Your Ultimate Guide to a 2-Night, 3-Day Taiwan Adventure

Taipei and Tainan: A Whirlwind Day Trip Itinerary

When you're planning a 2-night, 3-day trip to Taiwan,

most people typically include Taipei city center, along with places like Yehliu, Shifen, and Jiufen, right?!

I certainly did that on my very first trip to Taiwan!

But for *this* 2-night, 3-day Taiwan adventure,

I decided to go beyond just Taipei,

and even squeezed in a day trip to Tainan!

From our 9:30 AM arrival at Taoyuan Airport on Day 1,

right up until boarding our 6:10 PM flight on the last day,

we truly made the most of every single moment! 😂

To cut straight to the chase,

if there's a reason you absolutely must go to Tainan,

a day trip is possible even on a 2-night, 3-day itinerary!

However, if you're a first-timer to Taipei

and you want to leisurely explore Yehliu, Shifen, Jiufen, or the Taipei suburbs,

then an itinerary that takes you all the way south to Tainan, like ours,

might not be the best fit for you.

But for those of you who, like me, want to experience *everything* possible, even on a short trip,

I've put together my actual 2-night, 3-day Taiwan itinerary,

organized in chronological order for you!

Those who prefer a more relaxed pace, enjoying cafes or lingering in one spot for longer.

For the Tainan HSR, don't just purchase your ticket and think you're done;

make sure to check and reserve your desired train time and seat well in advance!

Day 1: Diving into Taipei

We touched down at Taoyuan Airport around 9:30 AM,

and that's when our incredible Taiwan adventure truly began!

Back in Korea, I had already prepared

my Airport MRT tickets and EasyCard in advance.

But right from the start,

I was supposed to take the Airport MRT Express,

but I accidentally hopped on the regular train instead! Oops! 😂

It wasn't a huge deal, of course,

but it just meant a few more stops and a bit more time compared to the express.

On our final day, heading back to the airport,

I made sure to double-check the express sign and got on the right one! 😆

For all you first-time visitors to Taiwan,

when taking the Airport MRT,

please, please double-check whether you're boarding the Express or the Commuter train!

First, we stopped by our accommodation, Meander 1948, to drop off our luggage,

and then immediately headed straight to Ximending.

Our Actual Day 1 Route:

Taoyuan Airport → Meander 1948 → Ximending → Ximen Guest House → Hao Wu Spirit Cafe → Taipei 101 → Accommodation → Liquor 58 → Carrefour → Accommodation

We really packed a lot into our first day, didn't we? 😂

After a meal and a cafe stop in Ximending, we headed to Taipei 101 in the evening.

If you have a tight itinerary, like our 2-night, 3-day Taiwan trip,

it's actually great to squeeze in Taipei 101 while your energy levels are still high on Day 1!

Of course, this is only really feasible if, like us,

you have a morning arrival flight. If you land in the afternoon or evening, it's more realistic to just focus on Ximending.

In the evening, we took another quick break back at our accommodation,

then headed back to Ximending to browse Taiwanese liquors at Liquor 58 and squeezed in some Carrefour shopping.

Day 2: Tainan Day Trip

For this 3-day, 2-night Taiwan trip itinerary,

the itinerary I deliberated over the most was Tainan.

I wondered if it was really necessary to take a whole day out of our Taipei plans

to go all the way down to Tainan.

But for us, who loved the drama 'Someday or One Day',

Tainan wasn't just another tourist spot;

it was a place we absolutely wanted to visit on this trip.

So, we boldly decided to dedicate an entire day

to Tainan.

In the morning, we departed from Taipei Main Station on the HSR.

Thanks to the High-Speed Rail,

a day trip to Tainan was possible even on a 3-day, 2-night itinerary.

However, we made another mistake here.

While we had purchased our THSR tickets in advance,

we didn't reserve our train times beforehand.

When we actually went to board, the seats for our desired time were sold out,

so we ended up having to sit separately from our travel companion, which was a bit of a bummer ㅠㅠ.

Especially with a short itinerary,

even a one or two-hour delay can be surprisingly critical.

So, for those planning a Tainan day trip,

don't just buy your tickets;

I highly recommend checking and reserving your preferred train times in advance!

Upon arriving at Tainan HSR Station,

we took a bus to the city center.

We could also use the EasyCard

that we had been using in Taipei,

so transportation wasn't a major hassle.

In Tainan, we mostly got around on foot, exploring:

Ganjing Myeongpumok → Quanmaojia Ganweichu Sanpotianshi → Hayashi Department Store → 32 Records → Shennong Street → Du Hsiao Yueh

in this order.

