A Fresh Hidden Gem in Taehwa-dong, Ulsan
Ukko Roast: The Ultimate Filter Coffee Sanctuary
Taehwa-dong has seen quite a few new cafe openings recently, but the one that completely stole my heart is Ukko Roast!
My sister Amy and I were brainstorming where to grab a drink when she mentioned this spot had been on her bucket list. Without a second thought, we made a beeline straight for Ukko Roast! :)
Ukko Roast (우코 로스트) Essential Information
Address: 1st Floor, 28-5 Osan 2-gil, Jung-gu, Ulsan
Hours: 08:00 AM - 04:00 PM daily

Tucked away in a quiet residential alley rather than the bustling main strip of Taehwagang National Garden, this spot offers a wonderfully serene escape.
It was actually our third stop of the day—after a hearty lunch and a family bingsu (shaved ice) session with our parents. The moment we stepped inside, the owner greeted us with the warmest, most genuine smile, instantly setting a fantastic vibe.
The Cozy Interior Space

Compared to the actual size of the shop, the seating is intentionally sparse. It comfortably accommodates about 4 to 5 parties, making it the perfect, intimate spot for quiet, meaningful conversations.

A pristine self-serve station is neatly stocked with napkins, wet wipes, fresh water, small plates, and cups.

True to its roastery roots, you can purchase their house-roasted beans in 100g (about 3.5 oz) bags to enjoy at home.

The owner's dedicated workspace! Interestingly, there is no espresso machine in sight. Ukko Roast is purely dedicated to the craft of filter coffee.
The Menu

The menu is beautifully minimal, focusing entirely on filter coffee and premium teas.
Each coffee selection is meticulously detailed, showcasing the origin country, region, farm, variety, and processing method.
They offer a rotating "Weekly Coffee" along with a curated lineup categorized into Yellow, Red/White, and Niche profiles.
There's even a unique custom option called "Your Blend," where you can choose two single-origin beans and have them custom-blended and brewed just for you.
For tea lovers, they serve three varieties of premium TWG loose-leaf tea: black tea, decaf black tea, and green tea.
After happily agonizing over the incredible selection, we ordered the Panama Agricola Pacamara Natural and the Colombia Los Nogales Java Anaerobic Natural.

Before our coffee even arrived, the owner kindly brought over some complimentary sweet treats, explaining that they don't sell desserts in-house.
We got some classic French-style langue de chat cookies and Bourbon sandwich cookies—such a nostalgic treat! The music here is also incredible. When we walked in, Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know" was playing, and when Oasis's "Wonderwall" came on next, my sister and I were practically singing along. The playlist is spot on!
Our Tasting Experience

Shortly after, our carefully brewed coffees were delivered directly to our table.
While there weren't separate printed tasting notes, the owner thoughtfuly labeled the paper coasters in both Korean and English to help us identify each cup.
We watched the owner meticulously stir the ice before serving, and that extra care paid off—one sip of the iced coffee was instantly, bone-chillingly refreshing!
While the Panama was lovely, both Amy and I fell head over heels for the distinct, bold character of the Colombia. It was an absolute standout.
"Wow, they really know what they're doing here," we both said simultaneously after the very first sip! Our excitement levels spiked instantly.
During our visit, we noticed several regulars stop by. The owner’s warm, friendly rapport with his customers was incredibly heartwarming to witness.

Just as we finished our cups and stood up to leave, the owner asked if we were in a rush and kindly offered us a complimentary tasting of a highly acidic coffee he was experimenting with.
Oh my goodness—one sip and our eyes practically popped out of our heads! It was astoundingly delicious. We literally gasped in unison.
I overheard something about it being a "Sapa" variety, but I really should have asked the owner for the exact details before we left. It was that memorable!
We joked that it’s almost a crime when the complimentary tasting cup is even more mind-blowing than the amazing drinks you actually ordered! Haha.
Final Thoughts

Here is the ultimate proof of how much we loved it—not a single drop left!
When I brought the empty glasses back to the counter, the owner politely said, "Oh, you could have just left them on the table!" Then, looking at the wet paper coasters stuck to the bottom of the glasses, he jokingly added, "You can actually just throw those on the floor!" We all burst out laughing. Even now, writing this post in 2026, that moment still cracks me up.
Ukko Roast is a place where the owner's genuine passion and dedication to the art of coffee shine through in every detail.
It's not just about the incredible filter coffee; you'll leave with a wonderful boost of positive energy.
If you're a true coffee enthusiast, this spot is an absolute must-visit in Ulsan!
