A Guide to Booking Yu Garden Tickets

If it's your first time traveling to Shanghai, China, there's one place
you absolutely cannot miss.
It’s 'Yu Garden' (Yuyuan), where you can truly immerse yourself
in the serene, timeless beauty of a traditional Chinese garden.
Today, I’m excited to share my tips for booking Yu Garden tickets
and some highlights from my visit!
A Must-See in Shanghai: Yu Garden

Yu Garden 豫园 |
Opening Hours: Tue–Sun 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM Last Admission: 4:00 PM Closed: Mondays |
Yu Garden is one of the best spots in downtown Shanghai
to experience the authentic charm of traditional Chinese heritage.
📌 Opening hours are 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM,
but keep in mind that the last entry is strictly at 4:00 PM.
Even a quick stroll takes about an hour,
so I highly recommend getting there by 3:30 PM at the latest.
❗️ Also, it is closed every Monday, so make sure to keep this in mind
when planning your itinerary!

Yu Garden Tickets
Unfortunately, entry to Yu Garden is not free,
so you'll need to purchase a ticket.
📍 There are two ways to buy your ticket: on-site booking
and booking in advance online.
As you can see in the table below, there is no major price difference
between the two options.
On-site Booking | Advance Booking | |
Yu Garden Ticket | Apr–Jun, Sep–Nov: 40 RMB (approx. ~$6) Dec–Mar, Jul–Aug: 30 RMB | Apr–Jun, Sep–Nov: ~$6 per person |
However, if you love to plan ahead,
👉🏻 I highly recommend booking in advance.
With on-site booking, you have to wait in line to purchase,
which can eat up quite a bit of your day.
On the other hand, with online booking,
you can just scan your QR code and breeze right in—it's incredibly convenient
and saves you so much time!
And as we all know, time is precious when you're traveling!
You can book your advance tickets for Yu Garden
for your group right here!

How to Get to Yu Garden
Getting to Yu Garden is super easy
whether you take a Didi taxi or the metro.

If you're taking the metro, just hop on Line 10 or Line 14,
get off at Yuyuan Garden Station, and head out of Exit 1.

Simply follow the flow of the crowd,
and you'll find Yu Garden in no time.
Walk straight from Exit 1, and once you start seeing
the traditional buildings pictured here,
turn left and walk a bit further to reach the entrance.

After about a 10-minute walk,
you'll see the entrance to Yu Garden.
Since our visit was completely spontaneous,
we hadn't booked tickets in advance,
so we ended up waiting a bit longer than expected.

With not much time left before the last admission,
we had to rush inside, which was a little stressful.
If you want to avoid this kind of hassle,
booking your tickets beforehand will make things much smoother!
Inside Yu Garden

The moment I stepped inside Yu Garden,
I instantly understood why it's a must-visit destination.
Even though it was packed with people, you could still
fully capture the authentic vibe of a traditional Chinese garden.
Since Shanghai is otherwise filled with towering skyscrapers,
I felt a tiny bit of craving for tradition—but Yu Garden's
historic charm was absolutely breathtaking!

From arched gateways and stone formations to traditional Chinese architecture,
there are countless photo spots hidden everywhere. Be sure to
keep your camera busy and snap plenty of photos!

As you wander deeper into the garden,
you'll come across a pond just like the one in this photo.
Personally, this was my absolute favorite spot.
Sitting or standing on the rocks for a photo
is the ultimate recipe for a postcard-perfect shot!

Of course, being such a popular landmark, it gets incredibly crowded,
but Yu Garden is still 100% worth a visit
at least once in your lifetime!
Yu Garden Exterior

While the inner garden of Yu Garden is gorgeous,
you can't miss the Jiuqu Bridge (Nine-Turn Bridge) in the free public area outside!
The bridge is uniquely designed with nine sharp turns to ward off Jiangshi
(traditional Chinese hopping vampires, who can supposedly only travel in straight lines).
When you visit Yu Garden, taking a stroll across Jiuqu Bridge
near the exit and snapping some pictures
will make for a wonderful memory.

Yu Garden Night View & Street Food
Additionally, Yu Garden is a fantastic place to spend time
browsing the local street shops for souvenirs.
Since the last admission to the inner garden is at 4:00 PM (16:00),
you can only visit it during the day,
but the outer courtyard area remains open at night.
Yu Garden at night is absolutely magical and a must-see.

At night, Jiuqu Bridge lights up in vibrant, colorful hues,
creating an incredibly dreamy and surreal atmosphere.
The bridge is honestly so much more stunning at night.
If you're short on time during the day,
I highly recommend visiting at night instead.

The surrounding streets of Yu Garden are bathed in a warm red glow,
making it the perfect backdrop for photos.
Make sure to try some delicious street food for a late-night snack!
From Nanxiang soup dumplings (Xiaolongbao) and lamb skewers to Kaolengmian (grilled cold noodles),
there are so many tasty quick bites to try!
Yu Garden: A Must-Visit Spot on Your Shanghai Adventure!

If this is your very first time visiting Shanghai,
I highly, highly recommend checking out Yu Garden (Yuyuan)!
Just keep in mind that the last entry is at 4:00 PM (16:00).
To make things super smooth, I definitely suggest
booking your tickets in advance online!
That way, you can scan your QR code and breeze right on in.
It's a massive time-saver, especially during peak travel seasons.
I hope you have an amazing time exploring Yu Garden,
snap some postcard-perfect photos, and have an unforgettable trip to Shanghai!
