Uluru Ayers Rock Tours 2026: Australia's Spiritual Heart
Dreaming of an unforgettable adventure? Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is Australia's spiritual heart, offering unique cultural insights and stunning natural beauty. Find out how to plan your 2026 trip.
If someone were to ask me about the most impressive travel destination I've ever visited?
I'd have to say Uluru in Australia, without a doubt! It's an experience that really sticks with you.
They say to embrace challenges when you're young,
and Uluru is definitely a place best experienced in your prime.
While I might hesitate if asked to do it all over again,
for anyone who's still thinking about it,
I wholeheartedly recommend you go!
This truly special Australian destination:
Uluru
The Earth's Navel
If you're imagining a city vibe like Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane?
Nope, that's not it at all!
Located right in the heart of Australia's Northern Territory,
this colossal red rock, also famously known as Ayers Rock, awaits.
Thinking you're just going to see one rock?
It's so much more than that!
You'll discover a breathtaking natural landscape,
where Australia's Aboriginal culture and traditions are deeply preserved,
and Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park
is even listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site! 🤩
A place where you can 'Shout Your Love from the Center of the World'
Right in the heart of Australia,
it's affectionately called 'The Earth's Navel'.
Hearing it described as a must-visit destination before you die,
I impulsively planned my trip without even researching the 'city' itself.

Haha, the photos I found on Google had the Amy and Randa sisters absolutely cracking up!
Nevertheless, if you're dreaming of a truly unique Australian adventure,
Uluru
is an absolute must-do!
How to Get to Uluru

I took a route transferring from Brisbane to Cairns, and then Cairns to Alice Springs.
Near Uluru, in Yulara,
you'll find Ayers Rock Airport (Connellan Airport),
accessible via domestic flights within Australia.
(No direct international flights)
Travel Time from Major Cities:
✅ Sydney: Approximately 3 hours
✅ Melbourne: Approximately 2 hours 40 minutes
✅ Brisbane: Approximately 3 hours 15 minutes
✅ Cairns: Approximately 2 hours 50 minutes

Instead of flying with Jetstar,
I opted for Qantas,
and even on a domestic flight, Qantas serves meals!
Love you, Qantas! 💖

I couldn't resist a quick stopover in Cairns.
I'm not usually a fan of water activities,
or even water itself,
so I initially skipped Perth and Cairns on my Australia trip.
But I felt a little pang of regret,
so I decided to dip my toes into a Cairns visit after all.

On the way from Cairns to Uluru,
even though it wasn't a premium seat,
I snagged a super spacious front-row spot, which was awesome!

And of course, a meal was provided,
which I thoroughly enjoyed.
(Gotta eat well before heading to Uluru...)

As we approached Uluru,
the land started turning red.
It was so amazing, I just had to snap a picture from the sky! ✨

Uluru Local Tours
The Rock Tour
From a Brisbane Study Abroad Agency
I ended up booking a local tour, but honestly,
using tours from platforms like ZoomZoom Tour or Klook
would probably be cheaper
without any extra commissions involved.

Describe my current state of mind:
A strange mix of excitement, regret, anticipation...
So many mixed feelings!

After a quick chat with our pickup driver who eventually arrived,
we loaded our luggage and hopped onto the bus.
First, before the tour officially kicked off, we headed to a backpacker's hostel
(This would be my first and last time staying at a backpacker's hostel during my Australia trip!)

It had a very rustic, remote feel,
and while not all Indigenous people are intimidating,
I'd heard so many warnings about being extra careful in Uluru from everywhere,
that my younger self couldn't help but feel a little timid back then.
To prepare for the next day's tour,
we dropped off our bags at the backpacker's,
then explored the local supermarket and took a stroll around the neighborhood.

I wasn't sure what the upcoming tour would bring,
but the backpacker staff were so friendly,
and we were lucky enough to get a 6-person dorm room
all to ourselves (just the two of us!), which made our first night in Uluru incredibly exciting!

Can you totally feel the complete difference from city life?

After grabbing our 'free' (question mark included!) breakfast sandwiches,
it was time for our tour itinerary to begin!
Uluru - Kings Canyon - Kata Tjuta
- Uluru Sunset/Sunrise - Sand Dunes

There were a total of 20 people on our tour! ️
My sister Miranda and I were the only Koreans on the trip,
and there weren't many other Asians either,
though I think there were some from Taiwan or Hong Kong.
The rest were mostly Westerners from places like Switzerland, the US, the UK, Germany, and even Sydney.
I wonder if Westerners are just the type to love a bit of challenging adventure?

Everyone was genuinely kind and friendly,
and I even contemplated getting a tattoo myself because one person's ankle tattoo was just stunning.

Yes, I climbed these mountains!
Mom, I made it!
Miranda, who had undergone special training to build up her stamina before the trip,
And then there was me, who hadn't exercised much,
and despite having decent basic stamina, I was utterly exhausted by the hiking.
But with every canyon we ascended,
the incredible natural landscapes we encountered
filled me with a sense of awe.
It was that awe that kept me from giving up and pushed me to keep climbing.
Meanwhile, the long-legged Westerners seemed to breeze through it,
while I was taking tiny, determined steps.
If the Catchwalk app had existed back then,
I'd be rich by now!
Haha!

*Heads Up for Kings Canyon!
Seriously, there are so, so, so many flies – it's wild!
But these flies are a bit sluggish, their bodies feel heavy, so
they're not super active.
They'll just land on your face and body and seem to forget how to leave...
A beekeeper's mask or a full-on insect net hat is absolutely essential!

A mountain you have to come down from...
Why even climb it in the first place?
Still haven't quite grasped the allure of hiking, have I?

The true gem of the Uluru tour,
it's not some fancy hotel getaway.
It's collecting firewood with your guide,
haha, and even being super careful with water too ^^;

Uluru Nights: Where the Stars Pour Down

What is this, you ask??
It's called a 'swag' –
Have you ever experienced sleeping in one?

We grilled sausages,
got a bonfire going, spread out our swags all around,
and got ready for bed.

Someone's snoring, even the most natural bodily functions,
you get to experience it all, raw and real,
falling asleep under the vast sky in the middle of the desert.
It's a kind of wild, open-air camping!

Oops, I went a bit overboard with the content!
So, the rest of the Uluru travelogue for Day 2,
will be coming your way soon!
