Choosing the right hotel in Tsushima is key to your adventure! Our 2026 guide breaks down Hitakatsu and Izuhara accommodations, helping you pick the ideal base for exploring this Japanese gem.
When it comes to accommodation for your Tsushima trip,
it’s less about finding a “good hotel” and more about “where you stay.”
That's what really matters.
In Tsushima, your accommodation location should be decided based on your arrival/departure port (IN/OUT) and whether you're renting a car.
But just looking at names and maps,
it can be hard to get a real sense of things, right?
For your itinerary, where should you choose to stay – Hitakatsu or Izuhara?
And what kind of accommodation would be best?
The answers are right here.
01. Hitakatsu vs. Izuhara: Understanding the Different Regions
Before you decide on your accommodation,
it's essential to understand what kind of places Hitakatsu and Izuhara are.
Hitakatsu
Located in the northern part of Tsushima,
it’s a small town you can reach in just 1 hour and 30 minutes if you depart from Busan.
Accommodations, restaurants, and supermarkets are clustered around the port.
You can think of it as the 'arrival hub' of your journey.

Izuhara
Located in the southern part of Tsushima, it's the administrative and lifestyle hub.
Dense with restaurants, supermarkets, izakayas, and hotels.
Places to explore even at night.
It's a vibrant center for both tourism and daily life.

02. The Biggest Differences for Tourists
Travel Atmosphere Differences
Category | Hitakatsu | Izuhara |
Atmosphere | Quiet | Vibrant Travel Vibe |
Evening Activities | Almost None | Izakayas Walks Possible |
Perceived Stay Length | Place for Short Stays | More Satisfying with Longer Stays |
When it comes to enjoying things day and night on your trip, Izuhara clearly offers more.
Travel & Flow Differences
Hitakatsu
Very easy to get from the ferry to your accommodation
Can sightsee nearby places by bicycle
Fewer attractions and dining options
No convenience stores
Izuhara
If you arrive at Hitakatsu Port, it's over a 2-hour transfer
If you arrive at Izuhara Port, you can sightsee on foot
Restaurants, tourist attractions, etc. are clustered together
Convenience stores available

Tourist Satisfaction Differences
In Hitakatsu's case, it's the most common port of entry,
offering great accessibility,
but its tourism infrastructure is relatively quite limited.
Those who take a day trip to Tsushima often experience this area,
which is why you might hear people say there's 'nothing to do'.
To truly experience Hitakatsu,
you'll need to rent at least a bicycle.

While the journey to Izuhara from Busan can take around 2 hours and 30 minutes (often involving a bus transfer or a longer ferry route),
and you might pass through areas with rougher seas,
the boat journey can sometimes be tiring.
However, once you disembark at Izuhara Port,
there are many places you can reach on foot, enriching your travel itinerary.

03. So, Which is Better for Tourists?
Hitakatsu is Better For:
Hitakatsu IN·OUT
Short trips without a car rental
Those who dislike moving around a lot
Those who want to enjoy a 'hotel-cation'
Here, the tourist attractions are difficult to explore on foot,
so it's often used as a base for transferring to Izuhara.

Izuhara is Better For:
2-night or longer trips
Foodie spots, izakayas, and supermarkets are important
Couples or parents traveling
Those who want a distinct 'traveling vibe'
From a tourist's perspective, Izuhara will feel more 'like a true destination',
rich with experiences.
It's an area where historical sites, famous shopping malls,

and delicious eateries are all gathered.
To sum it up in one line:
Hitakatsu: Great for its convenient accessibility
Izuhara: Great for feeling like a true travel destination
That's why many people find this combination most satisfying:
Hitakatsu IN → Izuhara Accommodation → Hitakatsu OUT
I usually prefer this itinerary too.
04. When You Should Book Accommodation in Hitakatsu
If this is your itinerary, Hitakatsu is the answer!
Arrive in Hitakatsu · Depart from Hitakatsu
Travel without a rental car
Day trip or 1-night, 2-day itinerary
Relaxing staycation (Toyoko Inn, Nagisanoyu Onsen, Miuda Beach)
You can move directly from the ferry to your accommodation,
so there's almost no travel stress.

