Last July, I took a trip to Shanghai, China.

While we were at Yu Garden (Yuyuan), we just had to try the famous "Wanghong" (Chinese influencer) makeover experience.

So, let's dive into my hilarious review of dressing up in Hanfu, getting full-on makeup, and wandering around the city!

Just a quick heads-up: we were traveling in a group of three married couples, so yes, the husbands wore Hanfu too! Also, it was a slightly rainy day~~~

With 3 women and 3 men, we decided to book a package that included Hanfu fitting & makeup at 4:00 PM, followed by a photoshoot at 7:00 PM! They told us this is the perfect timeline if you want to capture that beautiful night-view vibe.

Time to become a Wanghong! 🫡

This is "Zhujianmo" (竹简墨), the absolute go-to place for the Wanghong experience in Shanghai!

Honestly, I was a bit worried we'd be the oldest ones there (our average age was late 30s, haha!), but there was actually a really wide range of ages trying out the experience. Whew, what a relief! 🫠

Everyone here is so incredibly skilled...

Their hair and makeup skills are no joke, and they kept showering us with compliments the whole time, so I was already 100% satisfied, lol! The general manager was also super efficient and got things done with major boss energy. 👍🏻

When you first arrive at Zhujianmo,

They ask: "Did you think of a style you want to wear? Show us some photos!"

Once you show them the general colors or vibes you like, they head straight to the Hanfu room and pick out the perfect outfits for you!

There was an incredibly wide variety of styles, colors, and designs to choose from!~~~

Since we're in China, I had to go with classic red, right? 🇨🇳

I ended up just going with the second option they brought me, haha!

Since there were six of us, I figured the manager was already super busy and might get annoyed if I asked to change again, lol! It looked way better than the first one anyway, so I just said, "Let's go with this!"

Now that we're dressed in Hanfu, off to the Wanghong makeup room!

One hair stylist, one makeup artist—

I had a dedicated team of two people working on me! Haha, I already felt like a true Wanghong. ^^

You can choose between a "glam" or "subtle" look,

but when else would I ever get a makeover like this? So, I went full-on glam! ✨

It felt like they used every single makeup product in the shop and loaded up on all the hair accessories. It was pure, unadulterated glamour...

When it comes to making unforgettable memories during a trip to Shanghai, nothing beats the Wanghong experience! Haha!

Ready to take over Yu Garden! 🩵 It was so funny because all of our styles were completely different, lol.

What's amazing is that they styled each of us perfectly to match our individual vibes and personalities ❤️

After finishing up our Hanfu makeup at Zhuganmo, we had some free time before our photo shoot. So, we wandered around Yu Garden on our own... and we were literally the only ones walking around dressed like this, haha! Surprisingly, there weren't many people doing the 'Wanghong' (influencer) experience at this hour. Maybe everyone does it at night?;;

We ran into some Korean ladies who incredibly offered to take photos of us first—and they created an absolute masterpiece 🫡 Thank you so much!!! I could tell they had a major photographer vibe, and they were indeed true pros~~~

Exploring Yu Garden while getting the full Wanghong treatment~~~ I highly recommend Zhuganmo as a must-do on your Shanghai travel itinerary! haha.

By this point, all the embarrassment was completely gone, haha. Thanks to my crew for readily agreeing to this Wanghong experience with me,,

We even went into a restaurant to eat like this, lol. It felt like a mission: "Get full Hanfu makeup, then eat dumplings"

Once it was finally time for our official photo shoot reservation, we headed to the prime photo spots in Yu Garden with our photographer!

What a relief that the photographer coached us through all the poses!!!

The guys really should have gotten their hair and makeup done too, lol!

The shoot lasted for about an hour. The photographer was so professional and managed to navigate the spots so we stayed as dry as possible even though it was raining, so keep that in mind!

And that wraps up our Shanghai Wanghong experience after all three couples finished their photo shoots, haha!

If you want a Shanghai trip that's far from ordinary, you absolutely have to try Hanfu makeup!!!
