When planning our Sydney trip, there was one activity my teenager couldn't stop talking about, and it turned out to be the absolute highlight: the iconic Harbour Bridge Climb. After the climb, he declared it his favorite experience of the entire trip!

Honestly, when we were mapping out our Sydney itinerary, my son made it clear this was at the top of his list. He's past the age for aquariums or zoos and isn't a huge fan of museums or exhibitions. What he really craves are active, thrilling adventures.

Initially, I admit, the price made me hesitate. My first thought was, "Can I talk him out of this?" But we have a family motto: everyone gets one major activity they really want to do on a trip. So, I took a deep breath and booked it.

1. Harbour Bridge Climb Courses & Time Slots

The Harbour Bridge Climb is an incredible activity where you ascend the iconic arches of Sydney's famous bridge. There are primarily three main courses to choose from:
Course Name | Features | Recommendation |
Summit Climb | The classic, original route. Goes directly to the very top along the upper arch. | The most popular choice for a complete summit view. |
Summit Insider | Navigates through the bridge's internal steel structure. Uses stairs instead of ladders. | Ideal if you have a slight fear of heights or prefer not to use ladders. |
Ultimate Climb | The longest route, crossing completely from the south to the north arch and back again. | For those with excellent stamina who want to truly conquer the bridge. |
You can also choose your climb time based on these courses: Sunrise, Day, Sunset, or Night. Sunset and Night climbs are the most sought-after and often sell out quickly, despite being on the pricier side. We tried for a sunset climb but couldn't snag a reservation.
The daytime climb, however, offers a fantastic advantage: crystal-clear views of the Sydney skyline and the Opera House.
The price is definitely on the higher side. For the basic Sunset Summit Climb, it's roughly ~$255 per person. Prices vary slightly depending on the course and time slot you choose.

⚠️ Essential Tips Before You Go
Arrive 30 minutes early.
The check-in process, including ID verification and signing safety waivers, can take longer than you expect. Safety is paramount, so they even conduct breathalyzer tests – no alcohol allowed!
Unless there's severe weather like lightning, the climb proceeds even if it's raining. They'll provide rain gear.
Dress comfortably.
They provide a special climb suit to wear over your clothes, so comfortable, athletic attire is a must. Wear sturdy sneakers. The bridge can be quite windy, so if you have long hair, definitely bring a hair tie.
Besides glasses or sunglasses, you cannot bring any personal belongings on the climb. This includes your cell phone, which must be stored in a locker. This policy is strictly enforced to prevent anything from falling and causing a serious accident.
After signing the safety waiver, you'll go through an audiovisual safety briefing. This is also a chance for climbers in your group to introduce themselves. Then, you'll change into the climb suits, store your belongings, and do a quick practice session with your climb guide.

You'll practice clipping your safety harness to the bridge's lifeline and ascending/descending ladders beforehand.
Once the practice is complete, it's time for the real climb! We were a bit worried because it had rained slightly before our scheduled time, but thankfully, the rain stopped, and it was just overcast during our climb. The lack of direct sunlight and cooler temperatures made for perfect climbing conditions.

The views of the Opera House and the Sydney skyline from atop the bridge were absolutely breathtaking. While my son loved the thrill, I was genuinely impressed by the scenery – it was far more stunning than I anticipated! Our guide was also excellent, stopping at key viewpoints to take fantastic photos of our group.

The entire climb, from start to finish, took about 3 hours. It was surprisingly physically demanding, and I felt quite tired by the end of it!

But my teenager? He showed no signs of fatigue and was absolutely buzzing with excitement!

Once the climb was over, the guide called out each person's name individually to present us with a climb certificate. I initially wondered why they had us do introductions, but this personalized touch was really nice. We also received a complimentary souvenir hat.

As you exit, you have the option to purchase the photos taken by your guide during the climb. Since personal phones aren't allowed, it's hard to resist! The photos were of great quality and served as a wonderful souvenir, so we ended up buying them.

Honestly, with a price tag of over ~$225 per person, it's not an activity you decide on lightly. It's often more popular with Western tourists than with Asian visitors.
However, if you're traveling to Sydney with children aged pre-teen or older, especially active boys, I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Unlike longer day trips to places like the Blue Mountains, which involve extensive travel time that can bore kids, the Harbour Bridge Climb offers an intense thrill right in the heart of Sydney. My son couldn't wait to tell his friends all about it!
As Australia heads into its warmer summer months (late 2026/early 2027), it's a fantastic time for outdoor activities like this climb. If you're planning a Sydney family vacation, especially with a teenager, definitely consider adding the Harbour Bridge Climb to your itinerary.
