Yataro Udon Fukuoka Review 2026: Authentic 24/7 Local Spot

During my recent trip to Fukuoka, I was on the hunt for an early-bird breakfast spot. Lo and behold, just a 5-minute walk from my accommodation, I stumbled upon a true local institution: Yataro Udon.

As a self-proclaimed udon enthusiast, and knowing Fukuoka's reputation for incredible udon, my expectations were high. Let me share my experience at this beloved, old-school udon shop!

It's crucial to remember that Yataro Udon only accepts cash, so make sure you have some Japanese Yen on hand before you visit!

Yataro Udon is conveniently located just about a 3-minute walk from Tenjin-Minami Station.

The fact that it's generally open 24/7 was a huge plus, meaning you can satisfy your udon cravings without worrying about time, whether it's for an early breakfast or a late-night snack.

Inside, Yataro Udon boasts a classic, narrow layout dominated by counter seating.

The open kitchen allowed us to watch the chefs at work, and despite being a 60-year-old establishment, the kitchen was remarkably spotless.

We arrived around 7:30 AM and even at that early hour, there was a good number of patrons. It definitely felt more like a beloved neighborhood spot for locals rather than a tourist trap.

Behind the counter, there were also two 4-person tables, making it an option for small groups or families, even though the space isn't huge.

Each table was equipped with chopsticks, spoons, shichimi (Japanese seven-spice blend), and soy sauce. Water was self-serve, a common practice in many Japanese eateries.

Given the distinctly local vibe, I wasn't expecting an English menu, but to my pleasant surprise, they had one, which made ordering a breeze!

The main offerings are udon, with a wide variety of options from classic plain udon to shrimp tempura, burdock root tempura (goboten), meat, and fried tofu (aburaage). You can also order soba noodles.

Prices are incredibly reasonable, starting from approximately $3 (430 JPY) for a basic udon bowl, with most specialty bowls ranging from about $4 to $6 (600-800 JPY). You can also add extra toppings to customize your meal.

Beyond udon, Yataro also offers oden (Japanese hot pot stew), with most items costing around ~$1 (160 JPY).

They were kept warm at the counter, making them a perfect late-night snack to enjoy with a drink.

If udon alone isn't enough, you can also grab some inari sushi (fried tofu pouches filled with rice) or onigiri (rice balls) to round out your meal.

I opted for the Goboten Udon (burdock root tempura udon), priced at about $4 (600 JPY).

I'd enjoyed goboten at another udon spot, Daichi no Udon, previously, so I was keen to try it here. And let me tell you, after a night out, that warm broth was the perfect remedy!

The noodles had a delightful chewiness, and the broth, while a bit on the saltier side on its own, balanced perfectly when slurped with the noodles.

It wasn't an overpowering seafood punch but rather a subtle, comforting flavor that made it easy to finish the whole bowl.

My partner ordered the Shrimp Tempura Udon, also around $4 (600 JPY).

We found that the base noodles and broth were the same, with the only difference being the topping.

Interestingly, the shrimp tempura wasn't whole shrimp but rather a unique fritter made with small dried shrimp. As it soaked into the broth, it added a rich, savory shrimp flavor that he really enjoyed.

Overall, if I were judging purely on taste, Daichi no Udon near Hakata Station still slightly edges out Yataro Udon for my personal preference.

However, Yataro Udon truly shines with its authentic, old-school ambiance, incredibly affordable prices, and the sheer convenience of its 24-hour operation.

It's less about being an extraordinary gourmet udon spot and more about being a reliable, comforting place for an early morning hangover cure or a relaxed late-night bite with some oden and a drink.

If you're staying near Tenjin-Minami and looking for a no-fuss breakfast or a delicious late-night snack, Yataro Udon is definitely worth checking out.
