Yufuin Yamadaya Ryokan 2026: The Ideal Family Onsen Stay?
Dreaming of a relaxing Yufuin onsen getaway with your family? Our 2026 review of Ryoso Yufuin Yamadaya highlights its luxurious private baths, exquisite kaiseki dining, and convenient location.
Quick answer
- Ryoso Yufuin Yamadaya is ideal for families with children or elderly parents.
- Located a 5-minute walk from Yufuin Station and 15 minutes from Lake Kinrin.
- Features four private family baths, reservable at check-in (additional tax for re-use).
- Includes kaiseki dinner and breakfast with special kid-friendly meal options.
- Peak season rates are around ~$224 per person (as of late 2026 for early 2027).

As winter approaches, my thoughts drift to warm, comforting hot springs.
If you're heading to Fukuoka, a stay at a Yufuin ryokan feels like an absolute must.
But when you start looking, ryokans with Kaiseki often come with a hefty price tag,
making the decision quite a dilemma.
Still, Yufuin is a hot spring town, and rather than going for around ~$150 per person, I decided to go all out and choose a
proper, private traditional ryokan, even if it meant paying about ~$75 more for the special trip to Yufuin.
A place with private family baths and delicious Kaiseki, prioritizing experience over just cost-effectiveness!
Today, I'll be sharing my
review of a one-night stay at Yufuin Yamadaya, a place I carefully selected after much deliberation.
I'll be sharing an honest review of its location, rooms, private family baths, and Kaiseki cuisine,
and even tips on how to visit for less than others!
1. Yufuin Ryokan Yamadaya
Ryokan Yamadaya (Ryoso Yufuin Yamadaya)

Check-in 15:00 / Check-out 10:00
Plan includes Kaiseki dinner + breakfast
Yufuin Yamadaya Ryokan is a private ryokan with 13 rooms.
There are so many ryokans in Yufuin, but I chose Yamadaya for three main reasons:
First, its proximity to the station and famous streets, all within walking distance.
Second, it's a traditional, high-end ryokan with an impressive four private family baths.
Third, many reviews praised its delicious Kaiseki and thoughtful considerations for children throughout the property.
To sum it up, I genuinely recommend it for those traveling with elderly parents or families with children.

Yufuin Station: 5 minutes on foot
Yunotsubo Street: 10 minutes on foot
Lake Kinrinko: 15 minutes on foot
African Safari: About 45 minutes by car

We went by rental car, so we parked at the ryokan and
explored every corner of Yufuin on foot.

With the station, Yunotsubo Street, and Lake Kinrinko all within walking distance,
it's one of the most convenient traditional ryokans for travelers who prefer to use the train and explore on foot.

But what's amazing is that
even with tourist attractions so close by, there's hardly any noise once you're in your room.
You can explore to your heart's content during the day, then return and enjoy immediate, peaceful rest.
It's also perfect for catching the morning mist at Lake Kinrinko.
(Our family didn't go, as we opted for another private family bath session early in the morning instead).
3. Rooms and Facilities

As soon as we stepped inside, the staff warmly greeted us and even took our luggage.

You can reserve the private family baths right at check-in,
and while your room is being prepared, you can enjoy a welcome snack in the dining area.
It was a sweet bean mochi (danpatteok), not too sweet, and absolutely delicious! 😊

We stayed in a family room on the second floor.
It was a traditional tatami room with a table, TV, and a courtyard view of a waterwheel outside the window.
It's comfortably sized for up to 5 people, but with futons laid out, 6 might feel a bit snug.

With two sinks, getting ready in the morning with my child wasn't chaotic at all.
All the amenities and a hairdryer were provided.

Inside the dresser, there were yukatas. What I found truly thoughtful was that they even had yukatas for children!
It was perfect for the whole family to enjoy a 'ryokansu' (ryokan + vacation) dressed in yukatas.
My child looked so incredibly cute in their yukata. If you visit, don't miss out on these little delightful touches!

I wondered, 'No beds? How will we sleep?' But while we were eating dinner, the staff came up and laid out thick futons for us.
When we returned after our meal, there were futons where there hadn't been any before!
My child exclaimed, "Wow~ it's a magic house!" and absolutely loved it.
They still talk about it, so it clearly made a lasting impression, haha!
Private Family Bath

There are a total of 4 family baths.

You need to reserve the family bath at check-in. We asked which one was the most popular and booked the outdoor corner bath.
We went in around 9 PM after our Kaiseki dinner.
As I soaked in the warm water and looked up,
stars were twinkling down on us...!!
It was a truly special time, just for our family.
Both my husband and child exclaimed "Wow!" and loved it,
and we couldn't bring ourselves to leave the wonderfully warm water for a long time, haha!

Tip
After using the family bath once, you can use it again by paying the hot spring tax.
So, make sure to choose your time slots wisely when booking!
Kaiseki and Breakfast

The highlight of a ryokan stay is definitely Kaiseki.
Guests staying on the second floor dine in the first-floor restaurant.
(Apparently, first-floor guests can dine in their rooms, and those rooms are slightly more expensive.)

I worried about bumping into other people, but there were partitions, so our family could enjoy our meal privately and cozily.

Each dish in the course meal was fresh and delicious.
It was also great that they provided a separate meal for my child (bacon, eggs, etc.).
Nothing beats sake with Kaiseki! My husband must have really enjoyed it.
I couldn't drink it because I'm pregnant....

Although we had to eat quickly because of our safari schedule,
the breakfast was also incredibly hearty, a Western-style meal perfectly tailored for children.
They even offered rice refills, so you don't have to worry about the portions being too small!
Public Bath
The public baths switch between male and female use based on an 8 PM schedule.
If you visit before 8 PM and again the next morning, you can experience both baths!

One spot looks straight out of a Japanese drama,

while another is completely modern. Both had such different vibes, making it fun to switch between them!
4. Yamadaya: Price for a One-Night Stay

If you're thinking a luxury ryokan in Yufuin with kaiseki dinner included would be astronomically expensive,
you might be surprised! During peak season, from December to February, prices are around ~$224 per person.
Plus, if you snag some coupons, you can save even more!
I compared prices for the same room on a Friday-Saturday in January:
(Breakfast + Dinner Included)
Yeogi Eottae | Agoda | Trip.com |
~$476 ~>$435 (with coupon applied) | ~$468 | ~$566 |
Without coupons, Agoda seems to be the cheapest,
but if you apply a first-come, first-served downloadable coupon, Yeogi Eottae becomes the most affordable!
So, don't forget to grab those coupons!
https://3ha.in/r/795004 << Here's where to find the coupons! Look for the 'International Accommodation Coupon Pack' in the middle.
The only catch is that when I checked for Friday-Saturday in January, there were only about two rooms left....
So if you're dreaming of a traditional ryokan experience in Yufuin, you'll want to book fast!

Even though Yamadaya is within walking distance of all of Yufuin's main attractions,
the rooms are wonderfully quiet, and it even boasts a private family bath and kaiseki dining.
This makes it perfect for a trip with parents, or for a private getaway with children!
If you're planning a trip to Japan and searching for the ideal ryokan,
definitely check out the prices and treat yourself to an amazing, affordable stay!
