Planning a trip to Taiwan soon? There is one absolute essential you need to secure before you fly: the multi-purpose EasyCard.
Today, I will walk you through how to pre-book and pick up your EasyCard at Taoyuan Airport, along with my personal experience using it around Taipei.
The EasyCard is Taiwan's ultimate contactless smartcard. You can use it for public transit like the MRT, city buses, and trains, as well as at supermarkets and convenience stores.
Essentially, it is one card for almost all your daily vacation needs.
Taiwan still relies heavily on cash, meaning you often have to carry a lot of coins and bills. By loading funds onto your EasyCard, you can minimize the amount of physical cash you carry, making your daily explorations much more convenient and secure.
While you can purchase an EasyCard at local convenience stores after arriving, I highly recommend pre-booking your card online. This allows you to pick it up immediately upon arrival at the airport and use it to ride the Airport MRT straight into the city.

Next, let me guide you through the process of exchanging your voucher for the physical EasyCard at Taoyuan Airport (TPE).
Both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at Taoyuan Airport have designated pickup service counters.
They are located on the B2 level of each terminal, right along the path to the Airport MRT station platforms. It is incredibly straightforward to find, so you won't have any trouble navigating there.
Look for the service booth with the 'ezfly' sign, as shown in the photo.
While the photo displays a larger booth setup, the current physical counters at the airport might be slightly more compact. Rest assured, they are still situated directly on the way to the MRT, making them very easy to spot.
The counter is fully staffed. Simply present the QR code from your online booking confirmation on your phone, and they will hand over your physical card immediately.
Depending on the stock at the counter, you might even get to choose your card's design.
When I redeemed mine, they had adorable Esther Bunny and Piske & Usagi character designs available.
I chose the Piske & Usagi design, which features a beautiful holographic finish on the front and the standard EasyCard layout on the back.
The entire pickup process at the airport took less than two minutes. Pre-booking is definitely the smartest move to save time!
Now, let me share my experience using the EasyCard to navigate around Taipei.
I used my EasyCard most frequently on the Taipei MRT (subway). Operating it is incredibly simple.
Just tap the card on the designated sensor at the ticket gates, exactly as you would with transit cards in cities like New York, London, or Tokyo.
Since it is a prepaid card, make sure to keep it topped up with cash at any station ticket machine or local convenience store.
After a smooth ride, I got off at Songshan Station.
When leaving the station, simply tap your EasyCard on the exit gate sensor once more to complete your journey.
If you choose not to use an EasyCard, you will have to check the fare map, find the correct amount, and purchase single-journey tokens at the vending machines every single time you ride. It gets tedious very quickly.
Using the EasyCard completely eliminates the hassle of buying individual tickets. It is highly recommended for a stress-free trip!
