Recently, many travelers seem to be opting for trips to China and Japan instead of Southeast Asia. Official news reports have indicated a decline in Southeast Asia's popularity, citing flight times of five hours or more and rising costs that have made it less of a budget-friendly destination. I personally experienced this during a two-month trip through Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand, where I was surprised by how much more I spent than my initial budget.

Among Japan's many destinations, I want to introduce you to Matsuyama, a charming small city that's easy to navigate and offers a diverse range of attractions.

One of Matsuyama's best features is its free shuttle bus service connecting the airport to the city center and vice versa. Japan has been offering this special perk for over two years to boost tourism in smaller cities. Without this shuttle, transportation costs and time would certainly add up, making this a fantastic benefit for travelers.

What's more, at the airport information desk, you can often receive free admission tickets to major attractions like Matsuyama Castle and the Dogo Onsen Annex. While the Dogo Onsen Annex is much smaller than the main building, getting free entry by showing your passport and a coupon is a great deal. Taking advantage of these small benefits can easily save you over $30!
Direct Flights by Departure Airport

From Seoul-Incheon, Jeju Air operates daily flights, with a short flight time of only 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Travelers departing from Busan have even more options with Air Busan and Asiana Airlines, making it easy to find flights that fit your desired travel dates. From Cheongju, Aero K currently operates, but starting on 01/02/2027, it will switch to a regular schedule of three times a week: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
Fares and Booking Timing

For November 2026, round-trip flights typically cost around ~$225 on weekdays. If your trip includes a weekend, expect to pay between ~$300 and ~$375. Prices might be slightly higher during the cherry blossom season in April or when hot spring demand peaks from December to February, but November offers quite reasonable fares.

Dogo Onsen Honkan

Dogo Onsen Honkan is a three-story wooden public bathhouse built in 1894. After approximately six years of preservation and renovation work, it fully reopened in 2026.
Known as a motif for the bathhouse in the animated film *Spirited Away*, it's common to see many people strolling around in yukata (traditional Japanese robes) as the sun sets. The area from the main building to Dogo Onsen Station is lined with various shops, making it a great place to explore.

I personally used the Dogo Onsen Annex with the free coupon I received at the airport. However, I wouldn't recommend the Annex because its scale was much smaller than I expected, and its 'open-air bath' area was barely worthy of the name, which was quite disappointing. It's definitely worth paying the entrance fee to enjoy the authentic onsen experience at the Honkan instead.
Matsuyama Castle Tenshu (Main Keep)

From Dogo Onsen, you can take a tram back towards Okaido to visit Matsuyama Castle.
Matsuyama Castle, built by Kato Yoshiaki in 1602, is one of Japan's twelve remaining original castle keeps. If you go about 30 minutes before sunset, you'll be treated to a beautiful night view. I believe Dogo Onsen and Matsuyama Castle are enough to make your trip worthwhile. The rest of your itinerary can be dedicated to enjoying the local food and atmosphere!
Shopping & Dining

Even though Okaido is a smaller city, it boasts a surprising number of excellent restaurants offering delicious dishes like sea bream rice, sushi, ramen, and izakaya fare. There's even a Don Quijote, so you can easily fill a 2-night, 3-day trip with shopping and culinary adventures.

I've introduced you to some must-visit spots in Matsuyama and how to book your flights. If you're planning a trip in November 2026, the weather is perfect for outdoor activities, with temperatures averaging around 59°F (15°C). The flight time is short, and the current Japanese Yen exchange rate is quite favorable, making it a budget-friendly option.
