Wukang Road & Anfu Road
Must-Visit Spots in Shanghai

Hello everyone!
I'm NihaoLiliLee, your Greater China travel blogger! 😆
After traveling to Shanghai multiple times,
you start discovering places
you'll visit as often as the Bund or Nanjing Road East.
For me, that place was definitely Wukang Road (武康路).
It's a street where you can truly soak in the unique atmosphere of Shanghai's French Concession,
and with its collection of beautiful buildings,
it's perfect for a leisurely stroll.
Especially around Wukang Mansion, the vibe changes completely between day and night,
so I personally recommend visiting both during the day and again in the evening.
In this post, I'll be sharing a review of Wukang Mansion, Wukang Road's iconic landmark,
along with Sichuan Citizen, a restaurant I visited,
and the popular cafe, 13 de Marzo! 😆
What you'll find in this post ✔️ Wukang Mansion: Day vs. Night Comparison ✔️ Wukang Road Restaurant: Sichuan Citizen ✔️ Wukang Road Cafe: 13 de Marzo |
Wukang Mansion: Day vs. Night Comparison
Wukang Mansion (武康大楼) is the landmark that represents Wukang Road.
Built in 1924, this French Renaissance-style building,
with its unique ship-like exterior,
has become one of Shanghai's most famous buildings.
The first time you see Wukang Mansion, it's exactly like the pictures,
and it just feels so welcoming! 😆
During the day, the red brick building and plane trees complement each other beautifully.
Especially if you visit on a sunny day,
it feels like you've stepped into a charming European alley.

For Wukang Mansion during the day,
I highly recommend visiting on a day with good weather.
Wukang Mansion, set against the blue sky and clouds,
looks absolutely stunning! ❣️
Of course, it's also quite crowded, so you might end up taking photos with strangers as if they're your companions.
Since it's unavoidable, just take as many photos as you can,
and then erase them with AI!
Be sure to use a Galaxy phone to erase them, not an iPhone.

Typically, after taking photos at Wukang Mansion,
people take a stroll along Wukang Road towards Anfu Road.
With abundant plane trees lining the street,
it's an absolutely wonderful place for a walk.

Now, for Wukang Road at night.
Or more precisely, just after sunset!
If the weather isn't great, I actually recommend visiting in the early evening,
as the gradual lighting creates an incredibly atmospheric scene. ✨️

During this visit, I walked all the way along Anfu Road and then to Wukang Road.
It's quite a long walk,
but the street is so beautiful that you won't even notice your legs getting tired.
You'll realize it once you get home...

Wukang Road Restaurant: Sichuan Citizen
If you visit Wukang Road, there's always one restaurant that comes up...
And that place is Sichuan Citizen.
It's a pretty famous restaurant, not just among foreign tourists but locals too!
It's known as a spot where you can enjoy spicy Sichuan cuisine without feeling overwhelmed.

Overall, it has a casual yet sophisticated vibe,
making it a perfect, comfortable spot to visit during your travels.
Some might think Sichuan cuisine is all about extreme spice and intensity, but surprisingly, many dishes here are adapted to suit international palates.
So, I think it's a great place to start your Sichuan food journey!

And a must-try menu item at Sichuan Citizen!
Their Basil Cocktails!
There are three types of basil cocktails,
and the most popular one (🍸 this cocktail!)
is the top item on the menu.
The cocktail on the right is a coffee-flavored basil slushy cocktail, and I highly recommend this one too!!
I suggest ordering a few different ones with your companions to try them all!!!
This is the second item on the basil cocktail menu.

I actually visited Sichuan restaurants
quite often back when I lived in China.
While I wouldn't say Sichuan Citizen's Sichuan dishes were *absolutely* the best I've ever had,
I felt it was a really good spot for Koreans (and any first-timers!) to try them out❣️

Wukang Road Cafe: 13de marzo
One of the most famous cafes on Wukang Road is
13 de Marzo.
If you're a fan of Shanghai cafes, it's so famous that you've probably heard of it at least once.
At first, I thought it might be a Spanish brand,
but it's actually a unique space that operates both a fashion brand and a cafe.

Even though I'm not usually one for teddy bear dolls,
I thought they were absolutely adorable, which tells you just how incredibly popular this cafe is.
So, even though I ordered my menu about an hour before heading to Wukang Road,
I still had to wait an additional 50 minutes...
It was a weekend, though, haha.

My friend, who insisted we go, ended up losing her bear after attaching it to her bag.......!!!
Please be aware that the bears' adhesive isn't the strongest, so be careful 🥰

If you want to truly experience the ambiance of the French Concession during your Shanghai trip, be sure to include Wukang Road in your itinerary 😆
You'll discover a different side of Shanghai's daily life, distinct from the Bund, offering its own unique charm! ❣️

Wukang Mansion, built in 1924, is a French Renaissance-style building characterized by its ship-like exterior. During the day, it's recommended to visit on a clear, sunny day to fully experience its European ambiance. In the evening, if the weather isn't ideal, it's best to visit around sunset when it's not too dark.
Sichuan Citizen offers spicy Sichuan cuisine that can be enjoyed relatively easily, with many dishes adjusted to suit foreign palates, making it great for first-timers. The basil cocktails are particularly famous; we recommend the top cocktail on the basil cocktail menu and the coffee-flavored slush basil cocktail.
13 de Marzo is a famous establishment that operates both a fashion brand and a cafe, with its teddy bear figurines being particularly popular. On weekends, even if you ordered your menu an hour in advance, an additional 50-minute wait might occur, so you should allow ample waiting time. Also, please be aware that the teddy bear figurines do not have strong adhesive.
We recommend a course where you walk from Wukang Mansion along Wukang Road towards Anfu Road, or walk along Anfu Road and then back towards Wukang Road. This path is lined with abundant plane trees, making it excellent for a stroll, and although the walking distance is quite substantial, it's said that the beautiful scenery makes you forget your tired legs.
