Dogo Onsen Yamatoya Honten
Highly Recommended for a Private, Authentic Japanese Hot Spring Stay

Hey there, fellow travelers!
Today, I'm thrilled to share my review of a stay that truly exceeded expectations in Matsuyama: the incredible
Dogo Onsen Yamatoya Honten.
Matsuyama is famous for its hot springs and delicious tangerines, so I highly recommend dedicating at least one night to a traditional onsen accommodation.
I intentionally sought out a place beyond the super-popular Dogo Onsen, and this gem offered all the authentic ryokan charm without the overwhelming crowds. My travel buddy couldn't stop raving about it!
Let's dive into the pricing and a detailed hot spring experience!

1. Matsuyama Accommodation
Matsuyama is renowned for its natural hot springs, which are neither heated nor diluted. They boast an incredible 3,000-year history!
Among these, Dogo Onsen is the most famous, often bustling with visitors, and some accommodations even offer complimentary admission tickets.

While it's undeniably a great hot spring, the sheer number of people and the high cost of staying there as an accommodation made me hesitant. I thought, "Is it really worth it?"
So, I decided on my Matsuyama accommodation based on these key criteria:
✔️ Hot spring accommodation + Yukata provided + proximity to shopping streets
The Botchan Karakuri Clock is near Dogo Onsen, and this area is also close to shopping streets and great restaurants, so staying nearby means less walking!
2. Dogo Onsen Yamatoya Honten

When deciding on a hot spring accommodation for our one-night stay, I wanted the absolute best onsen experience, so I meticulously read reviews.
I chose this hotel based on consistent praise for its beautiful rooms and facilities, as well as the friendly staff!

The hotel's location was universally praised 👍🏻, and it was simply perfect as a traditional ryokan-style accommodation.

Agoda was the most affordable, and with free cancellation within the period, it's a good idea to book in advance if you're still deciding.
Why? Because Yamatoya Honten is a popular accommodation, and weekend bookings can sell out one to two months in advance!
If you find availability, book it! Booking early also typically gets you the best price ദ്ദി・ᴗ・)
3. Japanese-Style Rooms

We stayed in a Japanese-style room!
The traditional tatami room exuded authentic Japanese charm, and we enjoyed the futon setup service.
There was also a lovely window seat, almost like a small balcony, which was perfect for photos or simply gazing out at the view – absolutely beautiful!🥹

The bathroom featured a separate shower area and vanity, and the amenities provided were clean and convenient.
As a ryokan, they also provide yukata and tabi socks, so you can wear them not just in your room or to the onsen, but even when exploring the nearby shopping streets! .ᐟ.ᐟ

Baskets are also available on the first floor, perfect for carrying your essentials while you take photos in front of Dogo Onsen or explore the Botchan Clock area in your yukata. How fun! ㅎㅎㅎ

Since the Botchan Karakuri Clock and Dogo Onsen are both just a 5-minute walk away,
wearing your yukata while strolling around the immediate area doesn't feel out of place at all. In fact, the yukata with the decorative obi sash provided here was much prettier than those from other accommodations!ㅎㅎㅎ
4. The Onsen Experience

As a traditional ryokan, Yamatoya Honten naturally offers amazing hot springs to soak in, but it also has a complimentary sake & snack bar!
It's the perfect spot to enjoy some sake or a drink right after your shower.

The onsen area itself has clean shower facilities and hair dryers, so it's actually more convenient to wash up down there than in your room – definitely a win-win! ㅎㅎ
And the best part? There's no limit to how many times you can use the onsen! I personally enjoyed the hot springs four times during my one-night stay, haha! ദ്ദി,,-`_´-)
Honestly, extending our stay would have been too pricey, but I highly recommend booking an onsen accommodation for at least one night to truly make the most of your hot spring experience!
🖤Overall Thoughts
Dogo Onsen Yamatoya Honten is a tranquil ryokan located incredibly close to Dogo Onsen, offering a fantastic hot spring experience.
The water is pristine, and the interior facilities perfectly capture the authentic Japanese tatami room ambiance. I highly recommend it for a one-night stay!
Having traveled all the way to Matsuyama, I would have genuinely regretted missing out on this experience 😭
