Luyu Qingdao MixC Mall: Garlic Sea Bass Review 2026

A trip to Qingdao often includes a visit to MixC Mall (Wanxiangcheng), and among its many eateries, Luyu stands out with overwhelmingly positive reviews, especially from international visitors. While I usually steer clear of overtly 'touristy' restaurants when traveling abroad, in Qingdao, I've found that places popular with foreign palates often hit just right.

Luyu is conveniently located on the 5th floor of Qingdao's MixC Mall. Given how expansive MixC Mall is, finding the exact spot can be a bit tricky at first. Just head up to the 5th floor and look for unit number L511.

There are several escalators, but if you take the one at the very end, you'll find Luyu right in front of you!

Waiting & Best Time to Visit

Luyu is incredibly popular, so expect it to be bustling during peak lunch and dinner hours.

Since they don't take reservations, I highly recommend visiting right after their break time to avoid the longest queues.

For instance, when I arrived on a weekday at 5:30 PM, I was seated immediately. However, by the time I finished my meal, a line had already started to form.

The interior of the restaurant is quite spacious, with plenty of tables.

I'd anticipated a potentially chaotic atmosphere, typical of some bustling Chinese eateries, but being located within a modern shopping mall, the overall vibe was surprisingly clean and organized.

The Menu & Ordering

Ordering is super simple: each table has a QR code that you can scan to view the menu and place your order.

If you're using an app like Alipay, it often provides built-in translation, making menu selection a breeze.

The most popular dish, and truly a crowd-pleaser, is the Garlic Roasted Sea Bass! It's a garlic-infused sea bass stew that's hard for anyone, especially those who love bold flavors, to dislike.

The Star Dish: Garlic Roasted Sea Bass

A whole sea bass arrives on a large platter, generously topped with garlic, chili peppers, and green onions.

At first glance, with all those chilies, I thought it might be spicier than expected. But it wasn't the numbing, intensely spicy kind of heat you get from Sichuan "mala" dishes; it was a more palatable warmth.

The spice profile wasn't overpowering, and there was absolutely no fishy smell, which is a huge plus!

Paired with rice, it's an absolute flavor explosion – truly a "rice thief"!

You can easily portion the fish onto your individual plate. It mostly has larger bones rather than tiny, annoying ones, and they tend to be concentrated in one area, making it simple to navigate around them.

The fish itself was incredibly tender, thoroughly infused with that delicious garlic aroma. I thoroughly enjoyed it and could totally see why it's so highly recommended. While it might not be a "life-changing" culinary experience, it's definitely a solid, delicious meal worth trying!

The portion size is generous; if two of you are dining, one Garlic Sea Bass dish is usually more than enough to leave you feeling satisfied.

If you're extra hungry, you could consider adding just one side dish.

I tried what I believe was a lemon iced tea, but personally, it wasn't my favorite. For drinks here, I'd stick to a simple soda. MixC Mall has tons of fantastic bubble tea and milk tea shops, so save your dessert drink cravings for those!
