I'm usually not a huge fan of zoos,
but visiting Taronga Zoo this time
was definitely one of my best decisions.
It was completely different from any zoo
I'd ever experienced before.
I'm excited to share my review of Taronga Zoo,
Sydney's iconic zoo, a place where you can experience
both the vibrant cityscapes of Sydney and its stunning nature simultaneously.
It's also perfect for a family trip with kids!

Although it's very close to the Sydney city center,
it's located on the north side of Sydney,
so you'll need to take a ferry from the city center
or cross the Harbour Bridge to get there.

How to Get to Taronga Zoo
1. By Ferry
From Circular Quay Wharf,
take the F2 ferry, and after approximately 10-15 minutes,
you'll arrive at Taronga Zoo Wharf.
From the wharf, take bus number 238 towards Taronga Zoo,
and you'll arrive in about 10 minutes.
Ferry fare (one-way): approx. 7 AUD

Once you get off the ferry,
you can catch a bus right in front, so finding your way is easy,
and the signs are clear. No need to worry at all!
2. By Bus
From Wynyard Station,
take bus number 100
and alight at Taronga Zoo, Bradleys Head Rd (the main entrance).
Travel time: approx. 30 minutes
Frequency: approx. every 5-20 minutes
(varies depending on day and time)
Purchasing Tickets
I couldn't decide if or when I'd visit the zoo,
so I ended up buying tickets right before I went.
While on-site purchase is available
at the ferry wharf and the zoo,
I highly recommend buying your tickets
online in advance.
If you purchase mobile tickets in advance
through the official Taronga Zoo website
or a domestic travel platform, you can enjoy a cheaper price
than on-site purchase and enter directly without waiting in line.

Zoo Features
1. A Zoo with Views of Sydney's City Center
Ascend to the zoo, situated on a gentle hill,
and once you reach the observation deck,
you'll see the buildings of Sydney's city center all at once.
The expansive views,
with the sky and city laid out before you,
offer a scene rarely found in typical zoos,
making it truly refreshing and wonderfully open.
2. A Scent-Free Zoo
One of the reasons I'm not particularly fond of zoos
is often that distinct zoo smell.
However, Taronga Zoo had almost no zoo smell at all!
Situated on a high hill right next to the ocean,
the wind circulated well throughout our visit,
and there weren't any animals that seemed 'locked up'.
The facilities were also kept incredibly clean and well-maintained,
making it seem like a wonderful place to visit with children.
The lack of odor also made it clear
that the animals were living in an environment
where they could feel truly comfortable.
Adorable Animals
At Taronga Zoo, the enclosures are designed to be quite open,
allowing us to see the animals up close.
We got to see Sydney's iconic animals,
kangaroos and koalas, right before our eyes.
Watching the kangaroos graze and hop around
in their spacious habitat,
I truly felt like I was on a real Australian adventure!
I didn't have high expectations for the koalas,
as I'd heard they sleep most of the time,
but they were actually awake when we visited!
If you looked closely, you could see them moving slightly.
Some koalas were even
munching on eucalyptus leaves.
We stood for a long time watching a lovely koala
clinging to a tree with an adorable baby koala on its back.
The giraffes
were set against a backdrop of the city skyline across the water.
The sight was so breathtakingly beautiful
that I think I took the most photos of them.
Other Animals
Taronga Zoo Gift Shop
Our final stop was the gift shop.
Honestly, I think I enjoyed it even more
than the zoo itself!
Cute animal merchandise
was absolutely overflowing.
There were so many adorable things,
but the prices were a bit steep,
so I ended up buying socks for our little ones,
and they've worn them incredibly well for over a year.

Well, I ended up buying it at the airport anyway.
Top Tips for Enjoying Taronga Zoo
1. Walk to the Ferry Wharf
To make an early start,
we walked from the Fullerton Hotel to Circular Quay early in the morning.
The morning air was crisp and cool,
and the walk to the wharf
felt relaxed and leisurely, like a pleasant stroll.
Walking amidst the commuters heading to work,
we felt as if we were truly
immersing ourselves in Sydney's rhythm.
2. Take the Ferry There, Bus Back
We took the ferry to Taronga Zoo
and returned by bus.
Taking the ferry allows you to
enjoy the Opera House from various angles
and view the city skyline from the water.
You can even wave and say hello to people
on passing ferries!
Plus, you can also see the Harbour Bridge
up close.
Seeing two of Sydney's iconic landmarks
at once during the journey meant
we took lots of photos.
(Just a heads-up: it can get quite windy, so your hair might get messy!)
On the way back, taking the bus
allowed us to leisurely explore
Sydney's northern areas slightly,
offering a different vibe compared to the southern city center.
Our trip was short,
so we almost missed seeing the northern districts,
but I'm glad we got to see them this way.
And crossing the Harbour Bridge itself, which we had only seen from afar for days,
allowed us to see its steel structure up close.
It was much more magnificent than I expected, truly moving.
Overall Impression
Taronga Zoo was
a satisfying travel destination,
from taking the ferry there,
exploring the zoo,
to taking the bus back.
Seeing an awake koala,
and kangaroos hopping around,
made it a truly lucky day.
Experiencing Australia's iconic animals
in such a pleasant and beautiful environment
seems like a truly meaningful part of any Sydney trip.
