Tokyo, Japan
Tajimaya Coffeehouse Main Store
Hey global explorers, welcome back!
If you're planning a trip to Tokyo,
visiting a local cafe is an absolute must.
Specifically, I highly recommend finding a kissaten—a traditional, retro Japanese coffee shop.
On my recent trip, I visited a spot in Shinjuku called
Tajimaya Coffeehouse (Main Store),
and it delivered that authentic, old-school Tokyo vibe perfectly.
There are plenty of hip, modern cafes in Tokyo right now,
but there's something so special about this classic kissaten style
that completely won me over.
When your feet are aching from shopping around Shinjuku,
this moody, vintage cafe is the perfect hideaway.
Here is my 100% honest, unsponsored review :)
In today's post, we'll cover:
✔️ Tajimaya Coffeehouse Overview |
✔️ Menu Recommendations & Prices |
✔️ Honest Shinjuku Kissaten Review |
Let's dive in!
1. Tajimaya Coffeehouse: Basic Info
This hidden gem is incredibly convenient—
located just a 1-minute walk from Shinjuku Station.
It's right next to the famous Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane).
Established back in 1964,
Tajimaya has been preserving its
authentic kissaten atmosphere for decades.
While the prices are slightly on the higher side,
the proximity to Shinjuku Station
makes it an ideal rest stop before or after shopping.
They also have great operating hours,
so it's a fantastic spot for a late-evening coffee.

⏰ Hours: 10:00 AM - 11:00 PM
✔️ Cash Only
✔️ Smoking Permitted Inside
2. Menu Recommendations & Pricing
Tajimaya is a roasting cafe
that specializes in traditional pour-over coffee.
They have an extensive selection of coffee beans,
so it might take you a minute to choose!
They do serve iced coffee, but
to truly experience their signature nel drip method (flannel filter),
I highly recommend ordering a hot pour-over!
They provide a helpful flavor profile graph
on the menu, making it easy to pick a roast that suits your taste.
<📌 Menu Guide>
Menu Item | Price (USD) |
Nel Drip Coffee | ~$6 and up |
Toast Set | ~$10 and up |
Cake Set | ~$12 and up |
✅ 1 Drink Minimum Per Person, Cash Only
One minor inconvenience is that they only accept cash.
Because it was the end of my trip and I was running low on yen,
I only ordered coffee this time.
However, I've read rave reviews about their toast and cakes.
If you have the cash and the appetite,
definitely try a set menu!
3. Honest Experience & Vibe Check
To be honest, I stumbled upon this place
completely by accident while walking near Shinjuku Station.
The dark wood, vintage aesthetic practically pulled me inside.
Looking at Google Maps later, I noticed people often have to wait in line
right after lunch on weekends.
We visited around 2:00 PM on a weekday,
and luckily there were two seats open for us.
The cafe spans the 1st and 2nd floors,
but the seating is quite compact and intimate.
As soon as we sat down, the staff brought out water and sugar.
We ordered two hot nel drip coffees.
While the coffee itself wasn't the most mind-blowing cup I've ever had,
watching the barista carefully hand-pour the coffee
right in front of us made the experience totally worth it.
They also serve the coffee with a small pitcher of rich cream.
I recommend drinking it black at first,
then adding the cream and sugar halfway through.
It turns into a smooth, nutty, and decadent treat.
Yes, you pay a slight premium here,
but finding this kind of preserved, historical atmosphere
right in the middle of modern Shinjuku is rare.
It's incredibly photogenic, and I would absolutely
come back on my next Tokyo trip.
One quick heads-up for Western travelers:
This is a smoking-permitted cafe, so you will smell cigarette smoke.
This is very common for traditional kissatens.
Even as non-smokers, my partner and I stayed for an hour.
The vintage atmosphere is just that unbeatable.
4. Final Thoughts
If you're exploring Shinjuku and want a unique coffee break,
I highly recommend Tajimaya Coffeehouse.
Skip the familiar Starbucks this time,
and immerse yourself in the retro charm
of a true 1960s Tokyo kissaten.
