommend visiting Andong Chehwajeong by private car.

However, parking directly in front of Chehwajeong can be tricky, and navigating there by GPS felt a bit confusing. My suggested method is to park at Pungsan Market (Pungsan Jangteo) and walk to Chehwajeong!

It took me about 10 minutes to walk from Pungsan Market to Chehwajeong, and there was no parking fee.

If you opt for public transportation, you can use the Pungsan Bus Stop. But if you plan to explore the surrounding area, having a car will be much more convenient.

The weather was incredibly hot during my visit. 🥵

I was a bit disappointed that the lotus flowers hadn't bloomed yet, but the pavilion, the pond, and the lush green surroundings were still beautiful enough for some fantastic photos.

Once the crape myrtle trees begin to bloom, the pavilion, pond, and flowers will create an even more breathtaking scene.

If you're eager to see the fully bloomed lotus and vibrant red crape myrtle, a mid-summer visit is highly recommended!

5 Essential Tips for Visiting Chehwajeong

Based on my own experience, here are 5 valuable tips for visiting Chehwajeong:

① Visit during daytime hours.

Since it's close to residential areas, it's best to avoid late-night visits.

② Park at Pungsan Market.

Parking directly in front of Chehwajeong is difficult, so parking at Pungsan Market and walking was the most convenient option.

③ Use restrooms beforehand.

There are no separate restrooms inside Chehwajeong. You'll need to use the public restrooms at Pungsan Market.

④ Don't visit Chehwajeong alone; make it part of a larger itinerary.

There aren't many cafes or tourist spots right around Chehwajeong, so I recommend combining it with other attractions like Andong Hahoe Folk Village or Byeongsan Seowon Confucian Academy.

⑤ For the most beautiful, painting-like scenery, visit in summer.

If you visit during the lotus and crape myrtle blooming season, you'll witness their full splendor. However, mid-summer can be very hot, so an umbrella, hat, and sunglasses are essential!

Personally, rather than making a special trip just for Chehwajeong, it's best to combine it with other Andong travel routes, such as: Andong Hahoe Folk Village → Byeongsan Seowon → Chehwajeong, or Chehwajeong → Andong Hahoe Folk Village → Byeongsan Seowon.

The viewing time, including taking photos and exploring the surroundings, was roughly 30 minutes.