Recommended Hotels in the Hitakatsu Area
Toyoko Inn Tsushima Hitakatsu
It's not easy to walk to Hitakatsu Port.
Take a taxi or use a bicycle.
Breakfast included, stable prices.
In summer, many people combine Miuda Beach and Nagisanoyu Onsen into a relaxing staycation itinerary without moving to other tourist spots.
Guesthouse-style Accommodation Near Hitakatsu Port
To be honest, Hitakatsu doesn't have many clean and luxurious accommodations that perfectly match the preferences of many international travelers.
There are many guesthouse-style accommodations where you'll need to share common areas.
If Toyoko Inn Hitakatsu is fully booked and you can't make a reservation, consider these options.

05. When to Book Accommodation in Izuhara
Izuhara is Recommended If Your Itinerary Looks Like This
Arrive in Hitakatsu · Depart from Izuhara
Arrive in Izuhara · Depart from Izuhara
Leisurely trips of 2 nights or more
Access to great restaurants, izakayas, and supermarkets is important
Izuhara is essentially the main city of Tsushima,
so the travel atmosphere and overall satisfaction are definitely different.

BEST Recommended Hotels in the Izuhara Area
Toyoko Inn Tsushima Izuhara
In Izuhara, Toyoko Inn is also the most popular accommodation.
Its location, price, and cleanliness are all consistently good, so anyone who stays there is sure to be satisfied.

However, it gets fully booked quickly,
so once your travel dates are set,
make sure to book your accommodation promptly. If you're renting a car,
you'll also need to reserve parking at the same time, as it's first-come, first-served for free use.
Hotel Belleforet
The reason I recommend this place is its accessibility.
10-minute walk from Izuhara Port
1-minute walk from Tiara Mall
Isn't the location amazing?

If you stay here, you won't need a rental car
as you can explore Izuhara's commercial district and tourist attractions on foot.
This place also has an excellent location and tends to get booked up quickly after Toyoko Inn.

06. Accommodation Selection at a Glance by IN·OUT Itinerary
Itinerary | Recommended Accommodation Area |
Hitakatsu IN · OUT / No Rental Car | Hitakatsu |
Hitakatsu IN · OUT / With Rental Car | Hitakatsu |
Izuhara IN · Hitakatsu OUT | Izuhara |
Hitakatsu IN · Izuhara OUT | Izuhara |
Izuhara IN · OUT | Izuhara |
07. Wrapping Up
Choosing accommodation in Tsushima isn't about
expensive hotels vs. cheap hotels.
The key is to select the right area for your itinerary + a verified hotel within that area.
✔ First, check your arrival (IN) and departure (OUT) ports.
✔ Next, confirm whether you'll be renting a car.
✔ Only then should you choose your hotel.
Since there aren't many great accommodations compared to the number of travelers,
these steps should ideally be done simultaneously.
If you keep saying 'I'll do it tonight' or 'I'll do it tomorrow,'
you might find yourself without a place to stay, frantically searching!
So, make sure to check for available rooms on your travel dates first!
📍 Toyoko Inn Tsushima Izuhara
771-1 Izuharamachi Imayashiki, Tsushima, Nagasaki 817-0021 Japan
In this case, it's best to stay in Hitakatsu. You can go directly to your accommodation after getting off the ferry, minimizing travel stress, and it's suitable for day trips, 1-night/2-day itineraries, and hotel-centric stays.
Toyoko Inn Tsushima Hitakatsu is not easily accessible on foot from Hitakatsu Port. Therefore, it's recommended to take a taxi or rent a bicycle to get there.
Hotel Bellefore is recommended. It's located just a 10-minute walk from Izuhara Port and a 1-minute walk from Tiara Mall, allowing you to conveniently explore Izuhara's commercial areas and tourist attractions without a rental car.
Many tourists are most satisfied with the combination of 'Hitakatsu IN → Izuhara accommodation → Hitakatsu OUT'. This combination offers both good accessibility and a rich travel experience.
