After landing at Kansai International Airport, clearing customs, retrieving our luggage, and grabbing some cash from the ATM, we were feeling pretty hungry by 10:20 AM. We decided to make a quick stop at the legendary 551 Horai Kansai Airport branch to grab some of Osaka's most famous pork buns for the road.

Location: Kansai International Airport Terminal 1, 2nd Floor (right next to Tasty Street)
I knew the shop was on the second floor of Terminal 1, so we headed straight upstairs to the dining area. The bright red 551 sign is impossible to miss! Most travelers choose to get their buns to go. While there can be a massive queue during peak hours, we got lucky on a weekday morning and ordered almost instantly.

<The Taste Test: Butaman & Ebi Shumai>
Butaman (Pork Buns)
The bun dough is incredibly fluffy and pillowy. Even after cooling down slightly, the rich meat juices burst into your mouth. Sometimes cold pork buns can develop an overly yeasty or heavy smell, but these were perfectly balanced. The filling is beautifully seasoned with a sweet and savory glaze. The dough-to-filling ratio felt like a perfect 40:60—not too doughy, not too heavy.
Ebi Shumai (Shrimp Dumplings)
These shrimp bite-sized dumplings are absolutely spectacular, even when eaten cold! They are a must-try. Each bite has a wonderful, snappy shrimp texture with zero fishiness. They are naturally sweet and savory, making them incredibly addictive.
Palate Cleanser: Japanese Barley Tea
To wash down the rich dumplings, we grabbed an unsweetened barley tea (Mugi-cha) from a vending machine right after passing through the Rap:t train ticket gates. It is the perfect refreshing pairing!

<Our Final Thoughts on 551 Horai>
Because they are rich and savory, we recommend sharing a small pack so you don't get overwhelmed. If they feel too greasy, make sure to add a dab of the included hot mustard (karashi) to cut through the richness!
Personally, I found that the mustard paired brilliantly with the savory pork filling when squeezed directly onto the takeout box lid for dipping. The staff was incredibly friendly and fast, too! ❣️
As first-timers trying 551 Horai, we were thoroughly impressed and highly recommend making this your first food stop in Osaka.
While we grabbed ours to eat on the train, if you are traveling at a leisurely pace, we highly recommend eating them piping hot right at the terminal for the absolute best texture!
We were rushing to catch our train with heavy luggage, so we couldn't take as many photos and videos as we wanted, but the flavor certainly left a lasting impression!
Now, we are off to catch the limited express Rap:t train to Namba Station!
