As you prepare for your Tsushima trip,

one thing you might ponder quite a bit is currency exchange.

You might think, 'It's a trip to Japan, so surely one international payment card will be enough, right?'

But when you actually travel around Tsushima,

you'll find there are quite a few moments when cash is essential.

While many large supermarkets and bigger restaurants

accept card payments,

smaller eateries, local shops,

and some transportation options

still require you to have Japanese Yen on hand.

From my multiple trips to Tsushima, I've learned that

the most convenient approach is to carry a good mix of both cash and cards.

But what if you didn't manage to exchange Yen in Busan, or

found yourself using more cash than expected during your trip?

Let me tell you how you can exchange currency

in both Hitakatsu and Izuhara.

01. Tsushima Currency Exchange: How Much Cash Should You Prepare?

You don't need to exchange your entire travel budget

into Japanese Yen cash for your Tsushima trip.

These days, you can use international payment cards

at supermarkets and some restaurants, so I generally recommend

a combination of cash for your basic needs and an international card.

Most trips to Tsushima are day trips or one-night, two-day stays,

so if you prepare too much Yen,

you might end up with leftover cash after your trip.

That's why when I exchange currency for Tsushima,

I prefer to prepare just what's needed, rather than converting my entire travel budget upfront.

And just in case you use more cash than anticipated,

I always carry a card that allows for overseas ATM withdrawals.

With this setup, you'll be much less likely to panic if you suddenly

find yourself short on Yen while there.

02. The Easiest Way: Exchange Currency at Busan Port Before You Depart

If you find it bothersome to search for currency exchange spots once you're in Tsushima,

the most convenient method is to get your Yen sorted before you even leave.

Your Tsushima adventure typically kicks off at Busan Port International Passenger Terminal,

and on the 2nd floor of the Busan Port International Passenger Terminal,

you'll find a Busan Bank currency exchange branch,

which you can use if you couldn't get Yen at your local bank.

However, their operating hours are from

7:40 AM to 7:20 PM, so it might be tricky to use if you're catching an early morning ferry.

But there are also ATMs available,

so make sure your card is set up for ATM withdrawals.

03. If You Need to Exchange Currency in Hitakatsu: AMASE and the Post Office ATM

Don't fret too much if you arrive in Hitakatsu without having prepared your Japanese Yen in Busan.

In Hitakatsu, you generally have two main options.

First, if you have Korean Won cash,

it's good to know about AMASE, located directly opposite the Hitakatsu International Terminal.

It's about a 1-minute walk from the terminal,

making it super convenient to find right after you disembark.

This method involves exchanging Korean Won cash for Japanese Yen,

which is a bit different from an ATM withdrawal using a card.

Your second option is the Hitakatsu Post Office ATM.

If you have a card that allows overseas ATM withdrawals,

you can withdraw Japanese Yen through the Post Office ATM.

It's about an 11-minute walk from the International Passenger Terminal,

or roughly 3 minutes from the Hitakatsu bus stop,

so it's a good spot to visit along with your Hitakatsu sightseeing or shopping route.

To summarize, in Hitakatsu:

If you have Korean Won cash, go to AMASE.

If you have an international ATM withdrawal card, use the Post Office ATM.

04. Where to Exchange Money in Izuhara | Post Office, FamilyMart, Lawson Convenience Stores

It's also quite common to run out of cash in Izuhara,

even more so than in Hitakatsu.

The central area of Izuhara, including Tiara Mall,

is packed with restaurants and shops, so you might find yourself

spending your Yen faster than expected while shopping and dining.

In such cases, it's good to know that

Izuhara's currency exchange options include

the Post Office ATM, FamilyMart ATM,

and Lawson convenience store ATMs.

Izuhara Post Office ATM

First up, you can use the Izuhara Post Office ATM.

Since it's located in the heart of Izuhara,

it's easy to access when you need cash while exploring

key facilities like Tiara Mall or the tourist information center.

If you have an internationally branded card that allows overseas ATM withdrawals,

you can directly withdraw Japanese Yen.

However, withdrawal availability may vary depending on your card type and terms of use,

so it's a good idea to check your card's international ATM withdrawal function

before your trip.

FamilyMart Convenience Store ATM

Your second option for exchanging money in Izuhara is FamilyMart.

Izuhara has FamilyMart stores, which is super convenient because

you can do some convenience store shopping and also withdraw Yen during your trip!

You can withdraw Yen from the ATM using a travel card or debit card

that's enabled for international withdrawals.

Especially if you need cash after post office hours,

remember the convenience store ATMs!

The big advantage is that you don't need to go out of your way to find

a currency exchange spot while traveling.

Lawson Convenience Store ATM

Lawson convenience stores are another great place to know about

for exchanging money in Izuhara.

While it's ideal if your accommodation is in the city center,

if you're staying a bit outside, this might be the closest option.

Among the ATMs installed in Lawson stores,

if you use a machine that supports internationally issued cards,

you can withdraw Yen with your international withdrawal-enabled card prepared in Korea.

Some ATMs offer Korean language guidance, making it

relatively easy for travelers unfamiliar with Japanese to use.

Similar to FamilyMart, availability may vary depending on your card type

and ATM model, and card issuer or ATM withdrawal fees may apply.

Knowing that convenience store ATMs are a great alternative

when you miss post office hours will definitely make your trip feel much more relaxed.

05. Tsushima Currency Exchange Tips

When you're in Tsushima, it's a good idea to prepare both cash and cards,

rather than relying solely on your card.

It's best to prepare your basic Japanese Yen in Korea beforehand.

Also, set aside some small cash for things like bus fares or small eateries.

And if you find yourself running low on JPY during your trip,

you can simply withdraw more locally with a card that supports

international ATM withdrawals.

For short trips to Tsushima, like a day trip or a 1-night, 2-day itinerary,

I found it much more important to know your currency exchange options in advance

rather than wasting time on it during your trip.

You can prepare beforehand at Busan Port,

sort it out upon arrival in Hitakatsu, or even if you run low while exploring Izuhara,

there's always a way.

So don't fret about currency exchange on your Tsushima trip;

just make sure to have a good mix of cash and cards ready.
