Waiting in Line

I visited around **noon on a weekend**, and as expected for such a popular spot with both tourists and locals, **waiting in line is a must** during peak lunch hours.

When you arrive, simply approach a staff member to register for a table. They'll hand you a receipt with a QR code that lets you track your real-time position in the queue. You can also monitor the waiting list on the TV screens near the entrance.

The restaurant itself is quite large, which means the turnover rate is fairly quick. I only **waited for about 20 minutes** before being seated.
If you're not a fan of waiting, a pro tip: you can **pre-register for a table using the Dazhong Dianping app**!
Inside the Restaurant

Once your number is called, they'll tell you your table number. You'll need to find your way there independently, as there isn't usually a dedicated usher.

The dining area is incredibly spacious with a huge number of tables, yet it was completely packed. During my visit, it felt like there were far more local diners than tourists, which speaks volumes about its popularity.
Ordering is simple: just scan the QR code on your table, and you can place your order and pay via Alipay.
Recommended Menu Items

Waipojia offers an extensive menu, which can be a bit overwhelming for first-timers. To make your choice easier, here are some combinations that tend to be a hit with international palates:
✔️ Mapo Tofu
✔️ Sweet and Sour Pork
✔️ Garlic Shrimp with Vermicelli
✔️ White Rice or Fried Rice
Our Food Review

First up, the Mapo Tofu!
This dish features soft tofu bathed in a spicy sauce, with the distinct, numbing sensation from Sichuan peppercorns emerging as you eat. It's not overwhelmingly hot, but more of a 'mala' (numbing and spicy) flavor profile that fans of Sichuan cuisine will surely appreciate.

I personally found it much more enjoyable when paired with fried rice rather than eaten alone. The fried rice itself was decent, nothing extraordinary.

The Sweet and Sour Pork here is quite different from what you might find in some other cuisines. The tender pork pairs wonderfully with a tangy-sweet sauce, and the batter is incredibly crispy and flavorful.
There's no unpleasant gamey taste, and it's a fantastic choice for anyone who might find heavily spiced Chinese dishes a bit too intense.

And then there's the Garlic Shrimp with Vermicelli, a dish widely ordered by many international visitors at Waipojia!
This dish features succulent shrimp generously topped with minced garlic, served over a bed of delicate vermicelli noodles. While it's a combination that's hard to dislike, I personally had very high expectations and found it to be good, but not particularly unique or mind-blowing.
How to Get a Discount!

Before you visit Waipojia, here's an essential tip for saving some cash!
By searching for "外婆家 青岛万象城店" on the **Dazhong Dianping app**, you can often find **discount coupons**.
The Dazhong Dianping app even supports English translation, making it easy to navigate and find what you need.

For example, I found a 100 CNY voucher available for purchase at 89 CNY (that's roughly a ~$14 value for about ~$12). By showing this to the staff before payment, they handled the whole process. I ended up paying 110.9 CNY (approximately ~$15) after a total discount of around 15 CNY (about ~$2)!
Overall, Waipojia in Qingdao isn't necessarily a mind-blowing gourmet experience, but it's an excellent spot for enjoying a variety of Chinese dishes at a great value.
It's highly recommended for:
✔️ Those who want to share and try various Chinese dishes.
✔️ Travelers seeking an affordable restaurant in MixC Mall.
✔️ Anyone looking to take advantage of Dazhong Dianping discounts.
