1. How to Get to Tamsui

Getting to Tamsui is incredibly easy. Just hop on the MRT Red Line (Tamsui-Xinyi Line) from Taipei Main Station, and you can ride directly to Tamsui Station without any transfers.
The journey takes about 40 to 50 minutes.

Once you arrive, you can take a leisurely stroll through Tamsui Old Street all the way to Fort San Domingo like I did. Alternatively, you can catch a bus from the terminal right outside Exit 2!
Buses R26, 836, and 857 will get you to Fort San Domingo in just about 5 minutes.
I highly recommend the R26 bus, as it runs very frequently and is super convenient.
Since you'll be using public transit, make sure you have your EasyCard handy—it's the only transit card you'll need for both the MRT and buses.

2. The Perfect Tamsui Itinerary

Here is my highly recommended walking route for exploring Tamsui:

Fort San Domingo

Aletheia University
🔻
(Little White House)
🔻
(Hobe Fort)
🔻
Tamsui River Park
These attractions are relatively close to one another, making it a wonderful area to explore on foot.
The stretch covering Fort San Domingo, Aletheia University, and the Little White House is particularly famous for its gorgeous European-style architecture—perfect for your travel photography!
3. Fort San Domingo

Here's a great tip: a single ticket to Fort San Domingo actually grants you access to three major historical sites!
Includes: Fort San Domingo / Little White House / Hobe Fort
While you can buy tickets at the box office on the day of your visit, booking online is cheaper. I actually bought mine online right in front of the ticket booth and redeemed it instantly!
Prices are roughly ~$3 on Klook, ~$3 on KKDAY, and ~$3 on MyRealTrip. Currently, Klook offers the best deal!

If you only have time for one attraction in Tamsui, Fort San Domingo is the undisputed must-see.

This national historical site boasts over 300 years of history. The contrast of the red brick buildings against the lush greenery gives it a striking, exotic atmosphere.

Every corner feels like a photo zone. If you visit on a day with clear blue skies, your photos will look absolutely stunning!

Inside, you can explore the preserved spaces of the former British Consular Residence. Seeing the historical artifacts and living quarters adds a fun, mini-museum experience to the visit.
4. Aletheia University

If you exit through the side gate of Fort San Domingo, you'll step right into Aletheia University. The best part? Admission to the campus is completely free!

The campus feels like a movie set. The antique red brick buildings are incredibly picturesque.
In fact, you might spot more tourists than students wandering around!

For context, the nearby Little White House is famous for its elegant white facade and iconic arched corridors. Hobe Fort, on the other hand, features grand defensive walls and remaining artillery.
Since I visited Tamsui in the afternoon after a morning trip to Beitou, I skipped the Little White House and Hobe Fort to enjoy a relaxing evening by the river instead.
5. Tamsui River Sunset

You absolutely must stay at Tamsui River Park until dusk. It is widely considered one of the best sunset viewing spots in all of Taiwan.

There's a long, scenic walking path right along the water, dotted with charming cafes and street food vendors.
Grabbing a coffee and watching the sun dip below the horizon was the perfect end to the day!
If you're searching for a scenic and culturally rich day trip near Taipei, definitely add this Tamsui itinerary to your 2026 travel list. :)
