When planning a trip to Fukuoka, shopping at Don Quijote or local drugstores is always on the itinerary.
But for many travelers, hunting down some great Japanese whiskey, sake, or local beers is an absolute must.
During my recent trip, I visited Yamaya Daimyo, a conveniently located liquor shop right in the heart of the Tenjin and Daimyo shopping districts.

Location & Access

With its bright red storefront, Yamaya Daimyo is incredibly easy to spot even from a distance, making it perfect for first-time visitors.
It's a great spot to drop by while shopping around Tenjin during the day, or to grab some local beers and canned drinks before heading back to your hotel after a long day of sightseeing.
The Store Layout

The interior is surprisingly spacious and well-organized, neatly divided into sections for whiskey, sake, shochu, wine, beer, and liqueurs.
I initially planned to just grab a few quick items and head out, but they had such an extensive selection of familiar brands that I ended up staying much longer just comparing prices and options.
Whiskey Selection & Prices

Popular gift choices immediately caught my eye, with highly sought-after bottles priced reasonably: The Glenlivet 18-Year for 9,800 JPY (~$63), Royal Salute 21-Year for 14,000 JPY (~$90), and Johnnie Walker Blue Label for 18,000 JPY (~$116).

Over in the Macallan section, they had everything from the classic 18-Year to the Harmony Collection, Rare Cask, and A Night on Earth series beautifully lined up.
The Jameson lineup was also impressive, featuring not just the standard bottle but also Black Barrel, Triple Triple, Stout Edition, and IPA Edition.

During my visit, both the Glenfiddich 12-Year and Glenlivet 12-Year were running on special discount promotions.

The Japanese whiskey section featured several regional craft bottles with staff recommendation tags.
While they had diverse labels like Fujisan, Cosmo, and Sabu, highly coveted bottles like Yamazaki or Hibiki—which are incredibly popular among tourists—were unfortunately nowhere to be found.

Suntory Kakubin and Suntory Old are staples that almost every traveler picks up when visiting Japan.
Kakubin is globally famous for making the perfect highball, making it a fantastic, budget-friendly Japanese whiskey to bring home!
Shochu & Sake Selection

The Shochu section was packed with Kyushu's signature sweet potato shochu (imo-shochu), including popular brands like Tominohozan, Kitchohozan, and Satsumamusou.

Being in Kyushu, the sweet potato shochu variety was incredibly impressive, with labels highlighting different production methods like black koji (kuro-koji) and white koji (shiro-koji).
Most bottles were priced in the low-to-mid 1,000 JPY range (~$6 to $10), making them highly accessible for beginners or as unique gifts.

In the sake corner, internationally recognized names like Kubota Manju and Hakkaisan stood out.
They also featured popularity ranking tags on several bottles, making it extremely easy for sake novices to pick a winner.
Beer & Canned Drinks

If you love light, refreshing canned drinks like Horoyoi or Hyoketsu, you'll be thrilled by the massive, colorful wall of options here.

The beer section brought together Japan's major heavyweights—Kirin, Asahi, Suntory, Sapporo, and Yebisu. They even carried some limited-edition seasonal Kinmugi cans that you rarely spot in standard supermarkets.
If you want to stock up on drinks to enjoy back at your hotel room, this section is an absolute paradise.
Yamaya Daimyo is less about hunting down ultra-rare collector bottles and more about purchasing familiar spirits, local craft options, and everyday beers at highly competitive, tax-free prices right in the center of Tenjin.
I highly recommend it if you're staying near Tenjin or Daimyo, want to stock up on hotel-room drinks, or are looking to browse reliable favorites like Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, or Jameson.
On the other hand, if your main goal is to hunt down rare Japanese whiskies like Yamazaki or Hibiki, you'll definitely want to cross-shop other specialized boutique liquor stores in the city.
