Tongyeong is renowned for its incredibly fresh seafood, and while many visitors flock here for live, straight-from-the-tank sashimi, I'm actually a devoted fan of aged sashimi!
In a city where fresh fish and sashimi are practically on every corner, I heard whispers of an aged sashimi spot so good, people actually wait in line for it. So, before my self-imposed no-drinking pledge, I decided it was the perfect excuse for a night out.
It was genuinely one of the most satisfying meals I've had in a long time, and I couldn't wait to share it with you!
This is my review of Dae Won Ho Captain Kim in Tongyeong.

How to Make a Reservation

I made my reservation through Naver, which is a popular local platform.
If you're using Naver for your booking, make sure to grab any available coupons and apply them BEFORE confirming your reservation.
I booked first and only saw the coupon afterward, so I sadly missed out 😂

Outside the restaurant, they display the day's assorted sashimi lineup, and it seems they also use a digital waiting system like 'Tableing'.
There was a wait when we visited, so I highly recommend making a reservation via Naver or utilizing their waiting system if you plan to go!
The Menu

The menu is posted right at the entrance before you even step inside. They even have a 'Mini Assorted Sashimi' option, perfect for solo diners who don't want to over-order!
Beyond sashimi, they offer a variety of other tempting dishes like grilled fish and oden udon. If you're with a group, you'll find plenty to share and enjoy.

Ordering is super convenient via tablet, so you don't have to keep flagging down staff in a busy restaurant.
I ordered the Small Assorted Sashimi (소) for ~$37. And don't forget to ask about their review event – it's worth participating in!
Complimentary Appetizers (Banchan)

The meal starts with a delightful spread of complimentary appetizers (banchan), including tofu kimchi, corn salad, refreshing white kimchi, and savory quail egg jangjorim.
That white kimchi? Absolutely a game-changer! It's so good, and yes, you can get refills – I definitely asked for more.

Other sides included steamed cabbage, a pungent fermented anchovy sauce (galchi-sokjeot), and crisp raw cabbage drizzled with a rich sesame dressing.

We also received a simple, comforting miso soup that tasted just like the ones I've enjoyed in Japan.

And for a truly lovely touch, we were given a welcome shot of plum wine! 😄 It wasn't too alcoholic and had a delightful, refreshing taste, perfect for kicking off our meal.
Assorted Sashimi (Small)

Here it is – the small assorted sashimi platter we ordered. Keep in mind that the specific types of fish included can vary daily based on seasonality and availability.
Aside from the tuna and shime saba (marinated mackerel), I honestly couldn't name the other types of fish on the plate 😅, but every single piece was a delight.

The sashimi came with a fantastic array of accompaniments: gamtae salt (a type of seaweed salt), takana pickles, shio kombu (salted kelp), fresh wasabi, and a savory barley doenjang (fermented soybean paste). It truly felt like an authentic Japanese sashimi experience.

Because it's aged sashimi, the texture was incredibly tender yet delightfully chewy. While it was delicious paired with the white kimchi, the fish itself was so flavorful that I mostly enjoyed it with just a hint of wasabi and soy sauce.
The second type of fish in the photo was exceptionally tasty, but I, unfortunately, don't know its name! ㅠㅠ

And what's a delicious meal without a drink? While sake or soju are often considered the classic pairings for sashimi, we opted for beer tonight! 🍺
They also offer corkage, so if you have a special bottle you'd like to bring, keep that in mind!

Among the complimentary sides, they even provided 'shari' (seasoned sushi rice), allowing you to craft your own mini sushi pieces!
It was a fun touch, but I wanted to save room for more sashimi, so I stuck to the fish.

My boyfriend's absolute favorite combination was white kimchi + garlic + chili + makjang (spicy Korean dipping sauce).
The chilies were incredibly spicy, so I mostly avoided them. But for those who love a good kick, my boyfriend highly recommends trying this combination!

When the food is this good, "just one more drink" quickly turned into four bottles! It's a testament to how much we enjoyed the atmosphere and the meal.

While we were enjoying our drinks, a complimentary grilled damselfish (jari-dom) arrived!
I'd only seen this type of fish during my trip to Jeju Island, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it in Tongyeong!

We also received fig cream cheese for participating in their receipt review event. Even though it was free, they gave us a generous portion. This was absolutely delicious, so definitely take advantage of the review event!

My boyfriend and I aren't typically big eaters, but we cleaned every single plate without leaving a crumb.
We briefly considered ordering the spicy fish stew (maeun-tang) but decided to save room for a second round elsewhere, ending our meal with just the sashimi. Yet, we were perfectly satisfied and full!
For anyone seeking an exceptional aged sashimi experience in Tongyeong, or looking for a romantic and atmospheric spot for a date night, I wholeheartedly recommend Dae Won Ho Captain Kim.
The restaurant is impeccably clean, and the array of complimentary appetizers is outstanding, making it the ideal place to enjoy some drinks. It was the perfect last hurrah before my 'no-drinking' resolution!
Daewonho Kim Seonjang operates from Monday to Saturday, from 5 PM to 1 AM the following day. The last order is at 11:35 PM, and it is closed every Sunday.
Daewonho Kim Seonjang does not have a dedicated parking lot. You can park at the nearby Mujeon No. 1 Public Parking Lot or on the street around the restaurant.
You can receive a discount by downloading and applying a coupon in advance when making a Naver reservation. However, please note that it may be difficult to apply the coupon if you find it after making the reservation.
The price of the small assorted sashimi platter (Modum Hoe So) is ~$36. Basic side dishes include Dubu Kimchi (tofu and kimchi), corn salad, Baek Kimchi (white kimchi), quail egg jangjorim (braised eggs), steamed cabbage, galchi-sokjeot (fermented hairtail fish guts), fresh cabbage with sesame sauce, miso soup, and plum wine.
