After personally diving into a variety of unique tours, it became crystal clear: day tours are an absolute game-changer when planning your Taiwan adventure!
And along the way, I picked up some golden nuggets of wisdom.
For the Yehliu-Shifen-Jiufen (Yes-Ji) tour, it’s less about *where* you go and more about *the sequence* you visit them in – that's what makes or breaks your day!
The Yilan County Day Tour (Kavalan included!) is fantastic even if you're not a big drinker.
Plus, since most of it is indoors, it's a wonderfully atmospheric route, even on a rainy day!
And here's a secret: dedicate a day to souvenir shopping *between* your tour days.
It feels like a much-needed breather… and ensures you'll actually have the energy to wake up on day three!

Ximen Station Exit 5 is pretty much the unofficial official meeting point!
Head there in the morning, and you’ll find not just your tour group, but several others, each with their own distinct flag.
Our wonderful guide had married a local Taiwanese and made Taiwan their home.
The moment we boarded the bus, they declared:
"Today, we're doing things differently – we'll visit in the opposite order of most tours!"
And so, instead of Yehliu, we headed to Shifen first!
This brilliant move meant we didn't waste a single moment at Shifen.
Upon arrival, the crowds were surprisingly thin!
Our guide mentioned they'd flipped the itinerary specifically to dodge the masses, and it truly paid off.
The sky lantern shop was already pre-booked.
The moment we arrived, we grabbed our brushes, penned our wishes on both sides of the paper, and with a simple raise of the hand, a staff member promptly folded it and got it ready.

What followed was truly unforgettable!
A staff member guided us to the railway tracks, then began a rapid-fire delivery of instructions in perfect Korean:
"Alright, everyone~ Smile! V-signs with both hands! Cheek heart! Hold the paper! A little closer, please!"
As we scrambled to follow their energetic directions, before we knew it, our lantern was gracefully soaring into the sky.
Honestly, they seemed to speak Korean better than I do!
As I watched our lantern ascend, I couldn't help but wonder where they all ended up.
Our guide shared a fascinating fact: the village elders collect the fallen lanterns and receive government subsidies for their efforts!
And for peace of mind, fire trucks and firefighters are always on standby nearby.
Our free time was brief, but incredibly efficient! Even our chicken wing fried rice and peanut ice cream were pre-ordered, so they were ready the moment we arrived at the stalls.
All payments were conveniently settled later, on the bus.
For me, the biggest game-changer on this tour was the complete absence of queuing!
Shifen Waterfall and Yehliu
Shifen Waterfall reveals itself after you cross a scenic suspension bridge and descend a flight of stairs.
Keep an eye out on the path – you'll spot two statues resembling mythical Haetae, said to be gods of wealth!
The one clutching a ball is the male, and the one cradling a cub is the female.
Legend has it that if you stroke it and then put your hand in your pocket, prosperity will come your way,
so all the groups of visitors lined up for a turn.
It's surprisingly fun to participate in these traditions.
Yehliu is famous for its iconic Queen's Head rock, which is surprisingly easy to spot.
Just head towards the longest line of people!
Our guide emphatically warned us not to touch the rock,
joking that if we did, we'd end up on CNN news together!
It turns out, it's quite seriously protected.
To be honest, the entire coastal landscape was even more captivating than the Queen's Head rock itself.
YSJ vs YSJJ
Yehliu, Shifen, and Jiufen form the 'YSJ' itinerary, and if Jinguashi is added, it becomes 'YSJJ'.
Jinguashi is an old gold mining town, often visited quickly. It involves a bit of walking up and down hills.
While prices can vary depending on peak and off-peak seasons,
prices for YSJ tours are typically under ~$21, and YSJJ tours are generally within ~$28.
If you have an itinerary of 3 days or less, it might be better to skip Jinguashi.
You'll gain more by spending that time enjoying the sunset in Jiufen.

03. A Unique Taiwan Tour Experience

It's about a 1.5-hour drive from Taipei, located in Yilan County.
Its somewhat remote location makes it tricky for independent travel, so I decided on a tour from the outset.
I booked a tour that only included pickup and drop-off,
but fortunately, the driver turned out to be a guide, so we even got fascinating explanations along the way!
When I asked why the distillery was specifically located in Yilan,
I was told it's the hometown of the chairman of the King Car Group, who produces Kavalan.
I couldn't help but chuckle at the delightful simplicity of the reason!
The Aroma Hits You Immediately!
The moment you open the entrance, the rich aroma of fermenting whisky envelops you.
It's so potent that even non-drinkers might feel a little tipsy just from the scent alone!
As you ascend the stairs, you'll pass through several exhibition courses,
and almost at the end, in the oak barrel storage warehouse, you'll find rows and rows of oak barrels standing tall.
Each one has its production year and number meticulously labeled,
and surprisingly, they're all standing upright, not lying down.
I was quite puzzled by this, as I'd always known that whisky barrels are typically stored horizontally.
It turns out this is due to Taiwan's famously frequent earthquakes.
After seeing them securely strapped down with belts, it made perfect sense.
Among all the fascinating facts I learned here, the aging process truly stood out.
Scotch whiskies typically display their age on the label, like 12 years or 18 years.
However, Taiwan's hot and humid climate significantly accelerates the aging process.
They said that just 3 to 5 years of aging here can achieve the equivalent effect of a 15-year-old whisky!
That's why Kavalan doesn't focus on age statements, but rather on the types of oak barrels they use.
I also learned then that the distillery was founded in 2008. I was surprised by its relatively short history given its widespread fame!

Is it fun even if you don't drink alcohol?
Yes!!
Even my family didn't all drink.
Whisky tasting costs an additional 800 NT, so you can simply opt out if you prefer.
On the second floor, there's a Mr. Brown Cafe that serves whisky pudding.
It has a subtle whisky essence, making it a perfect dessert.
If you decide to do a tasting, you'll need to choose a location.
If you taste on the 1st floor, you'll receive a coupon of the same value that can be used at the gift shop.
If you taste on the 2nd floor, you can enjoy it with cafe food.
We chose the 2nd floor because we planned to have lunch there too.
Three different types were served, 20ml each, and the aromas were truly delightful.
However, it was quite strong for a midday drink!
Since everything is indoors, it's a fantastic option for a rainy day itinerary.
However, you'll need to allocate a full day due to the round-trip travel.

04. Taiwan Souvenir Shops - A Day for Strolling
After two days of tours, by the third day, you just don't feel like going anywhere else.
This is the perfect itinerary for a day like that.
Lai Hao's Yongkang Street main branch and Ximending branch have quite different vibes.
The main branch spans the first floor and a basement, offering a wide array of teas, snacks, and souvenirs.
There's even a space for checkout and stamp collecting.
The Ximending branch is single-story and just a 2-minute walk from Ximen Station Exit 6.
I've visited both, and the main branch was filled with a diverse collection of unique items,
while the Ximending branch was incredibly convenient due to its easy accessibility.
I spent the most time looking at the miniature food magnets.
They had xiao long bao, beef noodles, and luroufan all miniaturized to fingertip size, making you want to buy them all the moment you see them.
Prices range from 80-300 NTD, so it's not too heavy on the wallet.
Which, of course, makes it even more dangerous... right? 😉
It was perfectly located for a stop on the way back after exploring the night markets on the evening before heading home.

Day 1: Yeseuji → Day 2: Unique Shops → Day 3: Kavalan
This itinerary strategically places a day of leisurely walking between the tours.
If you only have 2 days, it's better to omit Kavalan.
Travel time makes it difficult to add other activities.
