REF Matsuyama by Vessel: New Dogo Onsen Family Stay 2026
Planning a family hot spring getaway to Matsuyama? Discover REF Matsuyama City Station by Vessel, a modern hotel with sparkling clean public baths.
As autumn's cool breeze gives way to the approaching winter,
one of the first places that comes to mind for a
warm hot spring getaway is
Japan's oldest hot spring town,
Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture.

Whether you're planning a family trip with parents or children,
or a romantic escape with your partner, choosing accommodation
often brings up a common concern:
A hot spring and a public bath are must-haves,
but what if the facilities are too old?

Traditional ryokans near Dogo Onsen's main building certainly
have a charming, old-world elegance, but their rooms and
bath facilities are often quite aged,
and even some budget-friendly hotels in the bustling Okaido shopping arcade
show their age, making those sensitive to hygiene and cleanliness
naturally hesitant.
For those who prioritize hygiene and cleanliness above all else,
I wholeheartedly recommend this hotel with its brand-new public bath facilities:
REF Matsuyama City Station by Vessel Hotels

I'll give you a clear breakdown of my personal stay, its pros and cons,
and even some smart booking tips!
1. Location & Transportation: Just a 30-second dash from the airport limousine stop!
Accommodation in Matsuyama city is broadly divided into two areas:
Matsuyama City Station and Okaido.
While both have their distinct advantages and disadvantages,
considering airport transfers, luggage storage, and tram boarding convenience,
the Matsuyama City Station area felt much more practical.

✔️ Unbeatable Accessibility
When you take the limousine bus from Matsuyama Airport,
you'll arrive right at the Matsuyama City Station stop, literally steps from the hotel.
No need to drag heavy luggage across bumpy sidewalks;
you can walk straight into the lobby in just 30 seconds.

✔️ Shopping & Sightseeing Hub
Right next door, you'll find the large IYOTETSU Takashimaya Department Store,
the Kururin Ferris wheel, Gintengai shopping street, Starbucks,
Botchan Train Museum, and convenience stores,
allowing you to easily handle dining and shopping all at once.
We even grabbed late-night snacks at the convenience store
and picked up breakfast from Doutor Coffee instead of the hotel's breakfast the next day.

TIP❗
Since this station serves as both the starting and ending point for the tram,
there's a hidden benefit: you can always find a seat and start your tram journey
towards Dogo Onsen comfortably.
I paid a total of ~ $296 for two rooms for two adults on a weekday.
Here are the current peak season prices:

2. Spotless Room Condition: A Masterclass in Space Utilization
You're probably familiar with the typically compact rooms of Japanese business hotels.
The room I stayed in was a Standard Twin Room, approximately 22㎡.

Clever Under-Bed Storage
The open space under the bed frame meant I could easily slide in and tuck away my 28-inch large suitcase, even fully open!
Tucking my luggage away freed up floor space, which was fantastic for usability! Plus, seeing how impeccably clean even the easily-forgotten corners were gave me such peace of mind.

Smart Space Division
The clever design meant you left your outdoor shoes at the entrance and slipped into fresh indoor slippers, keeping the room wonderfully clean!

With the vanity conveniently located outside the main bathroom, getting ready in the morning was a breeze, even for two people!
The room even had a shower and a bathtub, though I didn't end up using the tub since the amazing public bath was just downstairs!

Having the sink outside and the toilet/shower area separate truly makes a difference in convenience.
Effortless Charging!

Being a brand-new facility, it truly shined with ample USB ports thoughtfully placed on the headboard and various tables. No need to dig out that 110V adapter!

Not only an air purifier but also a multi-charger are provided as standard amenities.

And of course, comfortable pajamas are provided – such a lifesaver! Especially with bulky winter clothes, skipping pajamas in your luggage makes packing so much lighter and easier, right?

3. My Absolute Favorite Feature!
The Sauna & State-of-the-Art Grand Bath!
The very reason I chose this particular spot among Matsuyama's many accommodations!
Right, it was all because of the incredible guest-exclusive Grand Bath on the 3rd floor.
Forget those worries about the musty smell or worn-out grout you sometimes find in older hot spring hotels! This place boasted a modern, stylish interior and a wonderfully clean, up-to-date management system.

Fully Equipped: Wet & Dry Saunas!
After a day of exploring in the crisp autumn air, my body was happily tired and my belly full from dinner.

Once you return to your room,
immerse yourself in a wonderfully warm bath and treat yourself to the sauna—
all your travel fatigue will simply melt away like snow.
In the powder room, there was a Dyson hairdryer.
It's quite different from those weak hairdryers you often find in older ryokans, isn't it?
4. Free Lounge Drinks and Mandarin Orange Ice Cream
The signature services of the Vessel Hotel chain
are, of course, available here too.

Welcome Drink Bar & Ice Cream
From 2 PM to 11 PM,
you can freely enjoy coffee, tea, and various drinks
for free in the lobby lounge.

Especially, the mandarin orange ice cream, a specialty of Ehime Prefecture,
can be enjoyed from 7 PM to 9 PM.
You absolutely *must* try it!

Manga Lounge and Other Facilities

The relaxation area opposite the public bath is perfectly equipped with a manga corner,
a microwave, an ice machine, and even a coin laundry.

Since I don't know Japanese, the manga books are just eye candy for me.
5. Essential Tips for Family Travelers!
The Vessel Hotel chain has a fantastic policy:
if children 18 years old or younger share a bed with their parents or grandparents,
their stay is absolutely free!

Unlike typical business hotels where children are usually counted as part of the occupancy,
this makes it the best value accommodation for family trips to Japan with kids.
Dad + Mom + 2 Kids = Just pay for 2 adults!
6. Pros and Cons
Highly recommended for those who:

🔸 Are clean-freaks who prefer new facilities and are concerned about the hygiene of older ryokans or aging hotels.
🔸 Travelers who need short luggage transit times, right in front of the limousine bus stop.
🔸 Hot spring enthusiasts who want to relax and rejuvenate in the sauna and public bath every night.
🔸 Those planning a high-value family trip with children 18 years old or younger.

Important things to check before booking
🔸 Okaiido and Matsuyama Castle are a 15-minute walk away.
Getting to Ookaido shopping street, the main bustling area, or the Matsuyama Castle Ropeway station takes about 15 minutes on foot.

However, Matsuyama city center shops tend to close early after 7-8 PM,
but during the day, it's only 2-3 stops by tram right in front of the hotel,
so you can get there quickly. It's not a major inconvenience, and kids usually love riding the tram!

🔸Daily Bus Tour Meeting Point
If you've booked a day tour to the charming small towns,
you'll need to head to the meeting point near Okaido, right in front of Mitsukoshi Department Store,
a little early in the morning.

If I were to visit this place again?
While Candeo Hotel also boasts great accessibility,
comparing the two hotels,
I'd probably choose Vessel Hotel for its modern facilities, cleanliness, and the exclusive
lounge benefits for guests.
During the chilly autumn and winter seasons,
Matsuyama, home to the famous Dogo Onsen,
sees weekend rooms book up quite quickly.
I really wanted to stay here for two nights, but since it was fully booked,
I regrettably only managed to stay for one.

I'll share the best price sites with you below.
