My mid-summer adventure in Fukuoka this time!
I was really craving some delicious grilled meat and a cold beer.
Having already visited most of the famous Yakiniku spots,
this time I was on the hunt for a hidden gem in Tenjin I hadn't tried yet.
That's how I stumbled upon Yakiniku Tetsuya,
conveniently located near Ohori Park and Daimyo shopping street.
Knowing that Kumamoto is renowned for its beef production in Japan,
I was intrigued by reviews mentioning they serve Kumamoto Akauchi beef,
so I decided to check it out myself.

Operating Hours

Reservations recommended / Tabelog rating 3.54
Since it's a popular spot for locals, especially for company dinners,
I heard there could be a wait,
so I made a reservation in advance.
Its location near Tenjin also means great accessibility to other tourist attractions.

The restaurant occupies both the first and second floors,
making the interior feel more spacious than it appears from the outside.
Although I arrived about 10 minutes past my reservation time due to traffic,
the staff were incredibly kind and accommodating, which I really appreciated.

The first floor features counter seating surrounding the kitchen,
while the second floor is dedicated to table seating.
There were quite a few solo diners on the first floor,
and with the separate floors, the restaurant's atmosphere was also pleasantly quiet,
which I really enjoyed.

When enjoying Yakiniku, getting the smell on your clothes can be a concern,
but thankfully, they had separate lockers for personal belongings and coats.

Since I had a reservation, our table was already perfectly set upon arrival.
You can scan a QR code to view the menu, which even has a Korean translation.

They had a great value 5,000 yen menu that included 20 types of meat and 'Nomihodai' (all-you-can-drink),
but unfortunately, due to our next schedule,
we opted for the Tetsuya A Set instead.

They offer a wide range of options, from sets and à la carte dishes to full courses,
and besides alcoholic beverages, there's also a great variety of non-alcoholic drinks,
making it perfect even if you're dining with friends who don't drink.

The Tetsuya A Set I ordered
is 1,800 yen per person,
and ordering for two people resulted in a surprisingly generous portion.
In Korean terms, this set would be around ~$23...!
Among Fukuoka's Yakiniku restaurants,
the price point isn't too high,
and the meat quality is excellent, making for supreme satisfaction! 👍

As a side note, I tend to get hot easily and experience facial flushing,
so whenever I go to a Yakiniku place in Japan, I always bring a portable fan because of the grill heat.
But here, they had the air conditioning blasting,
It was cool even without a handheld fan.

I just can't have meat without some veggies,
so I ordered Tetsuya's special salad and some napa cabbage kimchi too.

The special salad was served in a unique cube shape,
which made it quite an unusual salad.
It felt like lettuce and seaweed agar had been solidified together?!
Surprisingly, it really paired well with the meat.

The kimchi was unexpectedly delicious, so I just had to order some rice too 🐽
You all know the magic of white rice, meat, and kimchi together, right?

I usually don't tend to eat Japanese yakiniku sauces much because they can be quite salty,
but Tetsuya's sauce wasn't salty at all,
and with garlic in it, it was absolutely delicious.
I even wondered if the chef might be Korean, that's how perfect it was!
Both the sauce seasoning and the kimchi hit all the right notes for my palate!

And of course, beer 🍻, the indispensable companion to delicious grilled meat, also
made its way to our table!

The meat we had from the set was so delicious that
I truly felt that Fukuoka's famous yakiniku spots are on another level,
so I decided to slightly postpone our next plans
and ordered some more cuts of meat to try.
We added premium short ribs (1,500 yen) and beef tongue to our order.

The beef tongue came out thickly sliced,
and it was incredibly flavorful, completely free of any gamey smell.
The premium short ribs also boasted excellent quality, leaving us thoroughly satisfied.
It was my first time trying Kumamoto Akaushi, and it was absolutely divine 👍

We wrapped up our meal with Morioka Reimen!
Korean-style cold noodles (naengmyeon) served in Japan
can often struggle to replicate the exact authentic Korean flavor,
and often doesn't quite hit the spot for me.
However, Tetsuya's version was Japanese-style Reimen, which surprisingly,
made it even more delicious.

Not a single grain of rice left behind – we completely cleared our plates!

Before we left, I made a quick stop at the restroom.
Inside, they thoughtfully provided mouthwash and toothpicks,
and a bottle of Febreze was available to freshen up before heading out.
If you're looking for a Tenjin restaurant that's easy to visit without a fuss,
and serves up truly satisfying meat quality,
then for your next Fukuoka yakiniku adventure,
definitely consider checking out Yakiniku Tetsuya!
