1. Fee-Free ATM Cards for Taiwan Taoyuan Airport

Taipei has two main airports: Taoyuan (TPE) and Songshan (TSA). Most international travelers will arrive at Taoyuan International Airport.
I also flew into Taoyuan Airport, and I'm here to share the best Taoyuan Airport currency exchange methods :)
Before we dive in, it's crucial to know which ATMs offer fee-free withdrawals for your specific travel card when withdrawing cash overseas.

Card Brand | Fee-Free ATM Banks |
Visa, Mastercard (Travel Wallet, Travelog, Toss Bank) | Cathay United Bank, Bank of Taiwan, Shin Kong Bank, Mega Bank |
UnionPay (Travelog) | Cathay United Bank, Bank of Taiwan, CTBC Bank |
As someone who's traveled extensively in Taiwan, I can confirm that Cathay United Bank ATMs are incredibly common, available in most subway stations across the city.

However, right after you exit the arrivals hall, I didn't spot any Cathay United. The banks I personally saw were Bank of Taiwan and Mega Bank.

I used my Travel Wallet card to withdraw cash from a Mega Bank ATM. While the machines might look a bit different, the process is generally similar across banks, so these photos should guide you regardless of your card.
Important Note |
Keep in mind that Travel Wallet typically waives card-specific fees for cumulative withdrawals up to ~$500 per month. A 2% fee usually applies to amounts exceeding this limit.
If you don't have a Travel Wallet card yet,
you can often get one issued the same day at a GS25 convenience store.

2. Taoyuan Airport ATM Locations & How to Withdraw Cash
Taoyuan Airport ATMs are conveniently lined up by various banks in the arrivals hall (first floor), right after you collect your baggage.
I arrived around noon on a weekday, and the lines were short. I waited about 5 minutes before making my withdrawal.
The withdrawal process is straightforward, especially since many ATMs offer English language options.

1️⃣ First, select your preferred language on the ATM.
(Choose English)

2️⃣ Insert your card and enter your PIN.
If it asks for 4 digits, enter your 4-digit PIN. If it requires 6 digits, enter your 4-digit PIN followed by '00'.

3️⃣ Select 'Savings Accounts'.

4️⃣ Choose your withdrawal amount.
I withdrew 5,000 NTD.
Collect your cash, confirm the transaction, and you're all set!
🚨 Traveler's Tip! |
While cash usage is high in Taipei (over 70% of transactions), there are plenty of ATMs throughout the city. You can easily find them in subway stations or around popular areas like Ximending, so there's no need to withdraw a huge amount all at once at the airport. |
3. Taoyuan Airport Currency Exchange FAQ

Q. Can I withdraw cash directly from an airport ATM?
A. Yes! If you've pre-loaded your Travel Wallet app with Taiwanese Dollars, you can withdraw your desired amount directly from any compatible ATM.
Q. Will I use a lot of cash during my Taipei trip?
A. Absolutely! You'll be surprised how many restaurants and cafes, even in popular areas like Ximending or Taipei Main Station, are cash-only. Even a hot pot restaurant costing over ~$28 per person might only accept cash, so be prepared for a higher cash usage.
Q. Do I have to exchange money at Taoyuan Airport?
A. Not necessarily. Taiwan has ATMs readily available at most subway stations throughout the city, so you can always withdraw cash once you've reached downtown. However, if you're converting from your home currency to USD, then to Taiwanese Dollars, you'll incur double exchange fees and added hassle. That's why I highly recommend preparing a travel card like Travel Wallet or Travelog in advance – some even offer same-day issuance at convenience stores!

For currency exchange at Taiwan Taoyuan Airport, loading up a travel card like Travel Wallet or Travelog and using a fee-free ATM was by far the most convenient method.
