Taipei City Guide: The Perfect Half-Day
In this guide, I'll walk you through navigating from Ximending to Yongkang Street, share my honest review of the original Din Tai Fung, introduce you to an unforgettable "Fruit Coffee," and give you insider tips on scoring L'Atelier Lotus nougat crackers.
1. Getting to Yongkang Street & EasyCard Tips
💳 The Essential EasyCard

The EasyCard is your absolute lifeline when exploring Taipei.
Functioning much like London's Oyster card, it grants you seamless access to public transit
and can even be used to pay at convenience stores and select shops.
If you want a cute, themed design, you can pick one up at any local convenience store.
Personally, I prioritized convenience over aesthetics, so I pre-ordered mine online
and picked it up right at the airport. (Hence the rather plain look... ^^)
✔️ How to Recharge
Simply use the ticketing machines inside any MRT station (like Ximen).
Insert your cash, place your card on the sensor, and you're fully loaded!

🚇 Directions to Yongkang Street
Take the MRT to Dongmen Station and take Exit 5—you'll step right into the heart of Yongkang Street.
If you're coming from Ximen Station, just transfer to the Red Line (it's super intuitive).
From Taipei Main Station, the Red Line takes you there directly with zero transfers!
Din Tai Fung Original Branch
The undisputed champion of soup dumplings!

You can't visit Taipei without a pilgrimage to where the Din Tai Fung empire began.
During my first trip, I breezed right in without a wait
(pro-tip: I had pre-purchased a meal voucher online).
This time in 2026, I decided to wing it, and my timing was definitely off—
the wait time was over an hour! ㅠㅠ...
Fortunately, you don't have to stand in line. They give you a queue number
and an estimated wait time, leaving you free to explore the neighborhood.

Honest review after waiting 1+ hours:
The Xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) are absolute perfection!!!!
While the prices are steeper than local mom-and-pop shops, the impeccable service and spotless environment make it worthwhile.
Even on my second visit, it completely lived up to the hype.
That said, if you're traveling with a ravenous appetite, the wait might test your patience.
Plan your timing carefully!
Next time I visit, I'll definitely be buying a fast-track meal voucher online again.

This spot wasn't on my original itinerary, but it turned out to be the best coffee of my trip!
Tucked away in a quiet alleyway just a stone's throw from Din Tai Fung,
it's a cozy, aesthetic cafe bursting with local charm.

While there is indoor seating, I highly recommend grabbing a spot on the terrace!
Isn't it gorgeously styled?
The weather was around a perfect 75°F that day, and simply sitting out there was pure bliss.

I initially stopped by just for the aesthetics, so I didn't have high expectations for the drinks.
But their Signature Fruit Coffee is out of this world ♥
It's a rare flavor profile that you won't easily find elsewhere.
They blend fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice directly into the coffee.
The marriage of tart citrus and rich roasted beans sounds unusual, but it works so flawlessly
that I still find myself craving it.
If you need a caffeine fix on Yongkang Street, I cannot recommend this enough!
Yongkang Park
📍 Yongkang Park
Yongkang St, Da’an District, Taipei City, Taiwan 106
Just a short stroll from the cafe, you'll stumble upon Yongkang Park.
It's a charming neighborhood green space filled with playing children and local elders relaxing.
It feels wonderfully authentic, a world away from the busy tourist traps.

With its peaceful vibe and plenty of benches,
it's the ideal spot to kill time while waiting for your Din Tai Fung table, or to digest after a big meal.
L'Atelier Lotus (Nougat Crackers)

Always double-check holiday hours before visiting!
Did you know Yongkang Street is the epicenter of Taipei's famous nougat crackers?!
They're beautifully packaged and dangerously delicious, making them the ultimate souvenir.

Have you ever seen a snack shop this stunning?!!!!
I honestly thought it was a high-end bakery.
Since I arrived in the late afternoon, I was worried they'd be completely sold out,
but thankfully, they still had a few boxes left!
I picked up a box of the original nougat crackers,
plus a few individually wrapped ones to munch on right away.
My biggest regret of the trip? Not buying ten more boxes....
A common issue with nougat is that it stubbornly sticks to your teeth,
but L'Atelier's nougat bites cleanly and melts away perfectly!
The filling is wonderfully rich without being overly sweet—I could easily eat a dozen in one sitting ㅠㅠ!

While you're in the area, don't miss out on other iconic spots like Tian Jin Onion Pancake,
the legendary mango shaved ice at Smoothie House,
and the quirky souvenir shop, Mama Umbrella!
