Uluru Camping vs Car Rental: Ayers Rock Guide 2026

My desert adventure on an Uluru camping tour, which I took when it was summer in Australia.

Uluru is fantastic to visit when it's winter in Australia

(which falls during the Northern Hemisphere's summer!).

That's because the desert during summer days is just way too hot.

In the Australian summer, the desert sun beats down intensely from early morning,

often limiting what you can actually do outdoors.

That's why June to August is the absolute perfect time to visit.

It also perfectly aligns with summer breaks!

While Ayers Rock in the Australian desert is warm during the day,

June to August is winter in Australia,

so nights in Uluru get surprisingly chilly.

If you get cold easily, you might even need to bundle up in a puffer jacket!

Ayers Rock, also known as Uluru—the center of the world!

This is what Australia is truly about!

During my independent trip to Australia last winter break in February, I spent a total of 4 days and 3 nights in Uluru.

I did a 1-night Uluru camping tour,

and then rented a car to drive through the desert from Ayers Rock to Alice Springs.

1. Uluru Camping Tour

Due to some scheduling constraints, I opted for a short

2-day, 1-night camping tour that only visited Uluru,

but most people usually go for a 3-day, 2-night tour, or even extend it to a 4-day, 3-night experience.

You typically fly into Ayers Rock,

join the tour right away,

explore Uluru and Kings Canyon,

and finish the journey in Alice Springs.

This is an action-packed 3-day, 2-night tour

that departs from Ayers Rock around 12:00 PM

and arrives in Alice Springs around 6:00 PM on the final day.

The biggest perk of a camping tour is that accommodation and meals are completely covered!

You'll sleep in safari tents or swags,

and meals are fully provided—think cereal or toast for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, and a hearty BBQ for dinner.

For the BBQ, you might even get to try some unique Aussie delicacies like kangaroo or camel meat!

It is physically demanding, and

most of the people joining the tour

are European working holiday makers traveling independently in Australia,

but you'll also occasionally see older folks, especially friendly British gents.

Uluru, Kata Tjuta, and Kings Canyon all offer

absolutely picture-perfect sunrise and sunset views.

The downside? Getting there is quite a trek,

and for the sunrise, you have to wake up at the crack of dawn.

We woke up at 4:30 AM just to catch the Uluru sunrise.

If you choose a camping tour for your Australian road trip, this packed schedule is practically guaranteed!

But catching both the sunset and sunrise at Uluru is an absolute must.

Just watching the shifting colors makes you feel a profound sense of awe.

2. Road Tripping with a Rental Car

If you're on a working holiday or traveling independently,

gathering 3 or 4 like-minded friends

and renting a car is a fantastic option.

The biggest advantage of a rental car road trip

is that you can plan your itinerary entirely on your own terms.

You also get the unique experience of driving right through the Australian outback!

Are you worried about driving in a foreign country?

If you're not a complete beginner but are just anxious about driving on the left side of the road,

you absolutely don't have to worry about driving in Australia.

Outback roads have no toll booths or traffic lights—

it's just a straight line for nearly 450 km!

However, because of potential wildlife hazards, make sure to book full-coverage insurance!

To travel independently by rental car,

you'll need to factor in accommodation, meals, and fuel costs on top of the car rental fee.

And accommodation in Uluru tends to be quite expensive.

It's physically demanding. Satisfaction varies heavily depending on the guide. You rarely see Asian travelers on Uluru camping tours.	You can customize the schedule to your liking. Travel exactly how you and your friends want. Extra expenses for meals, accommodation, and fuel on top of the rental car fee.

Aside from renting a car or booking a camping tour,

you can also stay at Ayers Rock Resort

and use a coach company called AAT Kings

to book day or half-day bus tours.

I highly recommend this option if you are traveling as a family on a self-guided trip to Australia rather than on a working holiday.

You can join tours by planning an itinerary that fits your own style,

and you can even use the tour bus to travel all the way from Ayers Rock to Alice Springs.

It really feels like it combines the absolute best parts of rental car road trips and camping tours.

No matter how you choose to get there,

Uluru is an absolute must-visit on any self-guided Australian adventure!
