If I had to pick my absolute favorite Japanese snack, I wouldn't hesitate to choose Alfort mini chocolates. They're simply irresistible!

Today, in 2026, I'm excited to share my taste test and review of several delicious Alfort flavors.

First up is the classic, widely available flavor, often described as 'Deep Taste of Wheat and Milk'. This variety features a biscuit base, similar to a digestive cookie, topped with rich milk chocolate. If you're familiar with popular chocolate-covered biscuits, you'll know exactly what to expect!

The original flavor is pure milk chocolate bliss, offering an intense sweetness that's truly satisfying. It’s definitely one of my personal favorites. In some international markets, a pack might retail for around ~$2, but when you're in Japan, you can often snag them for as little as ~$1. That's why I always stock up when I visit!

Next, we have the Salted Vanilla flavor. I hadn't seen this one outside of Japan before, so I grabbed it without a second thought!

Each pack contains around 300 calories, which is quite substantial – think of it as roughly equivalent to a small meal!

The packaging varies slightly between flavors, and this one notably featured 'White Alfort' written on the front.

I remember the taste being a delightful vanilla chocolate with just a hint of saltiness – enough to create that perfect sweet-and-salty balance without being overpowering.

Up next is Vanilla White. This is another flavor I haven't come across often outside of Japan.

At 290 calories, it's slightly less than the Salted Vanilla, but still a pretty indulgent treat!

The inner packaging was pretty standard, nothing particularly noteworthy.

What makes this one unique is the biscuit itself – instead of the usual barley color, it's a dark, almost Oreo-like black. Despite the color difference, the biscuit's flavor seemed consistent. The chocolate, however, was a rich white chocolate, delivering a sweetness comparable to the original Alfort.

Finally, we have the exquisite Matcha Alfort. The 'Miyabi Matcha' (雅抹茶) translates to 'Elegant Matcha', and it certainly lives up to its name. As soon as I saw this one, I knew I had to get it!

This flavor came in at a hefty 320 calories, making it the most calorie-dense of the bunch!

The packaging for the Matcha flavor felt the most luxurious out of all the varieties I tried, truly reflecting its elegant name.

This was a genuinely rich matcha chocolate. It delivered both a distinct matcha flavor and a strong sweetness. If you're a fan of both matcha and sweet treats, this is an absolute must-buy snack!

My Personal Ranking

Original > Matcha > Vanilla = Salted Vanilla > Strawberry

While not reviewed here, I personally don't quite fancy the strawberry flavor. 😉
