If you're staying near Sydney's Darling Harbour or Chinatown,
you're in for a treat!
There's a unique restaurant that's absolutely worth a visit.
It's Mamak Haymarket, specializing in authentic Malaysian cuisine.
Today, I'll be sharing my experience with Mamak Haymarket's takeaway order!

Mamak Haymarket Mamak Haymarket |
Opening Hours: Mon-Fri 11:30 AM - 2:30 PM, 5:30 PM - 10:00 PM Sat 11:30 AM - 12:00 AM (midnight) Sun 11:30 AM - 10:00 PM Location: 15 Goulburn St, Haymarket NSW 2000 Australia |
Mamak is perfectly situated between Darling Harbour and Chinatown,
making it incredibly accessible.
We visited for a casual late-night snack after our dinner,
opting for takeaway.

Even late in the evening, the queue was impressively long!
This line is for dine-in customers, so if you're not up for a long wait,
we highly recommend doing what we did:
order takeaway and enjoy it back at your accommodation.
As a quick tip, right next door to Mamak is Heytea, a famous Chinese milk tea spot.
So, if you find yourself waiting in line,
grab a milk tea to sip while you wait!

The restaurant was much more spacious than it appeared from outside.
Yet, it was absolutely packed with customers, which truly showed how popular it is!
Good to know: takeaway customers can walk straight inside to place their order,
bypassing the long dine-in queue.

While waiting for our takeaway, we got to watch the incredible process of roti being made fresh inside.
Watching the skilled chefs at work made the waiting time fly by – it was truly captivating!

Seeing them expertly churn out roti after roti really gave us a sense of just how massive their order volume is.
And just by watching the thin dough being layered and cooked,
you could tell how incredibly chewy and delicious it would be!

📌 Menu (as of May '25)
Roti canal 10.5
Roti telur/planta/bawang 11.5
Roti telur bawang 12.5
Roti pisang/ kaya 12.5
Roti bom/tisu 15.5
Roti is definitely Mamak's most popular menu item.
Beyond roti, they also offer fantastic main dishes like curries and noodles,
so be sure to check out the English menu in the photos for more options!

📍Ordered Menu: Roti canai 10.5AUD
Since my goal was to try the food from a famous restaurant,
I placed a takeaway order for the most basic Roti.
When paying by card on a Sunday,
a 10% surcharge was added.

After waiting for about 10-15 minutes, I received the Roti.
I hurried back to my accommodation with it before it got cold!

The Roti came packaged in a small paper box.
The outside of the box was quite greasy,
suggesting it would be a rather oily dish.
Since it was for a late-night snack, I only ordered one,
but it wasn't a large quantity for two people to share.
It consisted of flower-shaped Roti and three types of sauces,
with one spicy sauce and two kinds of curry sauces.

As described on the menu, the Roti was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
However, since it's an oily dish, it would probably taste even better if eaten quickly
before it gets soggy.
Perhaps because the Roti dough itself was chewy and delicious,
it was flavorful even without the sauce.

I tried dipping the Roti into each of the sauces one by one,
but personally, I found it tastiest without any sauce.
And, the curry sauces paired better with the Roti
than the spicy one!

Mamak Haymarket is such a popular restaurant that there's a long queue
even on a Sunday late evening.
If you place a takeaway order, you can get your food without waiting,
so I recommend taking it back to your accommodation to enjoy.
The Roti was delicious, with a chewy texture and a savory, plain flavor,
and I can definitely see why it's so popular.
However, the portion size is a bit small for a full meal,
and the price isn't particularly cheap,
so it's perfect if you're having it as a late-night snack, just like we did!
If you find yourself near Darling Harbour in Sydney,
and you're craving some Malaysian food,
I highly recommend paying this spot a visit!