Personally, Tainan

has a distinctly different vibe from Taipei,

and I truly felt it was worth coming down for a day.

Especially if you've watched 'Someday or One Day',

there's a unique joy in seeing the places related to 32 Records in person.

It's a completely different feeling than just visiting typical tourist spots.

On the other hand, if you're not particularly interested in 'Someday or One Day'

and it's your first trip to Taiwan,

I'd probably suggest investing another day in Taipei

rather than spending precious round-trip travel time to include Tainan. ?!

It's your first time, after all! But Tainan is incredibly charming,

so I'd also recommend it to those who want to explore every corner of Taiwan!

But we didn't go straight back to our accommodation from there;

we even went to Ningxia Night Market! Haha.

Looking back, I honestly wonder how we had that much energy?! Lol.

Day 3: Souvenir Shopping Extravaganza!

Usually, on the last day,

most travelers take it easy around their accommodation,

before heading to the airport, right?!

But for us, three days felt way too short, so

we packed our last day with souvenir shopping and a food tour!🙂

After checking out, we left our luggage at the hotel and went on to:

Xiao Ban Bakery → L'Atelier Lotus → La Petite Perle → Jia Pun Yang Chiu → Yongkang Street Starbucks → Jia Bin Bakery → Sanmeishitang → Heart Spot → Like Tea Songshan Branch

in this order.

Our last day, in particular,

was heavily focused on shopping for Taiwanese souvenirs like pineapple cakes (鳳梨酥) and nougat crackers,

meaning the emphasis was much more on shopping than sightseeing.

We even went all the way to Xiao Ban Bakery in Banqiao,

and took a taxi to our next destination.

If you're planning to buy a lot of souvenirs during your trip,

I recommend not trying to buy everything on the last day.

Instead, start picking up items from stores near you on day 1 or 2,

bit by bit.

After exploring Yongkang Street,

having a meal at Sanmeishitang,

we made one last stop at Like Tea in Songshan.

This was another spot we included because of 'Someday or One Day',

so this Taiwan trip, from our Tainan day trip on Day 2 to our very last day,

turned into a fantastic 'Someday or One Day' tour!

After finishing all our planned activities,

we returned to our accommodation, organized our luggage in the lounge,

and wheeled our suitcases to Taipei Main Station.

Unlike on the first day, on our last day,

we made sure to double-check for the Airport MRT Express train sign before boarding.

We then took our 6:10 PM flight back to Korea.

Is a Tainan Day Trip Worth It on a 2-Night, 3-Day Taiwan Itinerary?

My answer is a resounding YES, if you have a clear purpose.

It was indeed possible to travel from Taipei to Tainan and return in the evening on the same day,

And thanks to that, we got to experience Tainan's unique atmosphere, which is completely different from Taipei's,

explore the 'Someday or One Day' filming locations, and savor Tainan's local cuisine.

However, the downsides are also clear.

You'll need to take the HSR (High-Speed Rail) first thing in the morning,

and there's a lot of moving around throughout the day,

so it's far from a relaxed trip.

Especially if you're traveling with elderly parents,

or if you're concerned about your stamina,

I probably wouldn't recommend following this exact itinerary.

On the other hand,

if you want to see as much as possible even with just 2 nights and 3 days,

and you have a clear destination in Tainan, like the 'Someday or One Day' filming spots,

then this itinerary is definitely worth a try!

Overall Review: Taiwan 2-Night, 3-Day Travel Itinerary

If I had to sum up our trip in one sentence, it would be:

An incredibly packed Taiwan independent trip that made us wonder if it really was just 2 nights and 3 days! Haha!

Day 1 explored Ximending and downtown Taipei.

Day 2 was a day trip to Tainan.

And Day 3 wrapped up with souvenir shopping and Yongkang Street.

While it wasn't a leisurely trip focused solely on Taipei,

we managed to do a lot of what we wanted to do

in a very short amount of time!

If you're visiting Taiwan for the first time

and want to leisurely explore the main tourist attractions,

you might want to skip Tainan and

I recommend an itinerary focused on Taipei❗️

If you're like me, with specific places you absolutely want to visit,

and you want to make the most of every moment of your 2-night, 3-day trip,

then even including a day trip to Tainan,

a 2-night, 3-day Taiwan travel itinerary is totally doable❗️

​

And the shorter your trip,

the more crucial it is to prepare transportation

that can be booked in advance.

Like the Airport MRT or HSR,

once your travel dates are set,

if you compare prices and conditions first,

you can significantly reduce wasted time on location.
